  • This study investigated the differences in sociodemographic variables, alcoholism recovery, quality of life, empowerment and self-esteem based on different abstinence periods of alcohol use disorder. The study population from seven different regions in nationwide were 207 individuals with alcohol use disorder who had been abstinent. According to previous studies, 207 individuals were classified into different abstinence periods: less than one year, more than one to five years, and more than five years. As a result, the sociodemographic variables affecting differences in groups were gender, age, marital status, and economic activity. In addition, the group that maintained abstinence from alcohol for more than one year showed significant differences in alcoholism recovery, quality of life, empowerment, and self-esteem than those that maintained abstinence from alcohol for less than one year. Regardless of abstinence periods, alcoholism recovery, quality of life, empowerment, and self-esteem showed significant positive correlations. Therefore, the results of this study identified the factors influencing long-term abstinence and effects and suggested the need for alcohol-dependent recovery programs or therapeutic interventions for individuals who abstained from alcohol use.

  • In recent years, paradigm of alcoholism has been taken to recover from abstinence. This study intends to investigate the main and mediating effects of abstinence efficacy on recovery of alcoholics considering the relationship with resilience. The survey was conducted upon 205 alcoholics. Collected data were analyzed by SEM (structural equation modeling) method using AMOS 7.0. The summary of the result is as follows. First, the model fit of partial mediation model which is including direct path of abstinence efficacy to recovery is better than full mediation model. Second, direct effects of abstinence efficacy and resilience on recovery are statistically significant. In conclusion, we could confirm the necessity of the program about resilience with program for enhancing abstinence efficacy to alcoholics.

  • Motivation has been identified as an important factor predicting long-term outcomes of alcohol abuse treatment. Whether a patient agreed on his/her inpatient treatment at time of hospitalization could be an indicator of their motivation for treatment. This study focused on this aspect of treatment motivation and examined whether this factor predicts post-discharge abstinence. A sample of 145 individuals who were hospitalized for alcohol abuse treatment participated in the baseline data collection, of which only 66 successfully completed the 8 month follow-up telephone interview. The findings of survival analysis suggest that voluntarily admitted individuals had significantly longer duration of post-discharge abstinence compared to their counterparts. A Cox proportional hazards regression model revealed that voluntary admission and family support were significant predictors for post-discharge relapse of drinking, after controlling for the effects of marital status, living alone, and working status. Implications for social work practice are discussed.

  • This study is a life history on self-realization of woman in the abstinence of alcohol process. The purpose of the study is to explore the circumstance of female alcoholism, to expand the prospect of discussion for treatment and recovery, and to suggest social welfare intervention measures. The study involved a female alcoholic who had been recovering for more than seven years, and the text for life history analysis was divided into 'dimension of life', 'turning point' and 'adaptation' based on the life history analysis framework proposed by Mandelbaum. As a result of the data analysis, 'dimension of life' was analyzed into three areas, such as the personal level of life, the family level of life, and the social dimension. 'Turning point' is to escape from a father who drinks alcohol and uses violence, to give up his job to avoid boss's abuse, and to proceed one's own way of healing. 'Adaptation' was derived into good at studying, relieving anger by drinking alcohol, and referring to AA and self-realization. Based on these findings, this study presented the social welfare practice and policy discussion focused on self-realization.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of alcohol abstinence self-efficacy in the relationship between the Alcoholics Anonymous affiliation and alcohol recovery. For these purposes, this study recruited 554 abstinent alcoholics participating in Alcoholics Anonymous. Based on structural equational modeling, the results can be summarized as follows: the relationship between the Alcoholics Anonymous affiliation and alcohol recovery was partially mediated by alcohol abstinence self-efficacy. In particular, age difference was found in the mediating relationship. Based on the findings, implications on practice and future research directions are discussed.

  • It is well known that the ultimate compressive strength of concrete filled tubular stub-column is higher than that of the simplified evaluating value because of the confinement effect of infilled concrete. In this paper, It is compared the experimental results of other researchers with estimated ones by using the formulae. Finally, It is shown that the predicted equation is obtained by using the numerical analysis.

  • The model of load-strain relations for CFT stub columns subjected to centrally compressive axial load is shown in this paper. The modified model of concrete and steel is obtained by using the experimental data and the formulas of that is based on the foreign researcher's result. The purpose of this paper is to suggest the basic data for evaluating the behavior of CFT stub columns to be variable to the strength of concrete and steel.

  • The design standards, such as AISC-LRFD (2005) and KBC-2005, specify the maximum width-to-thickness ratio that can be used for computing the strength of the concrete-filled tube (CFT), and do not include any formula for computing the strength when the width-to-thickness ratio is over the limit. This paper proposes a strength equation for CFTs with a large width-to-thickness ratio by acknowledging the fact that the stiffened slender steel platehas substantial postbuckling strength, and that it therefore can be more economical to use it. The equation adopts the concept of effective width, which is very useful for plate analysis. By comparing the strengths of AISC2005, KBC2005, and the proposed method with the results of the experiment, where the width-to-thickness ratio was regarded as the main parameter, the applicability of the proposed method was verified.

  • Recently, high performance(strength) steels have been utilized to structural materials in buildings and bridges with the demand for high-rise and long-span of main structures. This paper is a series of basic study for the design specification of structural members using high performance steel, material properties of high performance rolled steel building structures; material properties of HSA800 steel was compared with the requirements of Korean Standards(KS) for HSA800. Welded H-shape stub columns with variables of width-to-thickness ratios are planned in order to investigate the local buckling behaviors and check the current design limit of width-to-thickness ratio and uniaxial compressive tests are carried out. In addition, the buckling behaviors of stub columns obtained finite element analysis were compared with those of test results.
