In this study, experimental analysis was performed about lateral load capacity and behavior of laterally loaded-bored rigid piles in muti-layered soil conditions. Lateral pile load tests were performed for muti-layerd soils consisting of different relative density. Ultimated lateral load capacities were measured from lateral load-displacement curves and compared with estimated values using theoretical methods. Bending moments and unit lateral capacity distribution of surrounding piles were measured from attached strain gauges and earth pressure sensors on the pile. It was found that ultimated lateral load capacities were different from the muti-layered soil conditions, and measured values were lower than estimated values. The bending moment distributions of the pile were similar all the time. Unit lateral capacity distributions were a little different from muti-layered soil conditions, but basically similar to the distribution proposed by Prasad and Chari (1999).
In this study, the ultimate lateral load capacity of pile driven into multi-layered soil was estimated using cone penetration test results and a method was proposed to reflect multi-layered soil conditions. For multi-layered specimens prepared with different relative density at different layers, the cone penetration tests and lateral pile load tests were conducted. Based on the test results, measured and estimated values of the ultimate lateral load were compared and analyzed. The estimated results were obtained from the methods proposed by Broms (1964), Petrasovits & Award (1972) and Prasad & Chari (1999). The method was proposed for modifying the earth pressure distribution of Prasad & Chari (1999) to consider multi-layered soil conditions. From the analysis, it was seen that results obtained from the proposed method showed improvement with less data scatter similarly to those obtained from Broms (1964) and Petrasovits & Award (1972)'s methods.
Three ground models are analyzed using a 1g shaking table and laminar shear box (LSB) to investigate the impact of the ground structure on seismic wave amplification during earthquakes. Multi-layer horizontal, embankment, and basin ground models are selected for this investigation, with each model being divided into dense and loose ground layers, Accelerometers are installed during the construction of each ground model to capture any seismic wave amplification owing th the propagation of an artificial seismic wave, sine wave sweep, and 10-Hz sine wave through a given ground model. The amplification of the tested seismic waves is analyzed using the observed peak ground acceleration and spectrum acceleration. The observed acceleration amplification in the multi-layer horizontal ground model is significantly higher the seismic waves that propagated across the dense ground-loose ground boundary compared with those that only propagated through the dense ground. Furthermore, the observed acceleration amplification gradually increases in the central part of the multi-layer embankment and basin models for the seismic waves that propagated across the dense ground-loose ground boundary.
One of the important use of piles is to furnish lateral support and nowadays it is getting highlighted due to the increase of skyscrapers, transmission towers, wind turbines, and other lateral action dependent structures. After Broms (1964), many researchers have suggested methods for estimating lateral capacity of pile. But each method assumes different earth pressure distribution and lateral earth pressure coefficient causing confusion on the part of pile designers. Lateral earth pressure, essential in lateral capacity estimation, is influenced by pile's rotational behavior under lateral load. Prasad and Chari (1999) assumed the rotation point of pile and suggested an equation of ultimate lateral load capacity. In this study, we investigate the depth of rotation point in both homogeneous soil and multi layered soil, and compare with the estimation value by previous research. Test results show that measured rotation point and estimated value by Prasad and Chari's equation show good agreement and multi layered condition affects the location of rotation point to be changed.

Load tests for fourteen small-scale foundation models combined with geotextile, sand mat and rigid mat were conducted to study the effect of geotextile(G/T), sand mat(S/M), and foundation types on deformation of foundation soils. In addition, the experimental results were compared with those obtained from numerical analysis using a software program. The main conclusions were summarized as follows: 1. The restraint effect on G/T is more outstanding on the lateral displacement than on the vertical one. 2. The single use of S/M has better effect on the restraint of vertical displacement than lateral one. 3. The use of both S/M and G/T is required for the restraint of lateral and vertical displacement. 4. Multi-layered foundation with large rigidity shows similar tendency to that of foundation reinforced with S/M and G/T.
The soil nailing is one of the useful support-system in urban excavation because of the presence of other structures in the vicinity Since the soil nailing system was introduced, model experiments and theoretical studies have been performed to investigate behavior of soil nailed wall. However, there are few data in the case of multi-layered soil strata just like Seoul Metropolitan area in Korea. The feed back analyses are carried out using the measured wall displacement data for soil nailing construction sites with multi-layered strata in order to analyze the distance and the coefficients of extension zone of ground behind soil nailed wall. As a result, the distance of extension zone increased with increasing of the final excavation depth and the ratio of the distance to the final excavation depth was shown to be about 94% of the final excavation depth. Also, the coefficients of extension zone increased with enlargement of soil layer thickness and converged into constant value of 1.05. On the other hand, the maximum vertical displacements by the feed back analysis and Caspe's method were shown to be approximately 80%, 150~280% of the maximum horizontal displacement respectively.
This paper deals with the results for a numerical analysis of single piles and pile groups in multi-layers soil(granite soil-clay-granite soil) subjected to monotonous lateral loading using the ABAQUS finite element software. The investigated variables in this study include free head and embedded capped single pile, pile diameter (0.5m), pile length (10m), and pile groups. Numerical analyses were conducted by variation of spacing piles(s=3D, 4D, 5D) to compare the behaviour of single pile without cap and group pile. The $1{\times}3$ pile group(leading pile, middle pile, trail pile) was selected to investigate the individual pile and group lateral resistance, the distribution of the resistance among the piles. The analysis model of clay and the material of granite soil was modeled by using Druker-Prager constitutive relationship and existing treatise respectively. The pile was considered as a elastic circular concrete pile. As a result, the more pile space was extended, the value of P-multiplier is appeared to be less effective to leading pile. The lateral resistance of single-layer showed approximately 4-20% larger than the multi-layers.

In this research, load-transfer-function method was selected, because that is widely used in geotechnical engineering among the analysis methods to verify the behavior of load-lateral displacement. Lateral loading test of field scale was conducted, this measured data was analyzed. From the analysis, the model of load-lateral displacement was suggested. The test results were studied and compared to the commercial programs, 'LPILE', which contain the load transfer functions proposed before. By analysis of measure data of load-lateral displacement that expressed to several functions, $y=ae^{bx}$ model was the simplest and applicable to the field. In that case a value converged about 1.3, b value had a tendency to converge about 0.02. From the comparison analysis between measured data and load transfer function by 'LPILE', it is examined that if the lateral load is small, calculated displacements of them show a similar value compared to measured values. Furthermore, the bigger lateral loads, the bigger calculated values compared to the measured data. If the results are compared by Matlock-Reese method and Matlock-API method, Matlock-Reese method shows result of safe side because lateral displacement is calculated greatly relatively.

Piles are often subjected to both axial and lateral loads. The nonlinear subgrade reaction method is widely used for the design of laterally loaded piles and in this approach the soil reaction is replaced with a series of independent nonlinear Winkler springs. In this study, Laterally loaded high strength H-piles were analyzed using a finite difference solution, and three p-y curve models with different k values(the coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction, [FL$\^$-3/]) were evaluated using data obtained from various field tests, and another analysis method using Q$\sub$g/ - y$\sub$g/ curve was developed. The results of this analysis were compared with the measured values to assess their applicability.
