  • In this paper, the occurrence of a stopband phenomenon when an acoustic wave propagates through periodically corrugated ducts is discussed using theoretical and BEM analyses. A 2-D duct with sinusoidally corrugated upper and lower walls is considered. When the magnitude of the sinusoidal corrugation is sufficiently small compared to the duct's height, the wave equation is solved with the multiple scaling perturbation method. Then stopbands for Bragg and non-Bragg resonances are computed from the condition where frequency becomes a complex number. A 2-D BEM analysis is performed to compute insertion loss of the duct, and stopbands are confirmed as predicted by analytical analysis.

  • This paper describes multi-scale based ductile fracture simulation using finite element (FE) damage analysis. The maximum and crack initiation loads of cracked components were predicted using proposed virtual testing method. To apply the local approach criteria for ductile fracture, stress-modified fracture strain model was adopted as the damage criteria with modified calibration technique that only requires tensile and fracture toughness test data. Element-size-dependent critical damage model is also introduced to apply the proposed ductile fracture simulation to large-scale components. The results of the simulation were compared with those of the tests on SA333 Gr. 6 full-scale pipes at $288^{\circ}C$, performed by the Battelle Memorial Institute.

  • Nanometer-sized structures are being applied to many fields including micro/nano electronics, optoelectronics, quantum computing, biosensors, etc. Micro contact printing is one of the most promising methods for manufacturing the nanometer-sized structures. The crucial element for the micro contact printing is the nano-resolution printing technique using polymeric stamps. In this study, a multi-scale analysis scheme for simulating the micro contact printing process is proposed and some useful analysis results are presented. Using the slip-link model [1], the dependency of viscoelasticity on molecular weight of polymer stamp is predicted. Deformation behaviors of polymeric stamps are analyzed using finite element method based upon the predicted viscoelastic properties.

  • In the present work, LES with new variational multiscale method is conducted on the fully developed channel flow with Reynolds number, 180 based on the friction velocity and the channel half width. Incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are integrated using finite element method with the basis function of NURBS. To solve space-time equations, Newton's method with two stage predictor multicorrector algorithm is employed. The code is parallelized using MPI. The computational domain is a rectangular box of size $2{\pi}{\times}2{\times}4/3{\pi}$ in the streamwise, wall normal and spanwise direction. Mean velocity profiles and velocity fluctuations are compared with the data of DNS. The results agree well with those of DNS and other traditional LES.

  • Turbulent flows with wavy wall are simulated using Residual-based Variational Multiscale Method (RB-VMS) which is proposed by Bazilves et al(2007) as new Large Eddy Simulation methodology. Incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are integrated using Isogeometric analysis which adopt the basis function as NURBS. The Reynolds number is 6760 based on the bulk velocity and averaged channel height. And the amplitude (${\alpha}/{\lambda}$) of wavy wall is 0.05. The computational domain is $2{\lambda}{\times}1.05{\lambda}{\times}{\lambda}$ in the streamwise, wall normal and spanwise direction. Mean quantities and turbulent statistics near wavy wall are compared with DNS results of Cherukat et al.(1998). The predicted results show good agreement with reference data.

  • The fatigue characteristics of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites were studied under repeated loads using the finite element method (FEM). To realize the material characteristics of GFRP composites, Digimat, a mean-field homogenization tool, was employed. Additionally, the micro-structures and material models of GFRP composites were defined with it to predict the fatigue behavior of composites more realistically. Specifically, the fatigue characteristics of polybutylene terephthalate with short fiber fractions of 30wt% were investigated with respect to fiber orientation, stress ratio, and thickness. The injection analysis was conducted using Moldflow software to obtain the information on fiber orientations. It was mapped over FEM concerned with fatigue specimens. LS-DYNA, a typical finite element commercial software, was used in the coupled analysis of Digimat to calculate the stress amplitude of composites. FEMFAT software consisting of various numerical material models was used to predict the fatigue life. The results of coupled analysis of linear and nonlinear material models of Digimat were analyzed to identify the fatigue characteristics of GFRP composites using FEMFAT. Neuber's rule was applied to the linear material model to analyze the fatigue behavior in LCF regimen. Additionally, to evaluate the morphological and mechanical structure of GFRP composites, the coupled and fatigue analysis were conducted in terms of thickness.
