This study investigated the longitudinal transition of adolescents' psychological character profiles, which includes self-esteem, acculturative stress, depression, and social withdrawal, and the predictive effects of parental efficacy, families' support, and friends' support in multicultural families. The sample consisted of 1,188 adolescents in elementary school, who were re-examined in three years, when they were in middle school from the part of waves 2 and 6 of the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study. A latent profile analysis identified three distinct profiles of psychological character among adolescents in elementary school and middle school: stable, social withdrawal, and unstable. As compared to elementary school, adolescents' psychological characteristics stayed stable and played critical roles on the latent classes. Parental efficacy, and supports from family and friends played critical roles on the latent classes. Specifically, as adolescents perceived full of supports from friends, they were more likely to make transitions to the stable group. Implications for intervention in multicultural families are discussed.

Second, as for the actual conditions of child's character education, they often used a control language such as "Do not, no", when children did not behave properly. In particular, there were some cases of using threatening words such as "taking you to the police station". This study aimed to investigate the factors that influence multicultural adolescents' proficiency in their mother's native language, or their immigrant mother's native language. A hierarchical regression analysis was performed on data from the survey answered by 1,028 multicultural adolescents aged 15 years old and whose mothers were from foreign countries for the 6th Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study(MAPS) conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute (NYPI) in 2016. The main results are as follows. First, multicultural adolescents' minority language proficiency was generally low and significant differences were observed according to their gender, parents' educational level, household income, and mother's native country. More specifically, a higher proficiency in minority language was found for girls than boys, adolescents with a higher parental educational level, adolescents with a higher income, and adolescents whose mothers were from Japan or China, compared with those from the Philippines, Thailand, or Vietnam. Second, a significant positive correlation was observed between multicultural adolescents' minority language proficiency and 1) foreign culture acceptance, 2) parent's educational support, and 3) the use of the minority language at home. Third, foreign culture acceptance, parents' educational support, and the use of the minority language at home were predictors of multicultural adolescents' minority language proficiency. The study is meaningful in that it examined multicultural adolescents' minority language proficiency, elucidating their bilingual development, whereas previous studies have only focused on their proficiency in Korean, which is the majority language.

This study was conducted with the aim of examining the acculturation process of children and parents from multicultural families, which can affect the self-esteem of the children concerned. The participants from each family consisted of the fathers, mothers, and school-age children of 179 households. The results of this study reveal the following: (1) First, the multicultural children scored higher than the average in self-esteem in most areas except school life. Furthermore, the children and parents had a comparatively positive attitude toward acculturation (2) Second, the children's level of self-esteem had significant correlations only with the acculturation of mothers as opposed to fathers. (3) Third, the impacts of acculturation of the children and their parents on the children's self-esteem followed different patterns according to the sub-areas of self-esteem. Specifically, the self-esteem for overall self-value and family relations rose when the multicultural acceptance attitude of mothers was high. Multi-cultural family identity was the main cause of depression in middle school students, and school study difficulty in high school students. Second, major variables on the affecting depression in all groups were identified as social discrimination experience. This is a pilot study of multifaceted longitudinal research project to explore educational experiences of students with multicultural family backgrounds in Korea. Especially for this pilot study, I selected three foreign-born immigrant youths and tried to explore how these youths describe constraints of their learning experience in different culture. The data for this study were mainly collected through qualitative research methods. For a better understanding of the research participants' perceptions in this study, narrative inquiry and series of semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted for a period of four months which corresponds to one semester of school system in Korea. As a result, this study found that there is an urgent need to establish a systemic and developmentaly appropriate language education programs that ensure educating the language to the foreign-born immigrant youths because their academic achievement, interpersonal relationships, and future depend greatly on the fluency of Korean language. It was also found that it is necessary to take appropriate educational actions in supporting alternative schools where the foreign-born immigrant youths can fully and seriously considered as a whole person. Although this study has some limitations in examining every single aspect of the current state of education of students with multicultural backgrounds in Korea, it provides deep insight into some of their initial educational experiences and proposes several ways to improve these educational programs for them.

Recently, the number of multi-cultural families have been on the rise for years in Korea. Although social concerns are on the increase, there is still no basic data of their oral health state. In this study, we examined the caries prevalence of mother-child pairs from some korean families and multi-cultural families, and collected some saliva from them. We evaluated Streptococcus mutans level and investigated the serotype distribution of Streptococcus mutans of them to confirm the transmission in mother-child pairs. As a results, to the Korean families, the percentages of serotype c, e, f, k were 95%, 10%, 10%, and 10%. And to the multi-cultural families, the percentages of serotype c, e, f, k were 68.8%, 31.25%, 43,75%, 18.8%. But, there is no significant relationship between the number of serotype per person, caries prevalence, and Streptococcus mutans level(p>0.05). In conclusion, there are differences of serotype distribution of Streptococcus mutans between the two families. Nevertheless, matching rate of more than one serotype between mother and their child was high (92.86%). So, vertical transmission of Streptococcus mutans in mother-child pairs could be demonstrated.
This study compared 14 programs for the economically disadvantaged or minority students with potentials in 5 countries - US, UK, Germany, Australia, and Israel, attempting contents and characters of Korean Head Start to be developed, that is the program for economically disadvantaged gifted students or students from multi-cultural families, who are gifted at risk of under-representation and under-achievement. School wide enrichment programs, which served all students with gifted programs, using RTI model in the pursuit of equity and excellence, turned out to be effective as early interventions and identification implemented for economically disadvantaged or minority students with potentials. Gifted programs for low Social Economic Status (SES) or minority students played a role as a bridge for disadvantaged students to get into a regular gifted program or even higher gifted schools and to have a competency to compete with affluent gifted students. The principles of the programs were acceleration and differentiation. Most programs also ran a parents' education and a mentor program to motivate and support disadvantaged students socially and emotionally. Collaboration among governmental offices and usage of external resources were more effective to support these students and the programs.
