A Study on the Exhaust Gas Created by Staged Combustion and Gas Generator Cycle LRE by Using CEA (CEA를 이용한 다단연소사이클 및 가스발생기 사이클 LRE 배출가스 성분 분석)

  • Recently environmental issue is more and more emphasized and 'Green Growth' became on of the key words of this Government. Based on this trend, the exhaust gases out of the gas generator cycle and the staged combustion cycle LRE whose propellants are kerosene and LOx were compared. For this purse, 8 tonf class of each cycle engine was designed and the amount and the components of the gases were investigated by using CEA. As expected, the staged combustion cycle engine generates less pollutants than the other cycle. In addition, the graphite that is generated by the gas generator can be reacted with the oxygen in the atmosphere creating additional pollutants.

  • Research for developing 9 tonf-class staged combustion cycle engine which is high performance upper stage engine has been conducted. Technical demonstration model of the staged combustion cycle engine was installed in combustion test facility of Naro space center. Combustion tests of Power-pack which consists of pre-burner and turbopump without main combustion chamber and combustion tests of engine have been conducted. The vacuuming process of hydraulic lines is introduced and the characteristics of turbopump and hydraulic lines of engine combustion test are described in this paper.

  • High performance upper stage engine is necessary for space launch vehicles of geostationary orbit, and staged combustion cycle engine is suitable due to high specific impulse. Technology demonstration model for 9 tonf class staged combustion cycle engine, which is consisted of turbopump, preburner, combustion chamber and supply system, was assembled, and hot-firing test was conducted for three seconds in Upper-stage Engine Test Facility of Naro Space Center. Ignition, combustion and shut down of engine system was performed normally, and its performance parameters were evaluated.

  • 터보펌프 구동에 사용된 가스발생기 생성가스를 연소기로 공급하여 주추력 발생에 사용하는 다단연소 사이클 로켓엔진은 고추력을 요하는 우주 발사체에 널리 사용되고 있다. 다단연소 사이클 로켓엔진에 사용되는 가스발생기를 예연소기라 부르며 케로신과 액체산소를 추진제로 하는 다단연소 사이클 로켓엔진에는 산화제 과잉 예연소기가 사용된다. 예연소기는 터보펌프 구동을 목적으로 하기 때문에 예연소기 생성가스의 횡단면 온도분포는 터빈에 의해 제한되는 온도범위 내에서 균일하여야 하며 넓은 운전영역에서 안정적인 연소가 이루어져야 한다. 산화제 과잉 예연소기는 모든 추진제가 혼합헤드를 통해 분사되는 방식과 추진제를 혼합헤드와 연소실로 나누어 공급하는 방식이 있다. 기술검증을 위해 산화제 일부와 연료를 혼합헤드를 통해 연소실에 공급하여 1차 연소시키고 나머지 산화제를 연소실 냉각채널을 거쳐 연소실 중앙의 분사공을 통해 연소실로 주입하여 기화시키는 형태로 최종적으로 연소압 20MPa, 혼합비 60에서 작동하는 산화제 과잉 예연소기를 설계하여 연소시험을 수행하였다. 혼합헤드에는 별도의 점화용 분사기 없이 전체 연료 분사기를 통해 점화용 연료인 TEA/TEB 혼합물을 분사하여 점화하였다. 추진제를 2단으로 공급할 수 있도록 고안된 가압식 연소시험 설비에서 10회, 누적 60초 이상의 연소시험이 성공적으로 수행되었다. 연소시험결과 넓은 작동영역에서 안정적 연소특성과 생성가스 온도 분포의 균일성을 확인할 수 있었다. 고온 고압의 산화제 과잉 예연소기 기술 확보를 통해 케로신/액체산소 다단연소 사이클 로켓엔진 개발을 위한 기술적 기반을 마련하였다.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute has being developed a staged combustion cycle rocket (SCCR) engine with high specific impulse to send a 3-ton class satellite into geostationary orbit while conducted Korean Space Launch Vehicle (KSLV) II project. The SCCR engine is different from the KSLV-II engine, which is open cycle engine using a gas-generator. The SCCR engine with closed cycle is composed of a pre-burner, a turbo pump, and a main combustor. The technology demonstration model (TDM0) was assembled and tested in the 7ton-class engine combustion test facility of Naro Space Center, and the combustion test was successfully conducted. Afterward engine-shaped SCCR engine model (TDM1) is being designed and developed for the next combustion test.

  • For the control of pre-burner combustion pressure, the open angle of TTR(Throttle for Thrust Regulation) valve was varied from $143^{\circ}$ to $185^{\circ}$ while testing of cold flow, ignition, combustion. The major performance variables of rocket engine and hydraulic performance of TTR valve regarding the open angle was verified. However the controllability of pre-burner combustion pressure was not verified due to the limitations of test. The comprehensive research will be done after supplementing these problems.

  • In this paper, the process of electro Ni and electro Cr plating is studied for the purpose of thermal barrier to protect the inner wall combustion chamber. The chamber is under the environment of very high temperature and high pressure when propellants burn in there. As one of the thermal barrier coatings, Zr-based thermal spray coating has been applied to the chamber. However, peeling of coating layer can occur under such a hard condition because of the difference of thermal expansion coefficients between the ceramic and the metallic wall. We study the characteristics of Ni-Cr coating and establish its process. It is found that the thickness of over $100{\mu}m$ of Ni and Cr coating layers with the uniformity of ${\pm}10%$ can be obtained with the used of as-developed plating bath.

  • The present study developed a design code for preburner of staged combustion cycle engines, which calculates preburnt gas at high-pressure oxidizer-rich conditions and predicts conjugate heat transfer and hydraulics of cryogenic fluid flow through cooling passages. It has been written based on the open-source library Cantera, into which this study has incorporated new source codes to predict correctly non-ideal thermodynamics and transport anomalies of the cryogenic fluid. For a preburner of 100 tonf-class booster engine currently under preliminary design, the present code demonstrated predictive capability and usability as a design code by comparing with CFD simulation.

  • Staged combustion cycle engines exhibit higher combustion performance compared with open cycle engines with a gas generator. An advanced research of the staged combustion cycle engine is going on for the next program following the KSLV-II program. Various experiments have been carried out for the technology demonstration model, TDM0A and TDM0B. The experiments on the combustion performance are aimed to understand the engine start condition and combustion characteristics. They also aim to develop the oxidizer-rich pre-burner and the combustor of the staged combustion cycle engine. The engine-shaped model, TDM1A is fabricated based on the experimental data. The combustion experiment of the TDM1A shows that the combustion pressure of the combustor is approximately 91 bar and the turbine rotation is approximately 28,00 rpm. The result is stable and satisfies the development requirements. The present paper reports on the development process and characteristics of engine models from TDM0A to TDM1A.
