In this study 2 cadalene homologues - 3,7-dimethoxycadalene and 7-hydroxycadalene-5,8-quinone (keyakinone A)-were further identified from ethanol extracts of Zelkova serrata wood, except 7-hydroxy-3-methoxycadalene. Two biological activities-scavenging activity of hydroxy radical and cell toxicity by MTT assay-were measured with 7-hydroxy-3-methoxycadalene. The scavenging activity of hydroxyl radical of the compound was excellent and increased with its concentration. At 100 ppm hydroxyl radicals were removed completely. However, MTT assay revealed that 7-hydroxy-3-methoxycadalene showed critical toxicity to the cells. When 1 ppm of the compound was treated to the cells, cell viability was reached up to 90%, while it was reduced to 22% after treatment of 9 ppm. In 4 different Ulmaceae species, such as Ulmus davidiana, Ulmus parvifolia, Ulmus macrocarpa, Ulmus macrophylla, 7-hydroxy-3-methoxycadalene was not found at all. Instead, 7-hydroxycadalene (Mw 214), in which methoxyl group is omitted from 7-hydroxy-3-methoxycadalene, was distributed in the heartwood of 4 Ulmaceae species as major cadalene compound.
The objective of this study was to find optimal amount of fertilization of container seedling production for Zelkova serrata, Ulmus parvifolia, Betula costata and Tilia amurensis. To reach our goal, we measured root collar diameter (RCD), height, biomass and seedling quality index (SQI) of container seedlings of four deciduous hardwood species grown at three different fertilization treatments ($0.5g{\cdot}L^{-1}$, $1.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and $2.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$). Z. serrata seedlings grown at $2.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization and B. costata seedlings grown at $0.5g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization showed the highest RCD, height, biomass and SQI. The RCD and height of U. parvifolia and T. amurensis seedlings showed no significant differences by fertilization treatments. Seedlings of two species at $0.5g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization showed the lowest SQI, however, SQI at 1.0 and $2.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization treatments were not significantly different. Based on these results, it is appeared that container seedlings of Z. serrata at minimum $2.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization, U. parvifolia and T. amurensis at $1.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization and B. costata at maximum $0.5g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization were optimal nutrient conditions. Practice of optimal fertilization rate will make us get better quality seedlings and reduction of production costs in the container nursery system as well as good field performances with higher survival rate after planting.

The purpose of this study is to offer the raw data for improving the method of landscape planting in apartment complex by objective surveying and analysing the growth ratio by type and ground planted in landscape tree. The results are as follows. In the survival ratio of tree, Pinus densiflora was the highest and Abies koreana was the lowest in evergreen tree. In case of deciduous tree, the species of the highest survival ratio were Diospyros kaki, Zelkova serrata, Prunus mume, Lagerstroemia indica and Ginkgo biloba. There showed that Sorbus commixta and Chaenomeles sinensis had the lowest survial ratio. In case of tree growth by types, Pinus strobus was the highest and Pinus densiflora var. globosa was the lowest among evergreen trees. Among deciduous trees, the growth ratio of Zelkova serrata was the highest, and the trees showed the lowest growth were Lagerstroemia indica, Magnolia denudata and Cornus officinalis. Pinus strobus, Cornus kousa, Ginkgo biloba, Chionanthus retusa and Acer palmatum were good growth in natural ground, and Zelkova serrata and Prunus armeniaca var. ansu were good in artificial ground. In the future, if you study the growth characteristics and shrubs that are excluded from the study of landscape trees in various locations are expected to derive objective data.
Antimicrobial and antioxidative activities on heartwood extractives from Zelkova serrata were investigated to develop a natural fungicide or preservative. The ethanol extract from Z. serrata was fractionated in the order of petroleum ether, diethylether and ethylacetate to determine antimicrobial activity. The highest antimicrobial activity against the tested microorganisms was found in the petroleum ether soluble fraction. An active antimicrobial compound was isolated from petroleum ether soluble fraction, and identified as 7-hydroxy-3-methoxycadalene by $^1H$-, $^{13}C$-NMR and EI-MS spectrometry. This compound showed higher antifungal activity, but lower antibacterial activity than hinokitiol(${\beta}$-thujaplicin), strong antimicrobial compound isolated from Thujopsis dolabrata. Antioxidative activity was also higher than ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and similar to BHT(butylated hydroxytoluene), one of the strongest synthetic antioxidant. As a result, it was concluded that 7-hydroxy-3-methoxycadalene isolated from Z. serrata had strong antifungal and antioxidative activities.

Old-growth and giant tree is a nonrenewable resource with great value. The purpose of this study is to provide scientific and reasonable evaluations for the preservation and management of the old-growth and giant tree. Until now the research of old-growth and giant tree's value evaluation and authoritative index is so insufficient and imperfection. Combining with the particularity of the old-growth and giant tree, this study analyzed the main value factors of the old-growth and giant tree and objectively selected the evaluation indicators. According to the actual situation value appraisal model of the old-growth and giant tree was builded. The main value factors can be divided into economic value, cultural history, growing place, tree state, tree form, tree vigor, protection level, growth environment, tree species, tree canopy, and so on. The evaluate indicators can be selected and the indicators' weight can be calculate using analytic hierarchy process methods(AHP). Based on economic value and indicators' weight, tree's total value can be revealed. After calculation and analysis, Gyeongju Gyerim Zelkova serrata's value evaluation results is 491,503,300 won. The research results of this study can provide scientific basis and reference to the old-growth and giant trees' value appraisal and loss compensation, and arouse people's environmental awareness.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the vegetation structure of Daphniphyllum macropodum community in the Geumseon Valley area of Naejangsan National Park. To do so, thirty-seven plots($100m^2$) were set up and surveyed. The surveyed plots were divided into four groups according to the analysis of classification by TWINSPAN; (I)Carpinus laxiflora community (II)Carpinus laxiflora community (III)Deciduous Broad-leaved community and (IV)Zelkova serrata community. The results of vegetation structure analysis were; Daphniphyllum macropodum did not appeared in the canopy later but in understory and shrub layer. Even though Daphniphyllum macropodum will not be dominant species in the canopy later, but it was expected that Daphniphyllum macropodum will be major species in understory and shrub layer. The expected age of forest of the Geumseon Valley where Carpinus laxiflora and Zelkova serrata were dominant trees in canopy layer, was about 50 years old while that of Daphniphyllum macropodum in understory layer was 20 years old.
The forest vegetation of southern area of Mt. Naejang National Park, Korea was classified into nine communities of Zelkova serrata, Torreya nucifera, Quercus aliena, Carpinus tschonoskii, C. laxifora Q. variabilis, Q. serrata, Q. mongolica and Pinus densiflora based on the floristic composition and physiognomy Q. mongolica community distributes at elevation above 600 m in sea level, Q. variabilis community on xeric ridges and Q. serrata community on xeric slopes at elevation 250 m∼600 m, C. tschonoskii community on mesic sites and C. laxiflora community on xeric ones at elevation 200 m∼400 m,Q. aliena community on mesic slopes and Zelkova serrata community on mesic stony slopes at stream sides, Torreya nucifera community around the Paegyang temple and Pinus densiflora community on lower parts or ridges of mountain. The actual vegetation map of the area was made in scale 1: 25,000, including above mentioned nine plant communities.
To study plant community structure and successional sere of the Kojedo District, Hallyo-Haesang National Park, fifty six plots were set up and surveyed(each plot $l00\m^2$). Fifty-six plots were classified into four community, Quercus variabilis-Zelkova serrata community(I), Q. variabilis-Cinnamomum japonicum-Neolitsea sericea community(II), Pinus thunbergii-C. japonicum-N. sericea community(III), P. thunbergii-P. densiflora community(IV) by TWINSPAN technique. Most area of forests in Kojedo district are artificial or coppice forest after artificial disturbance. The age of four community were about 35~40 years and the number of species 32~44 species per $600\m^2$. Ecological succession had been proceeded from deciduous broad-leaved species(Q. variabilis-Z. serrata etc.), P. thunbergii, P. densiflora to evergreen broad leaved forest(C. japonicum, N. sericea etc.).
