  • This research is primarily intended to investigate the potential of estimating green space threshold in terms of total volume control using degradation trends of green space derived from remote sensing and GIS. An empirical study for a case study site was conducted to demonstrate how a standard remote sensing and GIS technology can be used to assist in estimating the total control volume for green space in terms of area-wide information, spatial resolution and change detection etc. Guidelines for a replicable methodology are presented to provide a strong theoretical basis for the standardization of factors involved in the estimation of the green space threshold; the meaningful definition of land mosaic, redefinition of degradation trends for green space. It was demonstrated that the degradation trends of green space could be used effectively as an indicator to restrict further development of the sites since the visual maps generated from remote sensing and GIS can present area-wide visual evidences by permanent record. It is anticipated that this research output could be used as a valuable reference to support more scientific and objective decision-making in introducing aggregate control of green space.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of constructing streetside urban forests on particulate matter (PM) content in pedestrian paths and open spaces created between the main streets and buildings in a high-rise, high-density urban area. The study site is a 70m-wide open space between Busan City Hall and Jungang-street in Busan, Korea. The results showed that the density of PM differences between the open space and the adjacent main street were small in regions without linear trees and shrub rows during both the weekdays and weekend. On the other hand, the areas with linear trees and shrub rows were found to have significantly higher concentrations of PM compared to the roadway. In particular, sections with linear trees and shrub rows had higher PM levels both on roads and in adjacent open space, indicating that the composition of linear trees and shrub rows increased the concentration of PM in the off-street open space in areas with wide space between the roadway and building. The impact was more significant in the open space than the roadway. This phenomenon can be explained by the fact that PM generated by vehicles flows through the roadside shrubs by rapid wind flow but does not disperse widely in the pedestrian paths where the wind flow was reduced. In this study, we found that the roadside tree and shrub walls slowed the flow of wind, causing vehicle-emitted PM to accumulate if a wide open space was created between the road and building, resulting in higher concentration of PM in the open space. We confirmed that the distance between the road and building was a critical factor for constructing linear trees and shrub rows to reduce PM generated by vehicle traffic.

  • As data basic to policy in nature conservation, the Degree of Green Naturality (DGN) survey was usually carried out. This also explains the impact of human interference to natural environment. Gongju gun and Yeongi gun were surveyed in the summer of 1983 to determine the DGN of these districts. Then, the surveyed DGN was compared to the existing standard. The results obtained appeared that the average DGN of these districts ranged about 5.1 to 5.9 and especially the ratio of DGN 7-graded area was high. Because of difficulties in applying the existing standard directly to middle part of Korea, further improvement on the existing standard for ranking or surveying the DGN should be reconsidered.

  • Studies for demarcation of urban areas by ecological type have been developed, but the demarcation of urban areas by ecological perception is thus far dependent on artificial land use. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find factors that account for the urban area ecosystems by surveying a variety of ecosystem factors. By land use type, the urban area of Gangdong District, Seoul was defined. Then ecological factors in each polygon were surveyed. Ecological factors are associated with energy use(building coverage ratio, floor area ratio and ground temperature), water circulation(biotope area factors and impermeable pave ratio) and biological diversity(bird appearance index and green area ratio). The correlation between each factor was analyzed. The results indicate that urban ground temperature is divided into three groups(high, middle and low) by the biotope area factor. The bird population is divided into two groups(abundant and scarce) by the green area ratio. Therefore, demarcating the urban areas by ecological type is applicable to the biotope area factor and green area ratio.

  • This study was carried out to provide examples of planting methods for the construction of street green spaces with abundant greenery by analyzing road type, surrounding land use and planting structures in street green spaces on Port Island, Kobe, Japan. Port Island_(total area: 826ha) is a marine cultural city located in Japan's first artificial island with facilities of urban function and port facilities. The study site was designated at 11 plots of $55{\sim}285m^2$ on Port Island, and topography structure styles were divided into four types with mounding style, slope style, slope and flat style, flat style according to the adjacent roads width. The area adjacent to the middle roads with high levels of noise and pollution set up the mounding style, slope style, slope and flat style of multi-layer structures using topographic properties. The area adjacent to small roads focused on a green strip with shrubs on a flat style. Surrounding land-uses include a public institution, housing complex, and a commercial building. The planting concept was a buffer and landspace function in case of the middle road_(lane 4) while the small road_(lane 2) was a landspace function. Planting species were diverse with Liquidambe formosana, Cinnamomum camphora, Sapium sebiferum, Cedrela sinensis, Laeocarpus sylvestris var. ellipticus, Ginkgo biloba, Prunus serrulata var. spontanea, Zelkova serrata, Quercus glauca, Juniperus chinensis, Magnolia kobus, Rhododendron spp., Camellia japonica, Abelia mosanensis, etc. Planting density was 0.02~0.08(0.04) individual/$m^2$ at the canopy layer, 0.02~0.08(0.04) individual/$m^2$ at the understory layer. Ratio of green coverage was 40.0~173.7(93.0)% at the canopy layer, 2.1~79.8(34.9)% at the understory layer and 17.9~64.2(32.9)% at the shrub layer. $Gr{\ddot{u}}volumenzahl$ was $1.43{\sim}6.67(4.13)m^3/m^2$ at the canopy layer, $0.02{\sim}2.01(0.85)m^3/m^2$ at the understory layer and $0.14{\sim}0.58(0.26)m^3/m^2$ at the shrub layer. The ratio of green coverage of street green space on Port Island was higher than that of Seoul, and particularly, the ratio of green coverage and $gr{\ddot{u}}volumenzahl$ at the shrub layer differed, compared to the main street green space in Korea. The result of this study may be applicable to other coastal reclaimed cities in terms of setting methods for street greenery considering the topography structure, planting structure and planting function.

  • Securing sufficient planting strip for street shrubs has a limitation. So many different shrubs which have been planted in the streets looks consider its visual aspect rather than growth characteristics. In this study, we compared with the growth condition of planted shrubs and construction condition of its planting strip. $Photinia$ $glabra$, $Euonymus$ $japonicus$, $Camelia$ $sasanqua$, $Nandina$ $domestica$, $Abelia$ $grandiflora$ were selected in the Busan City, Korea. The planting strips width were 0.5~0.9m which is not relatively different by each species. Species which have narrow growth character of root hair in the natural bed ($Nandina$ $domestica$, $Abelia$ $grandiflora$) have a good growth condition in the street planting strip, oppositely shrubs which have wide growth character of root hair ($Photinia$ $glabra$, $Euonymus$ $japonicus$, $Camelia$ $sasanqua$) have a relatively bad growth condition. Hereupon, there have a necessity which should be select the different shrub species for the planting strip of the street.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effect of green space satisfaction on the relationship between the perception of air pollution and life satisfaction. To achieve this, the current study employed data from the 2018 Social Survey, and a sample of 37,461 participants was analyzed using moderated multiple regression analysis. Results showed that while greater satisfaction with green spaces improved life satisfaction, a more negative perception of air pollution within the community reduced life satisfaction. It was also found that green space satisfaction moderated the relationship between the perception of air pollution and life satisfaction. In other words, greater satisfaction with green spaces buffered the effect of a negative perception of air pollution on life satisfaction. The results of this study suggest that a green environment should be considered an important resource for preventing reduced life satisfaction, and illustrate that there is a need for developing various strategies for the expansion and improvement of green spaces within communities.
