  • This study aimed to identify the prevalence of dry eye, sleep disorder, depression and factors related to dry eye among the elderly living in the community. Study subjects were 149 elderly, 65 years of age or older from nearby people, acquaintances and community elderly-related centers that researchers could access. Data collection period was from June 1 to August 31, 2021. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, ANOVA, χ2-test, and multiple logistic regression. The results showed that dry eyes in elderly people were statistically significant according to age (χ2=4.50, p=.034), occupation (χ2=7.14, p=.008), chronic diseases (χ2=6.59, p=.010), drugs (χ2=4.86, p=.027), eye surgery (χ2=6.02, p=.014), and sleep disorders (χ2=7.29, p=.007). Multiple logistic regression revealed that dry eyes were associated with sleep disorders (OR=2.45, 95% CI=1.17-5.13). Therefore, for the management and prevention of dry eyes in the elderly, there is a need for nursing intervention and strategy that can find the causes of sleep disorders and improve the quality of sleep.

  • This study selected 42 domestic preceded literatures that applied exercise programs to the elderly for the past 10 years from 2010 to the first half of 2020 to analyze the characteristics of preceded research, applied period of exercise programs, configuration of exercise programs, and effectiveness of exercise programs on elderly depression, and the conclusion is as follows. First, the majority of the subjects were female and male/female elderly people in the preceding literature, and it appeared that there were no male subjects alone for any of the studies showed. The majority of the ages were over 65 years old, and the number of subjects was 50 or less. In the group, preceded research with exercise/control groups was mostly predominant, and the participated institutions and regions accounted for the majority of the residential area/public institutions and sanatorium. Second, the period of the exercise program was mostly applied for more than 12 weeks, and the frequency of exercise per week was 1-2 times and 3-4 times. Most of the preceding literature was applied with a 60-minute exercise program during the one-time exercise period. Third, most of the contents of the exercise program consisted of a aerobic exercise alone and combination of aerobic·anaerobic exercise. Fourth, it was confirmed that the effects of exercise programs were effective in physical fitness factors as well as in depression and cognitive function.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between depressive symptoms and sociodemographic factors associated with geriatric depression and insomnia and to examine the effects of these factors on depression. Methods : The severities of insomnia and depression in elderly aged 60 and older lived in Gwangmyeong city were evaluated and the related sociodemographic factors were investigated. From April 20, 2016 to December 1, 2016, Gwangmyeong city Mental Health Sevices consignment by department of psychiatry of a university-affiliated general hospital conducted surveys and interviews for total 837 elderly peoples lived in Gwangmyeong city by visiting welfare center and wards located in the city. Structured interviews were conducted using Insomnia Severity Index(ISI) and Short form-Geriatric Depression Scale(S-GDS) to examine the relationship between sociodemographic factors and the severities of insomnia and depression. Results : There were significant differences in S-GDS mean scores and age(below 70 years old, 70s, 80s, above 90 years old), type of health care(health insurance, medical aid), type of residency(own, not own) and marital status(single, married, divorced or widowed). There was a significant difference in education level, especially between not educated(and/or) elementary graduates and college graduate(F=3.227, p=0.012). Also, there were significant differences in age, type of health care, type of residency, number of household on divided S-GDS score above and below 10 scores(p<0.05). Insomnia measured by ISI was not significantly associated with sociodemographic factors(p>0.05), but was significantly associated with depressive symptoms(p<0.05). These findings suggest more severe insomnia symptom indicated the higher probability of depression and elderly with depressive symptoms had more severe insomnia. Conclusions : Geriatric depression has significant relationships with age, type of health care, type of residency, marital status, education and number of households. In addition, insomnia which is main symptom of depression in elderly, has important role in predicting the severity and diagnosis of depression.

  • The current study examines the association between multiple losses and depressive symptoms and the role of social support in multiple losses. Using a prospective designed dataset(Changing Lives of Older Couples), this study found a significant difference on the depressive symptom levels between multiple losses and single loss. In addition, there was a significant buffering effect of social support in bereavement, as oppose to previous literature that social support does not buffer the initial bereavement reaction in comparisons between the bereaved with multiple losses and the bereaved with a single loss. The author discusses the importance of monitoring elderly people with multiple losses and availability of social support before and after the loss.

  • This study identifies the moderating effects of cognition on the relationship between self-care confidence and self-care behavior in the diabetic elderly. The participants were 205 elderly subjects with diabetes, who visited a citizen health center located in D city, Korea. Data were collected from 20th April to 31st August 2015, and were analyzed by t-test and multiple regression. Our results reveal no significant differences between the depressive and non-depressive groups, when considering diabetes self-management confidence, knowledge, behavior and cognitive function. Cognitive function had a moderating effect in the relationship between self-care confidence and self-care behavior only in the depressed group. Our results indicate that it is therefore necessary to apply individual nursing intervention based on cognitive function and depression level, and to develop various programs for improving the cognitive function and depression amongst the diabetic elderly.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify factors influencing suicidal ideation for the elderly living alone. Utilizing the identified factors as the base data, the study aims to develop community programs for suicide prevention. This research is a secondary analysis of the 2017 national survey, 'Survey on the Elderly,' conducting logistics regression analysis on the data collected on 10,299 elderly aged 65 or older living in 17 general residential facilities as of 2017. The analysis reveals that 10.5% of the elderly living alone have contemplated suicide. The frequency of suicidal ideation was attributed to such factors as gender, age, chronic disease, depression and experiences of abuse and discrimination. To prevent suicide among the elderly, therefore, active management from both public and private sectors are needed for early detection of chronic diseases and depression.
