  • Norway has the geological of condition of hard bedrocks, high mountains, deep valleys and fjords. In this background many tunnels and rock caverns are developed. In this process of constructing tunnels and rock caverns Norway seems to have strong competitiveness in the construction of tunnels. In spite of high salaries to the tunnel workers, Norwegian contractors are probably producing the cheapest tunnels and rock caverns in the world. Besides benefit of hard-rock geology, Norwegian cost-saying is owing to the Norwegian excavation technique in hard rocks such as unlined pressure tunnels, air cushion chambers, underwater piercing, and reasonable contract system and organization of workers developed from the accumulated experience. Brief analytical description of them are given in this paper in order to stimulate the utilization of the underground spaces.

• This paper presents an article explaining a TBM project overall in Norway. The paper which published in Norwegian TBM Tunnelling by Norwegian Soil and Rock Eng. Assoc. in 1998, contains most of the items considered in TBM tunnelling. New powerplants, tunnels and dams have been built at Meraker in Central Norway. A total of 44 km of tunnels with cross sections varying from $7\;m^2\;to\;32\;m^2$ have been excavated in hard rock formation. Tunnel of 10 km with the 3.5 m diameter was excavated by a HP TBM in a year. his project gives the special attention to the TBM drive and equipment selection, including planning, site organization and performance.

  • Because of Norwegian topography as valleys and fjords, a large number of tunnels has been built and 59 of them have been excavated by TBM for last 30 years. Prognosis technology has been developed and improved through lots of TBM experiences, and the NTNU prediction model has been completed. This paper focuses the improvement of net penetration rate and advance rate in 14 Norwegian and 4 Koran TBM tunnelling sites of which data were reported. Through this period, net penetration rate as well as advance rate were increased to double with the improvement of disc cutter size and cutter arrangement in Norway. These rates in Korea were also increased for 15 years even though the rates were lower compared to Norwegian. It is estimated that these low rates were mainly caused by using disc cutters less than 17 inch diameter. It is expected that net penetration rate and advance rate can be increased by improvement of machine and tunnelling technology, especially by using 17 or 19 inch of the disc cutter size in the Korean full face mechanical tunnelling site.

  • Recently, tunnel technology in Korea has shown various achievements such as long tunnel and large section by tunnel construction using TBM in Korea and abroad. Especially subsea tunnels are frequently designed and constructed. The Ga-deok subsea tunnel was completed in December 2010, and the Incheon North Port Tunnel was opened and operated in 2017, and the Bo-ryeong subsea tunnel between Dae-cheon Port and Won-san Island will be completed in 2021. In foreign countries, many subsea tunnels have been constructed and operated in such as Norway and Japan. The main technical problem in the construction of subsea tunnel is to secure stability due to high water pressure conditions and large-scale seawater inflow in fault zones and weak zones. In this paper, various risk factors and solutions are described in the subsea tunnel planning of national road 77 construction work between Abhae and Hwawon.

  • This study is planned with the aim of developing a systematic construction process based on the scientific and engineering theory of the water-sealing grouting construction applied to the tunnel excavation process during the construction of the downtown underground traffic network, so that the construction quality of the relatively backward domestic tunnel water-sealing grouting construction is improved and continuously maintained no matter who constructs it. The main contents of the improved tunnel water-sealing grouting can be largely examined in the classification of tunnel water-sealing grouting application and the definition of grouting materials, the correlation analysis of groundwater pressure conditions with groundwater inflow, the study of the characteristic factors of bedrock, and the element technologies and injection management techniques required for grouting construction. Looking at the trends in global research, research in the field of theoretical-based science and engineering grouting is actively progressing in Nordic countries (Sweden, Finland, Norway, etc.), Japan, Germany, and the United States. Therefore, in this study, the algorithm is established through theoretical analysis of the elements of tunnel water-sealing grouting construction techniques to provide an integrated solution including a construction process that can effectively construct tunnel water-sealing grouting construction.

  • $CO_2$ sequestration for alleviating global warming is a hot issue in the world. In this study, TOUGH2 and FLAC3D were combined for analyzing the hyro-mechanical coupling behaviors expected in $CO_2$ sequestration and applied it to Sleipner project carried out in Norway. In the analysis, the influence of pore pressure on in situ stress was considered and the influence of caprock permeability on hydro-mechanical behaviors was analyzed. In the condition of constant injection rate, pressure and saturation at the injection well, liquid and gas saturation in rock, major and minor stress variations with time and distance from the injection well, and horizontal and vertical displacements after injection could be investigated. The major principal stress was quickly increased in the early stage and then slowly decreased to a stable value, which was higher than the initial value. In contrast, the minor principal stress returned to initial value after some increase in the early stage. Surface upheaval was steadily increased and it was up to 15mm in 2 years after injection. When the caprock's permeability was changed from $3e-15m^2{\sim}3e-18m^2$, it was found that the injection well pressure and surface upheaval were inversely propotional to the permeability.
