In this study, the crack healing effects of $Al_2O_3$ ceramics based on the heat treatment conditions were investigated. The influence of the additive amounts of SiC nanoparticles and the cycling process of indentation-heat treatment on the crack healing effect of $Al_2O_3$ ceramics were also examined. Three-point bending tests were carried out and the morphological changes in the fracture surface were observed by using FE-SEM. As a result, heat-treated samples in a vacuum or air atmosphere showed improved bending strengths compared to un-heat treated samples. This means that cracked specimens can be healed by heat treatment in a vacuum or air atmosphere. The crack healing effect of $Al_2O_3$ ceramics that were heat treated in an air atmosphere was much higher than that of those heat treated in a vacuum. After heat treatment, the $Al_2O_3$ ceramics with 30 wt% SiC nanoparticles showed a higher bending strength than those with 15 wt% SiC. The cyclic indentation and heat treatment did not remarkably affect the crack healing effect. The SEM images showed that the median crack, indenter mark on the surface, and pores in the fracture surface of a specimen almost disappeared after being heat treated in an air atmosphere.

ZnO is one of the widely utilized n-type semiconducting oxide materials in the field of optoelectronic devices. For its application to the fabrication of promising ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors, ZnO with various structures has been extensively studied. However, study on the photodetectors using zero-dimensional (0-D) ZnO nanoparticle is scarce while the 0-D nanoparticle structure has many advantages compared to the other dimensional structures for absorption of light. In this study, the photocurrent characteristics of ZnO nanoparticles were investigated through a simply pasting of the nanoparticles across the pre-patterned electrodes. Then the photoluminescence (PL) characteristic, photocurrent response spectrum, photo- and dark-current and photoresponse spectrum were investigated with a He-Cd laser and an Xe lamp. An dominant PL peak of the ZnO nanoparticles was located at the wavelength of 380 nm under the illumination of 325-nm wavelength light. The ratio of photocurrent to dark current (on/off ratio) is as high as 106 which is considerable value for promising photodetectors. On the other hand, the time constants in photoresponse were relatively slow. The reasons of the high on/off ratio and relatively slow photoresponse characteristic will be discussed.
Gas hydrate studies are attracting attention of many researchers as an innovative, economic and environmentally friendly technology when it is applied to $CO_2$ capture, transport, and storage. In this study, we investigated whether $CO_2$ hydrate shows the self-preservation effect or not, that is the key property for developing a novel $CO_2$ transport/storage method. Especially the degree of self-preservation effect for $CO_2$ hydrate was studied according to the particle size of $CO_2$ hydrate samples. We prepared three kinds of $CO_2$ hydrate samples varying their particle diameter as millimeter, micron and nano size and measured their change of weight at $-15{\sim}-30^{\circ}C$ under atmospheric pressure during 3 weeks. According to our experimental result, the lower temperature, larger particle size, and compact structure for higher density are the better conditions for obtaining self-preservation effect.
Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) are widely used in a variety of products and cosmetic products including paper, paints, plastics and sunscreen. However, information on the safety of ZnONPs are not enough and many publications suggest possible toxic effects on environmental and human health. Furthermore, physico-chemical characteristics of nanoparticles makes it hard to test toxicity using the test guidelines of chemicals adopted by regulatory bodies. In this study, stability of ZnONPs was investigated using different types of isotonic solution, which is important in the toxicity study of intravenous route. Precipitation, aggregation, size, zeta potential and morphology of ZnONPs were evaluated with different times and concentrations. Precipitation of ZnONPs were observed in ionic isotonic solution including phosphate-buffered saline, Kreb's-Ringer solution, physiological salt solution and cell culture media of DMEM (Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium) with 10% fetal bovine serum. On the other hand, they were stable without precipitation in non-ionic isotonic solution such as 5% glucose and 2% glycerol, respectively, which are biocompatible for intravenous injection. The average size of ZnONPs in 5% glucose and 2% glycerol was stably maintained, which is less than 30 nm and very similar as that in water dispersion of ZnONPs, provided by the manufacturer. The stability was maintained during the experimental period of 5 days and diluted state up to 15,000 ppm. These data suggest that 5% glucose and 2% glycerol solution can be used for the vehicles of ZnONPs in the toxicity study of intravenous injection route.
For effectively photochemical hydrogen production, Ti ions (0.01, 0.10, 0.50 mol%) impregnated $WO_3$ ($Ti/WO_3$) nanometer sized particles were prepared using a impregnation method as a photocatalyst. The characteristics of the synthesized $Ti/WO_3$ photocatalysts were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence spectra (PL), atomic force microscope (AFM), and electrostatic force microscope (EFM). The evolution of $H_2$ from methanol/water (1/1) photo-splitting over $Ti/WO_3$ photocatalysts was enhanced compared to those over pure $TiO_2$ and $WO_3$ photocatalysts; 3.02 mL of $H_2$ gas was evolved after 8 h when 0.5 g of a 0.10 mol% $Ti/WO_3$ catalyst was used.
In this study, we analyzed the effect of silicon oxynitride matrix on the optical properties of Au nanoparticles dispersed on composite film and explored the effectiveness of the silicon in fine tuning the refractive index of the composite film for applications in optical waveguide devices. The atomic fraction of nitrogen in $SiO_xN_y$ films was controlled by varying the relative flow ratio of nitrogen gas in reactive sputtering and was evaluated optically using an effective medium theory with Bruggeman geometry consisting of a random mixture between $SiO_2$ and $Si_3N_4$. The Au nanoparticles were embedded in the $SiO_xN_y$ matrix by employing the alternating deposition technique and clearly showed an absorption peak due to the excitation of surface plasmon. With increasing nitrogen atomic fraction in the matrix, the surface plasmon resonance wavelength shifted to a longer wavelength (a red-shift) with an enhanced resonance absorption. These characteristics were interpreted using the Maxwell-Garnett effective medium theory. The formation of a guided mode in a slab waveguide consisting of 3 $\mu$m thick Au:$SiO_xN_y$ nanocomposite film was confirmed at the telecommunication wavelength of 1550 nm by prism coupler method and compared with the case of using $SiO_2$ matrix. The use of $SiO_xN_y$ matrix provides an effective way of controlling the mode confinement while maintaining or even enhancing the surface plasmon resonance properties.

Electrical characteristics of field-effect thin film transistors (TFTs) with p-channels of CdTe/CdHgTe core-shell nanocrystals are investigated in this paper. For the fabrication of bottom- and top-gate TFTs, CdTe/CrHgTe nanocrystals synthesized by colloidal method are first dispersed on oxidized p+ Si substrates by spin-coating, the dispersed nanoparticles are sintered at $150^{\circ}C$ to form the channels for the TFTs, and $Al_{2}O_{3}$ layers are deposited on the channels. A representative bottom-gate field-effect TFT with a bottom-gate $SiO_2$ layer exhibits a mobility of $0.21cm^2$/ Vs and an Ion/Ioff ratio of $1.5{\times}10^2$ and a representative top-gate field-effect TFT with a top-gate $Al_{2}O_{3}$ layer provides a field-effect mobility of $0.026cm^2$/ Vs and an Ion/Ioff ratio of $2.5{\times}10^2$. $Al_{2}O_{3}$ was deposited for passivation of CdTe/CdHgTe core-shell nanocrystal layer, resulting in enhanced hole mobility, Ior/Ioff ratio by 0.25, $3{\times}10^3$, respectively. The CdTe/CdHgTe nanocrystal-based TFTs with bottom- and top gate geometries are compared in this paper.

HgTe and HgTe/CdTe core-shell structured nanocrystals(NCs) were synthesized in aqueous solution by colloidal method. HgTe and HgTe/CdTe NCs structure showed very similar XRD patterns because of the same lattice constant and crystal structure of both samples. The absorption and photoluminescence(PL) spectrum of the synthesized HgTe NCs revealed the strong exitonic peak in the IR region. The PL spectrum of HgTe/CdTe NCs have the intense peak in about 700nm shorter than that of HgTe by 400nm. The photocurrent measurement of colloidal NCs are performed using He-Ne laser for light source. The photocurrent of HgTe NCs shows the instant increased current response to light, but HgTe/CdTe NCs revealed a decreased current when lighted to the sample. In the vacuum condition, it shows reverse result that current increased under the illumination of light and it is thought that the molecules like the hydro-oxygen gas in the air give an important effect on the current mechanism.

Urchin-structured zinc oxide(ZnO) nanorod(NR) gas sensors were successfully demonstrated on a polyimide(PI) substrate, using single wall carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs) as the electrode. The ZnO NRs were grown with ZnO shells arranged at regular intervals to form a network structure with maximized surface area. The high surface area and numerous junctions of the NR network structure was the key to excellent gas sensing performance. Moreover, the SWCNTs formed a junction barrier with the ZnO which further improved sensor characteristics. The fabricated urchin-structured ZnO NR gas sensors exhibited superior performance upon $NO_2$ exposure with a stable response of 110, fast rise and decay times of 38 and 24 sec, respectively. Comparative analyses revealed that the high performance of the sensors was due to a combination of high surface area, numerous active junction points, and the use of the SWCNTs electrode. Furthermore, the urchin-structured ZnO NR gas sensors showed sustainable mechanical stability. Although degradation of the devices progressed during repeated flexibility tests, the sensors were still operational even after 10000 cycles of a bending test with a radius of curvature of 5 mm.
Hollow silica spheres were prepared by spray drying of precursor solution of colloidal silica. The precursor solution is composed of 10-20 nm colloidal silica dispersed in a water or ethanol-water mixture solvent with additives of tris hydroxymethyl aminomethane. The effect of pH and concentrations of the precursor and additives on the formation of hollow sphere particles was studied. The spray drying process parameters of the precursor feeding rate, inlet temperature, and gas flow rate are controlled to produce the hollow spherical silica. The mixed solvent of ethanol and water was preferred because it improved the hollowness of the spheres better than plain water did. It was possible to obtain hollow silica from high concentration of 14.3 wt% silica precursor with pH 3. The thermal conductivity and total solar reflectivity of the hollow silica sample was measured and compared with those values of other commercial insulating fillers of glass beads and $TiO_2$ for applications of insulating paint, in which the glass beads are representative of the low thermal conductive fillers and the $TiO_2$ is representative of infrared reflective fillers. The thermal conductivity of hollow silica was comparable to that of the glass beads and the total solar reflectivity was higher than that of $TiO_2$.
