  • Hyssopus officinalis is a herbaceous plant of the genus Hyssopus. Due to its properties as an antiseptic, cough reliever and expectorant, it is commonly used as an aromatic herb and medicinal plant. This study was performed to investigate the anti-oxidative and anti-melanogenic properties of Hyssopus officinalis extracts (HE) using in vitro assays and cell culture systems. As a result, HE showed higher DPPH and ABTS radicals scavenging activity in a dose-dependent manner. Also, HE inhibited the prodution of intracellular ROS and melanin contents in B16F10 melanoma cell as well as tyrosinase activity. We also found that HE inhibit mRNA expression of MITF, tyrosinase and TRP-2 gene. These findings suggest that HE may be beneficial for preventing oxidative damage and melanogenesis of skin.

  • The nationwide weed survey was conducted in arable land, paddy field, upland, orchard and pasture, over whole country of Korea during 3 years from 2013 to 2015. Also, these survey were conducted in order to determine a change of weed community and to identify a major dominant weed species, and problem weeds. Weeds of arable land were composed of 619 species belonging to 81 families. Weeds occurred in paddy field were 90 species belonging to 28 families, upland weeds were 375 species of 50 families, orchard weeds were 492 species of 63 families and pasture weeds 275 species of 52 families. Among total 81 families, the Asteraceae (15.5%) was the biggest family, followed by Poaceae (13.1%), Fabaceae (5.5%), Cyperaceae (5.2%), Polygonaceae (6.3%), respectively. And these weed species were composed of annual weeds of 209 species (33.8%), winter annual of 102 species (16.4%) and perennial weeds of 308 species (49.8%). Exotic weeds naturalized in Korea were investigated as 166 species. Weed flora in Korean cultivation area have been increased as much as 13 families and 186 species for 10 years compared to 2000~2004 weed survey result of 68 families and 433 species. The increment could be resulted from the change of weed population such as increase of the herbicide-resistant and the difference of investigation method.

  • In this study, we investigated the whitening and anti-oxidant activity of 37 Jeju island native plants. The active ingredients of the plants were prepared by methanol extraction. Whitening activity of plant extracts was examined from the inhibitory effect of tyrosinase and the inhibition of melanin synthesis of the B16-F1 cell line. Their anti-oxidant activity was measured by electron donating ability of DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ROS (reactive oxygen species) scavenging activity in V79-4 lung fibroblast cells using DCF-DA (dichlorofluorescin diacetate). Cytotoxicity of the extracts on cell s based experiments was investigated by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide) assay. Also, the toxicity test using a rabbit and the human skin patch test were carried out for examining the safety of the extracts which showed the high whitening activity. It is interesting that the extracts of Lespedeza cuneata, Ligustrum lucidum (stem), Morus bombycis (stem) and Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina showed both potent whitening and anti-oxidant activities.

  • This study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with hot water extracts (HE) of selfheal (Prunella vulgaris) and Lactobacillus rhamnosus culture fluid (LF) on the growth and non-specific immune responses of juvenile olive flounder. A total of 270 fish ($5.07{\pm}0.01g$, average $weight{\pm}SD$) were divided randomly into nine groups, and three groups were fed one of three isonitrogenous (51% crude protein) and isocaloric (17.6 MJ/kg) diets. The diets contained no supplement, 50 mL hot water extract, or 50 mL L. rhamnosus fluid (designated as diets CON, HE and LF, respectively). During the 8-week feeding trial, the growth, feed utilization and survival of the fish were not significantly affected by the experimental diets. There were no significant differences in the hematocrit and hemoglobin of fish fed each of the experimental diets. However, the serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activity were lower with the dietary supplements containing HE and LF. The alanine aminotransferase activity of fish fed the HE diet was significantly lower than that of fish fed the control diet. The hematocrit, hemoglobin, and nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) activity were higher 3 hr after feeding than 24 hr afterwards. The NBT activity of fish fed the HE and LF diets were significantly higher than that of fish fed the control diet 3 hr after feeding. The findings suggest that dietary supplementation with HE and LF could enhance the nonspecific immune responses of juvenile olive flounder.
