  • We present a case of autoimmune chronic pancreatitis in a previously healthy child without any history of autoimmune disease. A 12-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain. The serum amylase, lipase, and IgG levels were elevated and autoantibodies (antinuclear antibody, antineutrophil antibody) were detected. An abdominal CT (computed tomographic) scan revealed diffuse enlargement of the pancreas. ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography) demonstrated an irregular stricture of the main pancreatic duct in the pancreas tail. After two years of oral steroid and immunosuppressive drug therapy, the clinical, laboratory and radiological findings were improved. The patient has been symptom-free for 18 months after the discontinuation of medication.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of combined Western and Oriental medicine headache massage program for chronic headache patients. Methods: This study was designed using the Nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The forty nine patients were divided into an experimental group (25 patients) and a control group (24 patients). Collected data were analyzed by Chi-test, t-test, Fisher's exact test, Repeated measures ANOVA using SPSS/WIN 14.0 program. Results: After treatment in this program, the experimental group had no significan difference in scores for headache intensity and frequency as the length of time in treatment increased compared to the control group. But there were significant decreases in the use of medication (F=4.209, p=.046) and disturbances in the quality of life related to headaches (F=13.097, p=.001) after providing the combined Western-Oriental massage program. Conclusion: This program could have a positive effect on using medication for pain controllers and headache related quality of life. Based on the results of this study, further research focusing on the effectiveness of unique nursing intervention for chronic headache patients is suggested.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors contributing to health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive design was used. The sample included 114 patients in a gastroenterology outpatient department at one hospital located in G city. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire from June to December 2009. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 15.0. Results: Health-related quality of life was most strongly related to age, sex, income, occupation, and the care provider. Old age, female gender, lower income, not having an occupation and having a non-medical person were associated with lower HRQOL ($R^2$=.03~.22, p=.041~<.001). Conclusion: CHB infection had a negative impact on HRQOL among the older, female gender, low socioeconomic status and not having medically knowledgeable care givers. Interventions beyond nursing care may be needed to improve the quality of health for patients with Chronic Hepatitis B.

The results of the study can be used as basic materials for developing comprehensive intervention methods of care givers of CRF patients. Method: The research used van Manen's hermeneutic and phenomenological research methods in order to describe the lived experience and to understand its meaning. It concentrates on the understanding the essence of experience and consists of existential survey, hermeneutic and phenomenological reflection and hermeneutic writings. Participants in this research were five women care givers of CRF patients who had hemolysis at C university hospital in a metropolitan city, the period of data collection was from July 27 to Sep. 4, 2004 and major data of results in the following 5 essential themes. "sole responsibility for the patient enduring everything", "creating their own field", "heavy and painful life without hope of their private life", "wishing not to be inherited and consoling each other". Conclusion: The above findings point out that the experience of care givers of CRF patient affected and changed all parts of an individual life and his or her family life. Therefore, it suggests that total family nursing care must be considered in order to provide the holistic caring for CRF patients and their care givers.

  • Massive pancreatic pleural effusion is a rare complication of chronic pancreatitis. It results from leakage of pancreatic secretion into the pleural space through the aortic or esophageal hiatus, either by a pancreatic duct disruption or communicating pseudocyst. The presentation of the pancreatic pleural effusion is often misleading as respiratory rather than abdominal symptoms because of predominance of pulmonary complaints. Markedly elevated amylase level of the pleural fluid is highly suggestive of the diagnosis. We experienced a case of chronic pancreatitis with massive pleural effusion in a 9-year-old female, who presented with a 6-months history of intermittent abdominal pain, and cough and chest pain for 3 days.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a self-management program for community dwelling patients with chronic mental illness so that they could improve their daily living skills and interpersonal relationships. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pre-post test design was used. The participants with chronic mental illness were recruited from a community mental health center. Twenty-two participants were assigned to the intervention group and 19 to the control group. The self-management was provided by 8 trained nursing students, and consisted of 8 sessions including education and practice. Each session was composed of strategies to improve self-care of community dwelling patients with chronic mental illness. Baseline and post-intervention measurements were done using a daily living skill performance scale and interpersonal relationship instrument. Results: Scores for daily living skill performance were not statistically significant, but scores for interpersonal relationship were statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study show that the self-management program had a positive impact on patients with chronic mental disorders. Therefore, it is suggested that the program could be used as an effective nursing intervention for patients with chronic mental disorders being cared for in community mental health centers.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the degree of pain belief in musculoskeletal patients, and to identify the correlation with chronic pain, pain coping and pain disability. Methods: A total of 203 inpatients or outpatients with chronic pain in orthopedics agreed voluntarily to participate in this study and answer a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 17.0 program with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and simple linear regression. Results: The degree of pain belief in this study showed statistically significant differences depending on their age, education, job, health status, and pain duration. Among the variables correlating with pain belief in this study, there were positive correlations between pain and pain disability, pain and passive coping, pain belief and passive coping, pain belief and pain, pain belief and pain disability. The strongest correlation was passive coping and pain disability. Conclusion: From the results of this study, we concluded that it is necessary to develop the nursing intervention which can help reducing negative pain belief in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Also we need to enhance the ways of coping to active or chronic pains for controlling them effectively.

Methods: Studies published from 2014 to 2023 were searched for on the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), PubMed, and KMbase using the keywords "chronic pancreatitis", "herbal medicine", "herb", "만성 췌장염", and "한약". The studies were analyzed according to year, study design, characteristics of the patients, and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) intervention. Results: In total, 23 studies were selected. There were 21 randomized controlled trials and 2 case-control studies. The most common herbal prescriptions were Qingyi-tang (淸胰湯), Radix Bupleuri (柴胡), Radix Paeoniae Alba (白芍藥), Radix Glycyrrhizae (甘草), Radix Scutellariae (黃芩), and Rhei Rhizoma (大黃). In all the studies, herbal medicine treatments were effective in the treatment of chronic pancreatitis, and efficacy was assessed using clinical symptoms, physicochemical examination, radiological examination, and relapse. Conclusions: Herbal medicine treatment can be an effective treatment for chronic pancreatitis and has potential in clinical practice.
