  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of topping time and fertilizer split application on the growth and root yield of Scutellaria baicalensis G. In case of stem cutting at 25cm above the soil surface early in July and middle in August, plant height was reduced by 37cm compared with nontreatment, but stem diameter, the number of branch per plant and the growth of root increased. Topping treatment twice produced the highest dry root yield (182kg/10a) of all, 15% higher than nontreatment. When nitrogen and potassium were applied by the basal dressing with 60% and by the top dressing early in July and middle in August with 20% in each time, the growth of plant (both top and root) increased. The dry root yield per 10a in top dressing twice was 12% higher than once.

  • Perilla contains more than 60% of fatty acids. Linolenic acid is effective in preventing heart disease, improving learning ability, treating allergies, and preventing cancer. This study was carried out to improve the cultivation method to aid the stable production of perilla by developing a suitable inter-cropping system with sesame in the central region as well as to report a suitable planting time. The test results are summarized as follows. As the planting time of perilla in the inter-cropping system with sesame was delayed, the number of clusters and capsules decreased. The perilla yields in this system showed significant differences compared to that with the previous crops (sesame varieties) and planting period. The yield of perilla was significantly lower in the characteristic-Type B variety than in the characteristic-Type A variety and decreased significantly as the planting time was delayed. With regards to the quality characteristics of perilla, such as crude protein, crude fat, etc., there were no differences between previous perilla crops and those inter-cropped with sesame. The perilla composition did not show any difference during the planting period; however, with delay in the planting time, crude protein content increased but crude fat content decreased. Yield of perilla was 38% higher in a two-row (40 x 40 cm) system, compared to a single-row cultivation (110 x 20 cm) of perilla inter-cropped with sesame. These results suggest that the suitable method for inter-cropping perilla with sesame in the central region is to sow the characteristic-Type A variety in early May, and cultivate the perilla in two lines (40 x 40 cm) in mid-June. This was judged to be the best cultivation method in the central region.

  • Two cowpea varieties, VITA #5 &Jungweon local var., had been sown at intervals of 15 days from May 1 to Aug. 29, and the following results were obtained. The earlier the two varieties had been sown, the shorter period from planting to first blooming and maturing, the more peduncles, the more pods per peduncle and plant, the heavier 100-grain weight, and the more grain yield we had. VITA #5 was earlier in maturity and higher in yielding performance than Jungweon local var., and both could not bloom in late sowing after Aug. 14. During the period of flowering and seed-setting, bad weather condition decreased the number of grains per pod. Limit sowing date of VITA #5 was Jun. 30 and that of Jungweon local var. was Jun. 15 in the middle part of Korea. Growing degree days (GDD) was available in cowpea.

  • To investigate the hormetic effect of the low dose ${\gamma}-ray$, soybean(Glycine max L.) seeds of three cultivars (Hwangkeumkong, Bansakong, S900 cv.) were irradiated with the dose of 0.5∼20.0 Gy and cultivated in the experimental field. The hormetic effects of the low dose ${\gamma}-ray$ on the growth of field experiment were different from each cultivar, that is, more effective in the S900 cultivar of black seedcoat color than in the Hwangkeumkong and Bangsakong of yellow ones. The germination rate of S900 cultivar increased about 30% in the 0.5Gy irradiated group compared with that of the control. The plant height of the 4.0Gy irradiated group in both Bangsakong and S900 cultivar increased 15% more than that of the control. Grain yield and the number of pod in 1.0 Gy and 4.0 Gy irradiated group of S900 cultivar and that of 2.0 Gy irradiated group of Hwangkeumkong increased 25 and 35% on the average, respectively.

  • Henoch-$Sch{\ddot{o}}nlein$ purpura (HSP) is a vasculitis of the small vessels in skin, joints, gastrointestinal (GI) tract and kidney. GI symptoms occur in up to 85% of patients and may lead to severe problems such as intussusception, obstruction, and perforation. GI symptoms may not be easily controlled, showing refractoriness to the conventional corticosteroid therapy. Although GI involvements of HSP are acute, and self-limited in most instances, they may cause fatal results in some unusual cases. In such conditions all the possible therapeutic modalities should be considered. We report two cases of severe small bowel involvement of HSP. One case presented with severe abdominal pain showing refractoriness to corticosteroid, but improved with IV immunoglobulin therapy. In the second case, HSP with transmural infarction in the small bowel could be cured with surgical intervention.
