  • The purpose of this study is to analyze trilogy by means of semiotics. trilogy constructs a story as a whole while each piece delivers a concluded ending. This study used 'modele actantiel' and 'carre semiotique' of Greimas in order to clarify not only the meaning structure but also the course of narrative of . is a compelling story which reverses the fairy tale of a beautiful princess and a heroic prince. Each piece of the trilogy unfolds as following; (1)ls the love of a princess and an ogre possible? (2)Can the marriage of the couple get confirmed? (3)Can Shrek be free again? The repeated meaning structure of trilogy is the binary opposition of nature versus culture, and the narrative course forms the meaning square on the basis of the opposition. Human culture represented by the lord Farquaad and Duloc castle signifies cleanness, order, complex, anxiety, paranoia, authoritarian, and violent. On the contrary, Nature represented by Shrek and the swamp signifies barbarity, freedom, confident, maturity, unstrained, and humar. The meaning of Shrek series is generated by the structure of the basic discrimination of culture versus nature. However, as story twists the bias and fixed idea, the meaning structure of Shrek shows a unique relationship of culture and nature. Although Shrek, an ogre, lives alone in a swamp because of the bias of human world, he is depicted as self-sufficient, comfort, and broad-minded. On the basis of this meaning structure, Shrek is not a story that an ogre(nature) strives to enter the human culture, nor a story that nature wins a victory at the confrontation between culture and nature, but a story that human(culture) and ogre(nature) overcome their fixed ideas through the transition from culture to nature and vice versa.

  • This paper proposes the off-line handwritten flowchart symbol recognition algorithm by type and strength of a cross region of the straight line strokes that is extracted based the normalized dominant slope vectors. In the proposed algorithm, first of all, a connector symbol which consisted only curves is recognized by the special features, and the other symbols with straight line strokes are recognized by type and strength of a cross region, and that is extracted by extension of minimum bounding rectangle of the clusters of the normalized dominant slope vectors, and the straight line strokes of the symbols is extracted by the normalized dominant slope vectors. To confirm the validity of the proposed algorithm, the experiments are conducted for 10 different kinds of flowchart symbols that mainly used for computer program, and the number of symbols is 198. Experiment results were obtained the recognition rate of 99.5%, and the flowchart symbols is recognized correctly robust to variations, and then the proposed algorithm were found very effective for off-line handwritten flowchart symbol recognition.

  • This paper attempts to analyze Starcraft by Greimas's Carre Semiotique and the theory of structure generation semiotics, which are useful for non verbal text as well as verbal text. First, by using the Christian Metz's grand syntagma theory and principle, this study articulated the text of starcraft. As a result, it revealed that Starcraft has the axis of sense of war and has the primary sense categories of production and destruction. The sense of the Starcraft is being generated by these axis of sense and sense categories. This analysis is expected to be a stepstone for the furthermore analysis of narrative and discoursive level.

  • This study analyzed symbolically the TV advertisement of disabled model from the point of view of the advertising communication of the consumers. Depending on the characteristics of the semiotics square of Greimas, the flow of the value of consumption of people with TV advertisement of disabled model, protective value, non-protective value, existence value, non-existence value such as ${\infty}$ re-protective value in the presence value it will move the form. The results from this study showed that SK Telecom TV ad (wheelchair basketball) is existence value, the iPhone 4 (lovers) is non-protective value, Samsung Securities (campaign) is protective value and Sonata automotive TV ad (Sonata Touchable Music Sheet) shows the non-existence value.

  • This study analyzed symbolically the win-win cooperation(or win-win growth) policies and laws of large and small business to Roland Barthes and Greimas's semiotics model, and suggested that the company win-win ecosystem(cooperation) and sanggeuk(competition) shoule from a mutual harmony and balance rather than being separated from eace other like yin(-) and yang(+) theory. The results of these studies, unlike the coexistence cooperation Promotion Law of large and small business is the original intent in the ecosystem of companies, there will also be acting as a regulatory rather to officials of large and small business. In this study, because it is limited to the analysis of large and small business win-win cooperation policies and laws, it must be supported in the future of the specific empirical research.

  • Animation is the aggregate of signs based on narrative. Algirdas Julien Greimas made structuralist frame and analyzed the meaning with it. Greimas's semiotics among the animated characters appearing in the conflict structure is suitable for the analysis and figure out the structure and meaning of the conflict which is hidden. Because Greimas Semiotic Square is suitable for apprehending meaning structure, it help for us to identify between characters and meaning that from character. Actantial Model help to apprehend power relations in structure between characters by axis of desire. This study search Greimas's semiotics and based on this analyse animation, . Also this study analyse conflicts between protagonist and antagonist with Greimas Semiotic Square after analysing narrative of like Vladimir Proof's folktale analysis. Unlike the protagonist's internal conflict, the antagonist's internal conflict moves the audience's emotions. • Greimas's Carre Semiotique, as Floch showed in his analysis of car, has much effectiveness not only in theoritical aspect but also in practical aspect. This paper used his theory to analysis the value system of MMORPG. Lineage, the game known as representative game of 'nogada', was the starting point. WOW is supposed to have opposition relation with lineage and Ragnarok contradiction relation, and Mabinogi non contradiction relation. As well as games, the concepts that match to 'nogada' of lineage are also supposed. The value system of games is expected to be useful in further systematic analysis of games and also in practical area of design and marketing.

  • Clothing is a powerful medium that reflects the environment, situation, and trends of the times. It has been an important subject of semiotic analysis, particularly in East Asia. While Korea, China, Japan, and Mongolia are geographically close, they have each developed unique characteristics in their clothing. These characteristics continue to evolve over time. The purpose of this paper is to explore the modern fashion design characteristics of these four East Asian countries by using the Greimas symbol square. To achieve this, the paper follows a research method consisting of several steps. First, it considers previous studies on the topic. Second, it analyzes fashion collections from Paris, Milan, New York, and London, as well as the Seoul and Cruise collections, from 2013 to 2024. Third, it compares costumes and modern fashion designs of brands known for their East Asian influences. Finally, it applies the framework of the Greimas symbol square to analyze the main elements of dress culture in these four countries and their significance in modern fashion collections. The findings of this study reveal that East Asian costume culture can be summarized into four distinct characteristics in modern fashion. Korea is characterized by "moderation," China by "exaggeration," Japan by "distinctiveness," and Mongolia by "symbolism."

  • The purpose of this study is to review and criticize the articles that analyzed Frozen by using the semiotic method of Greimas. The study also aims to apply the semiotic method of Greimas correctly to find the deep structure of the narrative of Frozen. The results of the narrative analysis based on the actantial model and the semiotic square show that Frozen is not Elsa's heroic narrative but Anna's one. Because Elsa and Anna are the opposing elements in this narrative, the success of Anna is the failure of Elsa. Frozen does not convey the subversive message about the gender roles by representing an independent and active woman who resists the patriarchal discourse. Instead, Frozen reproduces the conformist ideology by saying that love is the most valuable thing and that everyone should accept the role given to him/her by the community.

  • It is very common to produce fairytales, folktales, or fables into animations. If they often transform existing works into animations, we may have to examine how they change the original to communicate with the audience and also how they change the original's subject matter or theme to create meaning. The purpose of this study is to consider how the original's meaning and value were changed as Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, "The Snow Queen", was converted into an animation, , and also how it influenced the work itself. To attain the goal, this author is going to comparatively analyze the two works' narratives, actants, and semiotic squares by using A.J. Greimas' semiology. According to the findings, although "The Snow Queen" expresses the desire to go back to happy days in the past, it is not a simple return to the past but a stepwise process to become mature mentally as well as religiously. Meanwhile, intends to generate past-oriented meaning expressing the desire to return what is abnormal in the present to what was normal in the past and resolve the individual and religious aspects of "The Snow Queen" in a social and popular way.
