  • This research supports the idea that manipulative devices can be an effective modality tool for learning abstract concepts involved with identifying geometric shapes and enhance learners' problem solving and motivation. Until recently specified manipulative device has been adapted only in traditional classroom environment and it has been very rare to find devices that is designed for online-basis. This study focused on designing and implementing an educational software which guide learners with geoboard in identification and characteristics of polygons. In addition to the function to draw and to delete various shapes, this software helps learners immediately assess the outcome. The results of the Delphi Technique show promising evidence for it being a very efficient means to learn geometric shapes and increase learners' motivation to learn the subject matter.

  • Plate buckling is very important design criteria when the ship is composed of high tensile steel plates. In general, the plate element contributes to inplane stiffness against the action of inplane load. If the inplane stiffness of the plating decreases due to buckling including the secondary buckling, the flexural rigidity of the cross section of a ship's hull also decreases. In these cases, the precise estimation of plate's behaviour after buckling is necessary, and geometric nonlinear behaviour of isolated plates is required for structural system analysis. In this connection, the author investigated the geometric nonlinear behaviour of simply supported rectangular plates under uniaxial compression in the longitudinal direction in which the principle of minimum potential energy method is employed. Based on the energy method, elastic large deflection analysis of isolated palate is performed and simple expression are derived to discuss the bifurcation paint type buckling and limit point type buckling.

  • The performance of antenna reflectors crucially depends on the faceting error of the surface. The force density method (FDM) has been widely used for the form-finding analysis of the cable nets of reflectors. However, after performing form-finding of some cable nets, the effective reflective area will decrease. In addition, nonlinear deformations of the cable can not be achieved by using the FDM. Thus, an effective form-find methodology is proposed in this research. The whole parts of the cable networks are described by the absolute nodal coordinate formulation. The form-finding analysis of the reflector with standard configuration is performed to validate the proposed methodology. The influence of boundary condition changes on the configuration accuracy of the cable net is investigated.

  • In this paper, we propose the react-time car license plate recognition algorithm using intensity variation and geometric pattern vector. Generally, difference of car license plate region between character and background is more noticeable than other regions. And also, car license plate region usually shows high density values as well as constant intensity variations. Based on these characteristics, we first extract car license plate region using intensity variations. Secondly, lightness compensation process is performed on the considerably dark and brightness input images to acquire constant extraction efficiency. In the proposed recognition step, we first pre-process noise reduction and thinning steps. And also, we use geometric pattern vector to extract features which independent on the size, translation, and rotation of input values. In the experimental results, the proposed method shows better computation times than conventional circular pattern vector and better extraction results regardless of irregular environment lighting conditions as well as noise, size, and location of plate.

  • A higher order plate bending finite element using cubic in-plane displacement profiles is proposed for geometrically nonlinear analysis of thin and thick plates. The higher order plate bending element has been derived from the three dimensional plate-like continuum by discretization of the equations of motion by Galerkin weighted residual method, together with enforcing higher order plate assumptions. Total Lagrangian formulation has been used for geometrically nonlinear analysis of plates and consistent linearization by Newton-Raphson method has been performed to solve the nonlinear equations. The element characteristics have been computed by, selective reduced integration technique using Gauss quadrature to avoid shear locking phenomenon in case of extremely thin plates. Several numerical examples were solved with FEAP macro program to demonstrate versatility and accuracy of the present higher order plate bending element.

  • Conventional approaches for car number plate detection have dealt with those input images having similar sizes and simple background acquired under well organized environment. Thus their performance get reduced when input images include number plates with different sizes and when they are acquired under different lighting conditions. To solve these problem, this paper proposes a new scheme that uses the geometrical features of number plates and their topological information with reference to other features of the car. In the first step, those edges constructing a rectangle are detected and several pixels neighboring those edges are selected as the seed pixels for region growing. For region growing, color and intensity are used as the features, and the result regions are merged to construct the candidate for a number plate if their features are within a certain boundary. Once the candidates for the number plates are generated then their topological relations with other parts of the car such as lights are tested to finally determine the number plate region. The experimental results have shown that the proposed method can be used even for detecting small size number plates where characters are not visible.

  • Recently, the character image processing technology using portable device camera image at home and abroad are actively conducted, but Practical use are lower rate because of accuracy and time-consuming process problems. In this paper, we propose the license plate recognition method based on geometric information from portable device camera image. In the extracted license plate region we recognize characters using the chain code and the Thickness information through the cumulative projected edge after performing the pre-processing work considering the angle difference, the contrast enhancement and the low resolution from portable device camera image. The proposed algorithm is effective and accurate recognition by light and reducing the processing time. And, the results from the character recognition success rate was 95%. In the future, we will research about license plate recognition algorithm using long distance image or added motion blur image.

  • This study investigates a geometrical nonlinear dynamic behaviors of laminated skew plates made of advanced composite materials (ACM). Based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory (FSDT), the Newmark method and Newton-Raphson iteration are used for the nonlinear dynamic solution. The effects of cutout sizes, skew angles and lay up sequences on the nonlinear dynamic response for various parameters are studied using a nonlinear dynamic finite element program developed for this study. The several numerical results were in good agreement with those reported by other investigators for square composite plates with or without central cutouts, and the new results reported in this paper show the significant interactions between the cutout, skew angles and layup sequence in the laminate. Key observation points are discussed and a brief design guideline of skew laminates is given.
