This paper deals with the elastica of deflected cantilever column with the constant volume. The columns are subjected to combined loads consisted of an axial compressive load and a couple moment at the free end. Differential equations governing the elastica of such column are derived, in which both the effects of taper type and shear deformation are included. Three kinds of taper types are considered: linear, parabolic and sinusoidal tapers. Differential equations are solved numerically to obtain the elastica of objective columns. The effects of various system parameters on the elastica are investigated extensively. Experimental studies were carried out in order to verify the theoretical results of non-linear behavior of the elasticas.

A solution strategy for geometric non-linear analysis for the plane frame structures subjected to conservative and non-conservative forces is presented. By making efficient combination of the load incremental method and the displacement incremental method, this strategy can find postbuckling configuration such as snap-through and turning-back phenomena which cannot be easily found by the conventional load and displacement incrementation scheme. In the case of the analysis of the framed structure subjected to circulatory non-conservative forces, the total tangent stiffness matrix becomes unsymmetric and when calculating the incremental load and unbalanced load vector components, the direction change of the non-conservative forces is considered. Several example problems to demonstrate the feasibility of the present strategy, over ranges of deformation that are well beyond those likly to occur in practical framed structures, are given and discussed.
This paper summarizes a dynamic analysis of the shallow circular arches under dynamic loading, considering the geometric nonlinearity. The major emphasis is placed on the development of computer program, which is utilized for the analysis of the nonlinear dynamic behavior and for the evaluation of the critical buckling loads of the shallow circular arches. Geometric nonlinearity is modeled using Lagrangian description of the motion and a finite element analysis procedure is used to solve the dynamic equation of motion. A circular arch subject to normal step load is analyzed and the results are compared with those from other researches to verify the developed program. The critical buckling loads of arches are estimated using the non-dimensional time, load and shape parameters and the results are also compared with those from the linear analysis. It is found that geometric nonlinearity plays and important role in the analysis of shallow arches and the probability of buckling failure is getting higher as arches become shallower.
The paper is concerned with the elasto-plastic and geometrically nonlinear analysis of shell structures using an improved degenerated shell element. In the formulation of the element stiffness, the combined use of three different techniques was made. They are; 1) an enhanced interpolation of transverse shear strains in the natural coordinate system to overcome the shear locking problem ; 2) the reduced integration technique in in-plane strains to avoid the membrane locking behavior ; and 3) selective addition of the nonconforming displacement modes to improve the element performances. This element is free of serious shear/membrane locking problems and undesirable compatible/commutable spurious kinematic deformation modes. In the formulation for plastic deformation, the concept of a layered element model is used and the material is assumed von Mises yield criterion. An incremental total Lagrangian formulation is presented which allows the calculation of arbitrarily large displacements and rotations. The resulting non-linear equilibrium equations are solved by the Netwon-Raphson method combined with load or displacement increment. The versatility and accuracy of this improved degenerated shell element are demonstrated by solving several numerical examples.
The goal of this paper is to apply the multi-step Taylor method to a space truss, a non-linear discrete dynamic system, and analyze the non-linear dynamic response and unstable behavior of the structures. The accurate solution based on an analytical approach is needed to deal with the inverse problem, or the dynamic instability of a space truss, because the governing equation has geometrical non-linearity. Therefore, the governing motion equations of the space truss were formulated by considering non-linearity, where an accurate analytical solution could be obtained using the Taylor method. To verify the accuracy of the applied method, an SDOF model was adopted, and the analysis using the Taylor method was compared with the result of the 4th order Runge-Kutta method. Moreover, the dynamic instability and buckling characteristics of the adopted model under step excitation was investigated. The result of the comparison between the two methods of analysis was well matched, and the investigation shows that the dynamic response and the attractors in the phase space can also delineate dynamic snapping under step excitation, and damping affects the displacement of the truss. The analysis shows that dynamic buckling occurs at approximately 77% and 83% of the static buckling in the undamped and damped systems, respectively.

In this paper, the optimal design of trusses using advanced analysis and genetic algorithm is performed. An advanced analysis takes into account geometric nonlinearity and material nonlinearity. The micro genetic algorithm is used as optimization technique. The weight of structures is treated as the objective function. The constraint functions are defined by load-carrying capacities and displacement requirement. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by comparing the results of the proposed method with those of other method.
The effects of fiber waviness on tensile/compressive nonlinear elastic behaviors of graphite/epoxy unidirectional composite materials are studied theoretically and experimentally. New constitutive models are proposed to predict elastic properties and tensile/compressive nonlinear behaviors of composite materials. Three types of wavy pattern are considered: uniform, graded and localized fiber waviness. Complementary energy density and incremental method are used to incorporate the material and geometrical nonlinearities due to fiber waviness. Tensile/compressive tests are conducted on the specimens with fiber waviness. It is found that the predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results.
A co-rotational quasi-conforming formulation of four- node stress resultant shell elements using Ivanov-Ilyushin yield criteria are presented for the nonlinear analysis of plate and shell structure. The formulation of the geometrical stiffness is defined by the full definition of the Green strain tensor and it is efficient for analyzing stability problems of moderately thick plates and shells as it incorporates the bending moment and transverse shear resultant force. As a result of the explicit integration of the tangent stiffness matrix, this formulation is computationally very efficient in incremental nonlinear analysis. This formulation also integrates the elasto-plastic material behaviour using Ivanov Ilyushin yield condition with isotropic strain hardening and its asocia ted flow rules. The Ivanov Ilyushin plasticity, which avoids multi-layer integration, is computationally efficient in large-scale modeling of elasto-plastic shell structures. The numerical examples herein illustrate a satisfactory concordance with test ed and published references.

This study deals with thegeometrical nonlinear dynamic behavior of laminated plates made of advanced composite materials (ACMs), which contain central cutouts. Based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory (FSDT), the Newmark method and Newton-Raphson iteration wereused for the nonlinear dynamic solution. The effects of the cutout sizes and lay-up sequences on the nonlinear dynamic response for various parameters werestudied using a nonlinear dynamic finite element program that was developed for this study. The several numerical results agreed well with those reported by other investigators for square composite plates with or without central cutouts, and the new results reported in this paper showed significant interactions between the cutout and the layup sequence in the laminate. Key observation points are discussed and a brief design guide for laminates with central cutouts is given.
