  • The objective of this study is to establish the fundamental design data for axial load-displacement relationship under axial monotonic or cyclic responses of seismic damping·isolation (SDI) units developed for ceiling structures. The main parameters include the installation of a spring, the number of rubber layer, prestress stress of bolts for connector between the spring and rubbers, and loading type. Test results showed that SDI units with a spring in the core and higher prestress stress of bolts tended to be higher stiffness at the ascending branch and more ductile behavior at the descending branch. This trends more notable for the specimens under monotonic load rather than cyclic loads. Consequently, the energy dissipation of SDI unit can be optimally designed with the following conditions: installation of a spring within 3-layer rubbers and prestress applied to the bolts at 10% of their yielding strength . When compared with the experimental tension capacity of the developed SDI units, the predictions by JIS B 2704-1 and KDS 31 00 are conservative under monotonic loading but higher by approximately 10% under cyclic loading.

  • In Korea, which is mostly mountainous, the proportion of tunnel and underground space development are increasing. Although the ground is reinforced by applying the ground improvement method during underground space development, accidents still occur frequently in Korea. In the grouting method, a representative ground reinforcement method, the effect was judged by comparing the total amount of injection material with the amount of injection material used during the actual grouting construction. However, it is difficult to determine whether the ground reinforcement is properly performed during construction or within the target ground. In order to solve this problem, it is necessary to study a new method for quality control during or after construction by measuring electrical resistivity after performing grouting by mixing carbon fiber, which is a conductive material, and microcement, which is a grout material. In this study, as a basic study, a cement specimen mix ed with 0%, 3%, 5%, 7% of carbon fiber was prepared to evaluate the performance of the grout material mixed with carbon fiber, which is a conductive material. The prepared specimens were wet curing for 3 days, 7 days, and 28 days under 99% humidity, and then compression wave velocity and shear wave velocity were measured. As a result of the compression wave velocity and shear wave velocity measurement, it showed a tendency to increase with the increase in the compounding ratio of carbon fibers and the number of days of age, and it was confirmed that the elastic modulus and shear modulus, which are the stiffness of the material, also increased.

  • South Korea has recently witnessed an increasing number of seismic events, leading to a surge in studies focusing on seismic earth pressures, as well as the attributes of geological layers and ground where foundations are established. Consequently, earthquake-resistant design has become imperative to ensure the safety of subterranean structures. The slurry wall method, due to its superior wall rigidity, excellent water resistance, and minimal noise and vibration, is often employed in constructing high-rise buildings in urban areas. However, given the separation between panels that constitute the wall, slurry walls possess limited resistance to seismic loads in the longitudinal direction. As a solution, several studies have probed into the possibility of interconnecting slurry wall panels to augment their seismic performance. In this research, we developed and evaluated a method for linking slurry wall panels using mechanical joints, including concrete-confined steel pipes and headed bars, through mock-up tests. We also assessed the constructability of the suggested method and compared it with other analogous methods. Any challenges identified during the mock-up test were discussed to guide future research in resolving them. The results of this study aid in enhancing the seismic performance of slurry walls through the development of an interconnected panel method. Further research can build on these findings to address the identified issues and improve the efficacy and reliability of the proposed method.

  • The design concept of high speed railway bridges is applied to a method for increasing the stiffness of existing bridge structures considering the impact factor by a static load. Generally, the process of structural design would be relied upon an advanced foreign technology. However, the dynamic amplification factor (DAF) and dynamic capacity assessment of high speed railway bridges may be conducted essentially a detailed estimation because the resonance phenomenon is affected by the long length (380 m) and high speed (300 km/h) moving of a high speed railway (Korea Train eXpress: KTX). Therefore, this study will be examined the dynamic capacity of the typical PSC Box Girder high speed railway bridge efficiently, and offered the basic information for the reasonable structural design. For this, the static analysis is conducted considering the load line diagram of KTX based upon existing references. In addition, the KTX moving load is transformed into the time series load considering various analytical variables. The time history analysis is assessed reasonable using the transformed time series load. At that time, analytical variables for calculating the time series load are considered loading node distance, time increment and KTX velocity variation etc. The dynamic capacity of the PSC Box Girder high speed railway bridge is examined based upon the FE analysis result systematically. The structural safety is assessed quantitatively in accordance with the related regulation of the inside and outside of the country.

  • A constitutive model, which can simulate the effect of principal stress rotation associated with direct simple shear test, is proposed in this study. The model is based on two mobilized planes. The plastic strains occur from the two mobilized planes, and depend on stress state, and they are added. The first plane is a plane of maximum shear stress, which rotates about the horizontal axis, and the second plane is a horizontal plane which is spatially fixed. The second plane is used to consider the effect of principal stress rotation on simple shear tests under different stress states. The soil skeleton behavior observed in drained simple shear tests is captured in the model. This constitutive model is incorporated into the dynamic coupled stress-flow finite difference program FLAC. The model is first calibrated with drained simple shear tests on loose Fraser River sand. The measured shear stress and volume change are partially induced by principal stress rotation and compared with model calculations. The model is verified by comparing predicted and measured settlements due to rigid footing resting on loose sands. Settlements predicted by the proposed model were very similar to measured settlements. Mohr-Coulomb model can not consider the effect of principal stress rotation and its prediction was only 20% of measured settlements.

  • Generally, poly-urea is widely used as waterproof coating material due to its superior adhesiveness, elongation capacity, and permeability resistance. In addition, it can be quickly and easily applied on structure surfaces using spray application. Since it hardens in about 30 seconds after application, its construction efficiency is very high and its usage as a special functional material is also excellent. However, currently, poly-urea is mostly used as waterproof coating material and the researches on its usage as a retrofitting material is lacking at best. Therefore, basic studies on the use of poly-urea as a general structural retrofitting material are needed urgently. The objective of this study is to develop most optimum poly-urea composition for structure retrofitting purpose. Moreover, the structural strengthening capacity of the developed poly-urea is evaluated through flexural capacity experiments on RC beams and RC slabs. From the results of the flexural test of poly-urea strengthened RC beam and slab specimens, the poly-urea and concrete specimen showed monolithic behavior where ductility and ultimate strength of the poly-urea strengthened specimen showed slight increase. However, the doubly reinforced specimens with FRP sheet and poly-urea showed lower capacity than that of the specimen reinforced only with FRP sheet.

  • To investigate the impact of forestry projects on the carbon stocks of forests, we estimated the carbon stock change of above-ground and soil before and after forestry projects using forest type maps, forestry project information, and soil information. First, we selected six map sheet with large areas and declining age class based on forest type map information. Then, we collected data such as forest type maps, growth coefficients, soil organic matter content, and soil bulk density of the estimated areas to calculate forest carbon storage. As a result, forest carbon stocks decreased by about 34.1~70.0% after forestry projects at all sites. In addition, compared to reference studies, domestic forest soils store less carbon than the above-ground, so it is judged that domestic forest soils have great potential to store more carbon and strategies to increase carbon storage are needed. It was estimated that the amount of carbon stored before forestry projects is about 1.5 times more than after forestry projects. The study estimated that it takes about 27 years for forests to recover to their pre-thinning carbon stocks following forestry projects. Since it takes a long time for forests to recover to their original carbon stocks once their carbon stocks are reduced by physical damage, it is necessary to plan to preserve them as much as possible, especially for highly conservative forests, so that they can maintain their carbon storage function.

  • Purpose: Looking at the status of fatal accidents in the construction industry in the 2022 Industrial Accident Status Supplementary Statistics, 27.8% of all fatal accidents in the construction industry are caused by construction equipment. In order to overcome the limitations of tours and inspections caused by the enlargement of sites and high-rise buildings, we plan to build a model that can extract construction equipment using computer vision technology and analyze the model's accuracy and field applicability. Method: In this study, deep learning is used to learn image data from excavators, dump trucks, and mobile cranes among construction equipment, and then the learning results are evaluated and analyzed and applied to construction sites. Result: At site 'A', objects of excavators and dump trucks were extracted, and the average extraction accuracy was 81.42% for excavators and 78.23% for dump trucks. The mobile crane at site 'B' showed an average accuracy of 78.14%. Conclusion: It is believed that the efficiency of on-site safety management can be increased and the risk factors for disaster occurrence can be minimized. In addition, based on this study, it can be used as basic data on the introduction of smart construction technology at construction sites.
