  • We prepared non-porous membrane on the $Al_2O_3$ substrate with the different pore by the size by the plasma polymerization of $CHF_3$. We studied the permeability characteristics of membrane by Ar treatment and the effect of substrate pore size on gas permeation mechanism. The selectivity was increased with Ar plasma treatment time and rf-power near the substrate to the cathode while the permeability was decreased. It was observed that the solution-diffusion model would be applied to non-porous layers while it is applied Knudsen diffusion model to the substrate. From the experimental observation, it could be concluded that the pore size of $Al_2O_3$ membrane influenced on the permeability and the selectivity.

  • The effect of various cellulosic and hemicellulosic substrates on the induction of cellulase and xylanase complexes in Aapergillus nidulans was investigated. The most efficient substrates for the induction of cellulase and xylanase complexes were carboxymethylcellulose for endoglucanase, cellobiose for ${\beta}-glucosidase$, and xylan for endoxylanase and ${\beta}-xylosidase$, respectively. However, the mixtures of these substrates, especially CMC-xylan and CMC-xylan-laminarin mixture, were much more effective not only for the enhancement of the biosynthesis of all the cellulase and xylanase complexes but also for the balanced production of these enzyme components than individual substrate. The polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by activity staining showed the variation in the patterns and relative intensity of ${\beta}-glucosidase$, endoglucanase and endoxylanase components in individual enzyme preparations from A. nidulans cultures grown on different substrates. These results suggest that the biosynthesis is of cellulase and xylanase systems in A. nidulans is regulated in coordination at the level of induction.

  • The research was undertaken to characterize the reaction mode of transglucosidase (TG) from Aspergillus niger for the production of isomaltooligosaccharides such as isomaltose, panose and isomaltotriose. TG hydrolyzed maltose to glucose units and produced panose and glucose by transglucosylation. TG hydrolyzed panose to maltose and glucose when panose was used as an initial substrate. The reaction patterns of products when isomaltose, isomaltotriose or isomaltotetraose were used as substrates were different from the case when maltose was used as a substrate. Maltotriose and maltose showed the same formation pattern of products. TG also produced isomaltooligosaccharides from maltooligosaccharides. The production of panote by TG from maltose was mathematically described by Michaelis-Menten kinetics. The kinetic constants, $V_{max}$ (the maximum velocity) and $K_m$ (Michaelis constant), were estimated by Lineweaver-Burk plot to be 400 M/min and 21.4 mM, respectively.

  • Objectives: To compare the biogenetic temperament and character patterns of subjects with narcolepsy and those of healthy control subjects. Methods: Twenty-two subjects with narcolepsy, diagnosed with the International Classification of Sleep Disorder (ICSD) criteria, and 22 healthy control subjects were recruited. The Korean version of the Temperament and Character Inventory was administered to all subjects. Results: Compared to healthy control subjects, subjects with narcolepsy showed significantly higher Novelty-Seeking (ANCOVA, F=5.42, p=0.025), lower Persistence (F=8.41, p=0.006) and lower Self-Directedness scores (F=4.70, p=0.036). Conclusion: Narcoleptic patients have a distinct pattern of biogenetic temperament and character. Our findings suggest that narcoleptic patients are exploratory in response to novelty but give up easily. In addition, our findings show that narcoleptic patients consider themselves ineffective, purposeless, and fragile.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relations between the quality of teacher-child relationship, child temperament, and teacher-child interaction. The subjects were 51 3-4 years old children who were attending a preschool in Seoul and their mothers. The mothers of the young children rated child temperament and the head teachers of the children evaluated the quality of teacher-child relationship. The frequency of teacher-child interactions in the classroom was collected through observation during self-selected activities in the classrooms. Observational data included frequency of teacher-initiated interactions and number of child-initiated interactions. The results showed that boys were more likely to have conflictual relationships with teachers and girls were likely to have close relationships with teachers. And lower levels of effortful control were associated with teacher-child conflict. More child-initiated interactions were related to the conflict relationships with teachers. Results suggest that child characteristics and teacher-child interactions contribute to children's relationships with teachers.

  • In December 2006, the Ministry of Environment Republic of Korea established the guideline which is "Indoor Air Quality Management Guidelines in Public Transportation." as control items, $CO_2$ (carbon dioxide) and PM10 (particle matter) are classified two categories, that is, Level 1 (non-rush hour), Level 2 (rush hour). Therefore, the quality of air in train and subway should be controlled in accordance with the guideline. We took a measure the air freshness inside train twice at Line 4 (Tangogae-Oido), in Sep. 2007 and at Line 1 (Dongincheon-Yongsan) in Nov. 2007, respectively and, also expected the emitted $CO_2$ concentration by using a property of matter such as EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) design reviewing specification and air. According to the measured values, the concentration of PM10 was 44, 57, 45% and the concentration of $CO_2$ was 39, 36, 44% respectively, all measured values are within the guideline and also, as a result we found the expected value and measured value are similar.

  • The aim of this research was to verify the mediating effects of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and distress tolerance on the relationship between harm avoidance and depression. A total of 403 university students completed TCI-RS(Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised Short version), AEQ-K(Ambivalence over Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire-Korean), DTS (Distress Tolerance Scale) and CES-D(The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale). The results revealed that harm avoidance and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness were positively related with depression, and negatively related with distress tolerance. In addition, the relationship of harm avoidance and depression was successively mediated by ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and distress tolerance. That is, the motivation of emotional expression conflict may have an effect on depression and the distress tolerance would play an important role in therapeutic intervention of depression.

  • There is a growing interest in the education of gifted children nation-wide. The present study was performed to find out characteristics of students who are receiving special education as gifted using a new psychological inventory which measures the temperament and charcter separately. We compared students who have been selected for their trlent in math and science with students who do well academically. Academic competence was operationally defined by grades or by IQ. Gifted children are usually thought to be characterized by an innate ability, and it was expected that there would be some difference between temperaments of the gifted group and those of the academically competent group. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups not only in their temperaments, but also in other sub-scales of character. This result suggests that in spite of the extensive effort and cost involved in the selection process, the children who are currently selected as gifted show no distinction when compared to academically competent students. Based on the results some practical suggestions were made in order to improve the selection of the gifted children.
