  • Modern versions of supersonic jet fighter aircraft have several different weapon loading configuration to support air-to-air combat and air-to-ground delivery of weapon modes. These various aircraft loading conditions could result in asymmetric configurations to the aircraft once delivered. These asymmetric configurations could result in decreased handling qualities for the pilot maneuvering, stability, control issues and aerodynamic performance of the aircraft. In order to eliminate or decrease these adverse impacts on the pilot's ability, development of T-50 flight control law attempts to control the aircraft in both longitudinal and lateral-directional axes. Especially, the design of the lateral-directional roll axis control laws, utilizing a simple roll rate feedback structure and gains such as F-16, is developed for the T-50 aircraft to meet the aircraft's design requirements. Consequently, it is found that the improved control law decreases the roll-off phenomenon in lateral axes during pitch maneuver.

  • Military helicopter is exposed to the enemy gun firing due to the low altitude flight of contour flight, hovering & nap of the Earth flight, therefore it has the high possibility to be exploded by the gun firing. Recently the Anti-ballistic requirement is required to get the high level of safety from gun firing in required operational capability. The first military utility helicopter of SURION has the Anti-ballistic requirement and explosion proof. In order to meet the requirement, OBIGGS is adopted for the first time in KUH. It is proven that Anti-Explosion capability is satisfied to requirement for improving vent system which was insufficiently designed in development period and related to Anti-explosion.

  • This paper presents development activities of the T700/701K turbo-shaft engine for Korean Utility Helicopter(KUH). The T700/701K is the first rear-drive variant of the GE's T700 engine which is proven for military applications in the world. The main workscope of the development includes a modification from a front-drive engine to a rear-drive one, an performance enhancement of the power turbine and an incorporation of two channel FADEC(Full Authority Digital Engine Control) system for more reliable operation. The first engine run for development and qualification test was successfully completed in 2008. Since the PFRT(Preliminary Flight Rating Test) has been completed, the first flight of the engine installed in the first prototype of KUH has been successfully demonstrated in March, 2010 and the engine installation compatibility tests are being carried out during KUH flight test. The test and evaluation for qualification has been done except for the low cycle fatigue test up to date.

  • This paper shows an approximate equation which calculates a flapping angle of blade for verification of KUH safety area. The flapping behavior of blade must be reviewed in an aspect of safety because of a collision possibility with airframe. However, it is difficult to measure an exact flapping angle during flight. A prediction equation of a coning angle is derived from aeromechanics and that of a dynamic flapping angle is derived from analysis results in development phase, respectively. Following, the equations are verified by comparison the flapping angle through an aircraft simulation test to a calculation. Finally, the safety area, which was established in development phase, is verified by calculating a flapping angle during the flight which is required by the terms of safety based on AC29 and FAR29.

  • In this paper, design, development and evaluation of DIP(Database Interface Program) are presented. The main purpose of this study is to improve the simulation quality to get more realistic response of target system. The designed and developed major function is composed of flexible memory structure, efficient arithmetic database language and high speed interpolation/extrapolation algorithm. To evaluate the operation speed and accuracy of returned data, trim simulation is performed based on in-house software and, DIP is applied to existing real-time simulator such as engineering HQS(Handling Quality Simulator) to evaluate reliability and performance. The result of evlaution reveals that calculation speed and data accuracy are satisfied, and flight performance is satisfied in the real-time simulator environments.

  • An anti-collision light of a rotary-wing aircraft is used for the purpose of preventing collision during the operation of an aircraft and is a key component to ensure flight safety. The anti-collision lights of the Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) consist of upper and lower lights, and the power supply of anti-collision lights mounted on the aircraft. The anti-collision light is designed as a dual structure capable of brightness control and selective lighting. During the operation after delivery of the aircraft, abnormal lighting of anti-collision light occurred. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the aircraft system and component level was conducted to solve these phenomena at first. Then, the causes of anti-collision light anomalies were analyzed and the design changes are presented. The validity of design changes has been verified through the component and aircraft system ground/flight test.

  • This paper presents qualification process of the T700/701K turbo-shaft engine for Korean Utility Helicopter(KUH). The T700/701K is the rear-drive variant of the GE's T700-701C/D engine which was qualified for military applications in the world. The main scope of the development is the modification from a front-drive engine to a rear-drive one, the performance enhancement of the power turbine and the incorporation of two channel FADEC(Full Authority Digital Engine Control) system for more reliable operation. Therefore, T700/701K engine must be qualified by Korean government in order to perform a flight in the country. Reflecting the influence of developing scope, the main requirements including performance and control are verified by test and analysis, while the requirement for module or component that is same to that of T700-701C/D are verified by similarity.

  • This paper analyzes the effects of sideslip angle(SA) on the buzz margin of supersonic intake. The buzz margin is assumed to be stabilized by a controller which generates command depending only on the longitudinal sensor measurements. The analysis is performed based on three dimensional CFD results with which the sensor measurements can be simulated. In such a control system based on the longitudinal measurements, unexpected lateral flow perturbation results in the increase in the total angle of attack(TAoA), that causes the degradation of the engine intake performance. As a consequence, it is shown that the control stability is reduced such that additional control margin needs to be secured.

  • Inside a rotorcraft fuel cell, pipes and components are located for fuel storage and fuel supply into the engine. Utility helicopters, operated in battle fields, fly at lower altitude compared to fixed-wing aircraft and hence are more likely to be exposed to gunfire. Since internal pressure of fluid increases when hit, the effect on LRU due to increase in pressure must taken into account when designing the aircraft for survivability. However, it is costly and time consuming to manufacture a fuel cell for gunfire test, and due to constraints from usage of live ammunition, related data gathered through numerical simulation is needed. In this study, numerical simulation on rotorcraft fuel cell exposed to gunfire was carried out using Autodyn to analyze bullet movement inside the fuel cell after hit, and internal pressure of fluid and equivalent stress on fuel cell assessed.
