A study on the shape and decorative techniques of earpick during the Goryeo-Joseon Period (고려~조선시대 귀이개 형태와 장식기법)

  • This paper examines the material culture of the Goryeo-Joseon Period through changes in the design and crafting of the earpick. In Chapter 2, terminology regarding earpicks is presented, and the culture of using earpicks is examined through fragmentary literature of the late Joseon Dynasty. Earpicks were first a personal hygiene tool, and, secondly, they played a symbolic role as a style accessory used by men, analogous to the fan carried by women of the time. In Chapter 3, earpick form are classified by period, and characteristic decorative techniques for each form are examined. During the Goryeo Dynasty, earpicks were sanitary tools, and, according to their form, they were classified into single and complex types. From Unified Silla to Goryeo, there is an angled type of connecting rod, and in the Goryeo period, there appeared earpicks with colorful decorations on the handle, completely forged earpicks with a thin and long shape, and earpicks which were part of multitools. Common decorative techniques include line expression, gold plating, cheophomun on the background, and inlay. Earpicks of the Joseon Dynasty are classified into sanitary tools or ornaments, according to their purpose of use. Sanitary tools are divided into single type and complex type, and earpicks used as ornaments include headdress, norigae, and sunchu. For earpick accessories, headdresses and norigae were used for women, and sunchu was used for men. The decorative techniques of earpicks during the Joseon Dynasty were mainly seen in the headdress earpicks. They were decorated with various colors in the Cloisonné method or bejeweled. Research on everyday tools among crafts is lacking; greater attempts to read the flow of time and approaches to material culture through everyday tools should be made.

  • The sarira reliquary excavated as a lot of fragments were restored by conservation treatment by us. The sarira reliquary was made using fine techniques such as chasing work and engraving work, etc. The analysis of base metals showed that different materials had been used on decorative parts in consideration of the casting and forging technique. Gold granules $(97wt\%\;Au)$ of the small bell were adhered by using a soldering material $(85wt\%\;Au,\;10wt\%\;Ag)$. The lead isotope analysis of lead glass $(74wt\%\;PbO)$ revealed that it agreed with the lead mine in the middle of south area in Korea.

A Study on Metal Molding Using Line Transformation and Repetition - Using phosphor bronze wire (선의 변형과 반복을 활용한 금속조형 연구 - 인청동선을 활용하여)

  • This study, which was begun in order to create a metal molding by using lines, a basic element of design, examined various characteristics and concept of line and the beauty of lines based on previous research on the subject. The result showed that formative interpretation of lines largely depends on intentional expression by using thickness and rhythm of lines. In order to obtain a metal molding that provides both visual freedom and beauty, rather than the conventional formative expression of lines, I used red copper plate and Phosphor bronze line for creating a pattern based on transformation and repetition of lines and an artwork based on the pattern. The result was not only a creation of a plane but the senses of three-dimension, speed, and unity in the overall shape. Further research will need to be conducted regarding formative interpretation of lines and emotional and intrinsic beauty through expression of lines.

A study of metal environment sculptures using good design (굿디자인을 활용한 금속환경조형물 연구)

  • This study started with the design methodology for externally installed metal sculptures. As the scope and meaning of design grows, the concept of design is also used for externally installed sculptures, and there is a demand for a sculpture design that contains the story of the installation environment while being suitable for the surrounding environment. This concept is defined as an environmental sculpture only among formative artists. The concept of environmental sculptures is not fully known and academic research is also insufficiently performed. Therefore, in order to define externally installed sculptures as environmental sculptures, this study elaborated the concept and conditions of good design and the concept and role of environmental sculptures as a theoretical background, and classified the concepts and conditions of good design and the concepts and roles of environmental sculptures. Based on the previous theoretical studies, by utilizing the conditions of good design and the role of environmental sculptures, this study suggested that design development elements were completed as metal environmental sculptures and research works were presented. In conclusion, the design methodology for metal environmental sculptures has been presented, and various environmental sculpture design studies will continue and various paradigms of convergence environmental sculptures will be studied.

  • 철이나 동은 BC5000~3000년부터 도구류, 장식품 등으로 인류의 역사에 등장하고 있는데 반해 알루미늄 재료는 공업용 재료로써의 기초가 확립된 후 아직 100년이 채 못되고 있지만 건종 성 질이 우수하기 때문에 이러한 특성을 이용해서 항공기용 재료, 전선, 기물, 일반프레스 가공품, 제메이스류, 일반 기계부품, 콘덴서용 및 포장용 상자, 도료 및 잉크 원료 화포 재료, 환원재용 분말, 차량, 건축용 재료 등에 사용되고 있고 이용도는 제 2차대전후에 건축, 차량, 조선, 채광, 교량, 화학, 섬유식품 공예 등과 같은 공업분야에 널리 새로운 용도로 개척이 되어 응용이 되고 있다. 이와 같이 그 용도 분야가 다양화되고 적으로도 철, 다음가는 금속재료로 성장하고 있기 때문에 "알루미늄 재료 기술"이라는 이름으로 각종 자료들을 정리 하다보니 너무나도 그 범위가 광범위하여 본 글에서 제외된 알루미늄 재료의 성분, 선정, 지침, 물리. 화학. 기계성질, 형상과 그의 제작범위, 구조설계, 절삭가공, 접합, 표면처리, 단조 등에 대한 여러 가지 자료는 지면관 계로 별도로 정리를 해서 다음 기회에 소개하고자 한다. 소개하고자 한다.

  • As the quality of our life has improved, residential complexes have become more diverse now. Modern residential complexes function as a place for meeting and communication between families and neighbors, including parks, lakes, and promenades, and exhibiting sculptures in residential spaces has become an important component. This study was conducted for the purpose of researching the design development method for the sculptures displayed in the residential space in accordance with these changes and demands of the era. Through the process of visualizing the figurative arts with metal and stone used as materials, the artist's thoughts and messages were put in the sculpture and the arts were completed as the shape of the sculpture that viewers could sympathize with. This design and formative research shows the possibility that various visual elements for sympathy with the creator's thoughts can be formed in a place with the specificity of living space by using a figurative visualization method. Therefore, further researches on figurative art of sculptures are required.

A Study on the Design of Metal Chopsticks using 3D Modeling System -Focused on the utilization of Korean cultural elements- (3D 모델링 시스템을 활용한 금속젓가락 디자인 연구 -한국의 문화요소 활용을 중심으로-)

  • The purposes of this study are to review the designs of chopsticks which are the tableware we use in our daily lives, and to explore the possibilities of 3D Modeling System applications to improve their designs that will add the beauty of dining by sublating uniform and limited designs of the Korean chopsticks. To do so, this researcher was produced prototypes to be a unique cultural content through delicate expression using 3D Modeling while utilizing the Korean cultural elements as the design elements. After its production, unique design for chopsticks could be developed with the Korean characteristics. Like the case of this prototype, 3D Modeling and 3D Printing can help seek the new designs of chopsticks and improve the quality by multiple simulations. Also, it will assist to develop cultural contents that can play a role of the Korean cultural goods.

A Scientific Analysis of Decorative Metal Foil Used in Pouch for the Sutra Embroidered with a Sun and Moon Design Designated as National Folklore Cultural Heritage (국가민속문화재 일월수 다라니 주머니 금속 장식지의 과학적 분석)

  • Through scientific analysis, this study identified the material characteristics of metal foil decorating the border line and knotting of the National Folklore Cultural Heritage 'Pouch for the Sutra Embroidered with a Sun and Moon Design'. Through Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy results, it was estimated that silver (Ag) and sulfur (S) were present in the metal foil, and silver leaf was also attached to the medium. S may discolor Ag from yellow to black depending on its concsentration and contact time. Yellow color could not be identified in metal foil at present. But there existed an example of the preparation of a gold-colored flat silver thread; therefore, further research is needed to estimate the original color. The lamella was reddish brown on the back. Aluminum, silicon, and iron were also detected and were the main components found in red soil. This is believed to be the red adhesive in traditional flat gold thread and is considered to be an adhesive-related component of the metal foil. From the gas chromatography mass spectrometry results, the adhesive component was confirmed to be animal glue.

Material composition and change of baekdong alloy in the late Joseon period (조선후기 백동의 재료 구성과 변화)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the historical flow of baekdong alloy's usage according to the alloying materials mentioned in document records. For this purpose, we first overviewed the use of copper as a base material for white copper alloys and other types of copper alloys. Baekdong is an alloy of copper and other metals and is currently defined as an alloy of copper and nickel. However, depending on the research subjects and time of the scholars, baekdong may be defined as a metal with over a certain percentage of tin added to copper, or as an alloy of tin, zinc, and lead with copper. There is disagreement regarding the interpretation of this term. Baekdong, which started to appear in the literature of the Three Kingdoms Period, has been steadily seen through the Goryeo and Chosun Dynasties to the modern period. It has been used in various ways, according to each age and culture, from the symbol of the office to trading goods, daily life goods, and money. In the literature, baekdong's alloying material is not only copper and nickel, which are currently defined as alloys, but it is the same in that copper is used as the base metal of the alloy, although it varies slightly from generation to generation. In addition to copper, tin, zeolite, and emerald, zinc and lead also appeared. It was found that baekdong, which means alloy, and baekdong, which means white metal, were mixed. Nickel, which is the alloy material of baekdong as it is currently defined, is a metal with a relatively high discovery time and is widely used as a material for modern industrial fields. Nickel was introduced into Korea at the end of the Joseon Dynasty, but its use is not known in detail. In this study, we examined the acceptance and use of nickel-based baekdong in articles of modern newspapers and in statistical data. Based on the experience of craftsmen, we estimated the period when nickel-based alloys were used in crafts. Material is a direct factor in the development and deterioration of technology, and the development of technology is the basis for the changing of civilizations and cultures. In this context, this study was to investigate baekdong with the material of alloys as a starting point.

A study on the tourism folklore development in choongnam province (충남지역의 관광민예품 개발에 관한 연구 -섬유 및 금속공예를 중심으로-)

  • Recently the tourism industry has achieved rapid growth and thus stands out as a means for the improvement of international payments and the acquirement of foreign currency. In particular, the hotel and major tourist travel industries have been developed for the inducement of foreign tourists. However, the manu-facturing and sales indust\ulcornerries of tourism folklore haven't developed. The reason is that the endeavor to attract tourists has been more emphasized than the development of tourism folklore which includes chief shopping items and indust-rialization. Tourism folklore plays a great role not only as material evidence of a tourist's visit to a country or region but also as a gift and a souvenir. Also it represents the image and the degree of the industrial development of the nation, so it should be congruent with the nature and the images of the region. Nevertheless, our tourism folklore has been merely mass produced by specific companies that do not represent the region's image and nature in their products. Tourism folklore development can raise the image of Choongnam and serve as a catalyst to induce tourists. Also, it can be an avenue for com$$\mu$ity publicity and industrialization. Thus, this study has examined and analyzed original products made with textiles and metal materials whether can be developed into tourism folklore. Also this study presents the example of developed tourism folklore works in a foreign country. It tries to give the unique symbolic image of Choongnam by developing the original products with Choongnam' s own materials. However, this study has shown that the actual conditions of tourism folklore development in Choongnam are seriously inferior to other industries. The producers are limited. Moreover, the product items are coarse. Many problems are being brought up which should be improved. Hereafter, to develop Choongnam's own tourism folklore, it should be carried out with financial and political support from the government, design development by industrial circles, professional design training and marketing research by the sellers.
