The evaluation of the system reliability is generally quite difficult and costly as the structure becomes large and complex, especially when it is subjected to multiple time varying loads, and for redundant structures which have many possible modes of failur, e.g., system collapse through the formation of plastic hinge mechanisms. In reality most loadings acting on the structures are random in intensity as well as in occurrence time and duration. To include the load variability in time, the loads are described in terms of stochastic processes. Based on a tri-modal upper bound, a point estimate for the system reliability has been developed for more accuracy without extensive computational effort. This tri-modal point estimate also ensures the continuity of the system reliability function, which is a necessary condition in many nonlinear programming techniques. In addition, the Load Coincidence method, by which the combined effect of time varying loads are taken into account, has been modified to suitable for cases with an always-on load.

This paper presents the approximate analysis method for the symmetric transmission line crossing the aperture in an backplane. The method of moments is used to determine the aperture impedance for the construction of the equivalent transmission line that the aperture impedance apply to the transmission line as the shunt impedance. As the results, the insertion loss increases at the specific frequency range for the impedance matching. In the case of the mismatching, we are confirmed to the insertion gain at the specific frequency. Also the horizontal length of the aperture affects to the transmission line better than vertical length. The measurement of the insertion loss is performed to verify the theoretical analysis.
Sequential pattern mining is an important data mining task with broad applications. However, conventional methods may meet inherent difficulties in mining databases with long sequences and noise. They may generate a huge number of short and trivial patterns but fail to find interesting patterns shared by many sequences. In this paper, to overcome these problems, we propose the theme of approximate sequential pattern mining roughly defined as identifying patterns approximately shared by many sequences. The proposed method works in two steps: one is to cluster target sequences by their similarities and the other is to find consensus patterns that ire similar to the sequences in each cluster directly through multiple alignment. For this purpose, a novel structure called weighted sequence is presented to compress the alignment result, and the longest consensus pattern that represents each cluster is generated from its weighted sequence. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by a set of experiments.
Pin-on-disk test is a suggested abrasion testing method by ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials). This briefly illustrated the Archimedean spiral motion of a pin type specimen on a disk. To apply this method to rock cutting tools, a constant linear velocity (CLV) is precisely maintained during the test. We defined the two velocity vectors (RPM and horizontal speed) which connected to the resultatnt velocity. We derived a differential equations for the two parameters under CLV condition. It was difficult to find a exact solution. Previous literatures had been reviewed, and an approximate solution was investigated. We mathematically simulated the result for a certain parameter, and examine the accuracy of the solution.

In this study, we investigate the accuracy of higher order derivatives in the moving least square (MLS) difference method. An interpolation function is constructed by employing a Taylor series expansion via MLS approximation. The function is then applied to the mixed variational theorem in which the displacement and stress resultants are treated as independent variables. The higher order derivatives are evaluated by solving simply supported beams and cantilevers. The results are compared with the analytical solutions in terms of the order of polynomials, support size of the weighting function, and number of nodes. The accuracy of the higher order derivatives improves with the employment of the mean value theorem, especially for very high-order derivatives (e.g., above fourth-order derivatives), which are important in a classical asymptotic analysis.

In this paper, a method to approximate a multi-layer Green's function is proposed based on a FDTD scheme and a rational function approximation. For a given horizontal propagation wavenumber, time domain response is calculated and then Fourier transformed to the spectral domain Green's function. Using the rational function approximation, the pole and residue of the Green's function can be estimated, which are crucial for a calculation of a path loss. The proposed method can provide a wideband Green's function, while the conventional normal mode method can be applied to a single frequency problem. To validate the proposed method, We consider two problems, one of which has a analytical solution. The other is about multi-layer case, for which the proposed method is compared with the known normal mode solution, Kraken.

In this study, a simplified design procedure for friction dampers of a multi-story structure in order to reduce seismic response is proposed. To get insight for control effect of the structure with friction dampers is difficult, because of a nonlinear characteristic by a friction damper. Since a control force of a friction damper is influenced by coupling velocity between floors, adjoining modes are coupled. Thus structural response are derived by assuming steady-state response in resonance. As it is impossible that an exact solution is obtained for seismic load, first, a closed form solution can be achieved under harmonic vibration. Second, to convert a three-story building into a single-degree-of-freedom(SDOF) structure, modal analysis is performed. Third, an equivalent damping ratio is derived with utilizing closed form solution. And response reducing factor is proposed by it. Finally, friction force of a damper is designed for using response reducing factor, and then designed dampers are verified for seven seismic data. The nonlinear analysis results confirm the validity of the proposed procedure.
We consider an $M/E_n/1$ queueing model where customers arrive at a facility with a single server according to a Poisson process with customer service times assumed to be independent and identically distributed with Erlang distribution. We concentrate on the overshoot of the workload process in the queue. The overshoot means the excess over a threshold at the moment where the workload process exceeds the threshold. The approximation of the distribution of the overshoot was proposed by Bae et al. (2011); however, but the accuracy of the approximation was unsatisfactory. We derive an advanced approximation using the property of the Erlang distribution. Finally the newly proposed approximation is compared with the results of the previous study.
A hierarchical representation scheme for planar curves, MBO-tree, is proposed in this paper, which provides natural approximation and efficient localization. MBO-tree is based on the Douglas-Peucker algorithm (iterative end-point fit algorithm), but approximation errors that are stored with corresponding points in MBO-tree nodes and are used for abstraction measures are adjusted by force to eliminate unnatural approximation. The error adjusting is just making the approximation error of a node in a MBO-tree to be less than or equal to that of its parent. In point of localization, the bounding area of a curve is represented with a minimum bounding octangle (MBO), which can enclose the curve more compactly compared with those of other hierarchical schemes, such as the strip tree, the arc tree and the HAL tree. The MBO satisfies the hierarchical inclusion property that is useful for hierarchical geometrical operations, such as the point-inclusion test and the polygon intersection test. Through several experiments, we found that the proposed scheme was able to approximate more naturally and to localize more effectively.
In this paper we propose a hierarchical classification algorithm based on rough membership function which can reason a new object approximately. We use the fuzzy reasoning method that substitutes fuzzy membership value for linguistic uncertainty and reason approximately based on the composition of membership values of conditional sttributes Here we use the rough membership function instead of the fuzzy membership function It can reduce the process that the fuzzy algorithm using fuzzy membership function produces fuzzy rules In addition, we transform the information system to the understandable minimal decision information system In order to do we, study the discretization of continuous valued attributes and propose the discretization algorithm based on the rough membership function and the entropy of the information theory The test shows a good partition that produce the smaller decision system We experimented the IRIS data etc. using our proposed algorithm The experimental results with IRIS data shows 96%~98% rate of classification.
