  • In order to find out the load bearing behavior of sand and clay which sustain three types of shallow footing, finite element analyses were performed. Failure zone of sand which sustain strip footing was affected by relative density of sand whereas, failure zone of clay was not affected by soil strength and it was similar to the failure zone which is considered in theory. Considering the shape of load-settlement curves obtained by numerical analyses, punching shear failure can be seen in loose sand and ultimate bearing load can not be seen in dense sand whereas, yielding point can be seen in clay. Ultimate bearing loads for sand predicted by theory were greater than those obtained by numerical analyses and ultimate bearing loads for clay predicted by theory were similar to those of numerical analyses. Ultimate bearing loads determined by 1 inch settlement criteria were slightly less than those of numerical analyses.

  • Numerical studies on bearing capacity problems of layered clay are performed for smooth and rough strip footings. The finite element method and finite difference method (FLAC) are used for computations of the bearing capacity, entire load-displacement curve and the failure mechanism. The presented results show that it is possible to analyze the bearing capacity of layered clay and to give a progressive failure mechanism clearly. To obtain high quality solutions, it is necessary to review the results on control parameters(e.g., yield function, number of calculation) and compare the results by two numerical methods.

  • Ultimate load factors of PPWS(Prefabricated Parallel Wire Strand) sockets in main cables of suspension bridges are studied with respect to the tapered angles of the inner surface of sockets. After briefly reviewing the current design method, 15 numbers of finite element models of sockets are prepared by varying the number of wires in a strand and the tapered angles. The finite element models are updated by comparing experimental and numerical results, so that the models can reflect the real behavior of sockets. The stress distributions at the first yielding and ultimate states are analyzed by performing the incremental load analysis using ABAQUS. It is concluded that the optimized tapered angle of sockets should be determined at the specific angle between the results of verification equations of the required bonding length and stress resistance length.

  • This study presents the development of a new closed-form analytical solution for the ultimate bearing capacity of an embedded wall in a granular mass. The closed-form analytical solution consists of upper and lower bound solutions (UB and LB). The calculated values from these bound solutions were compared with the author's two-dimensional laboratory wall model loading test and finite element analysis in the plastic region. The comparison showed that ultimate bearing loads from both the model test and finite element analysis are located between UB and LB. In particular, the ultimate bearing load from LB showed good agreement with the ultimate bearing load values from both the model test and finite element analysis. However, the calculated value from the conventional empirical form subjected to plane-strain conditions was shown to be much smaller than the LB.

  • In the horizontally curved bridges, girders are subjected to the combined action of vertical bending and torsion due to their curvatures without any eccentric loads. As subjected to bending and torsion, the ultimate strength of steel/concrete composite box girders are limited by the diagonal tensile stress in the deck concrete induced by the St. Venant torsion. To determine the ultimate strength of composite box girders in bending and torsion and their interactions, this study conducted a 3-dimensional FEA and classical strength of materials investigation. Using ABAQUS, the FEA fully utilized advanced nonlinear analysis techniques simulating material/geometrical nonlinearity and post-cracking behaviors. The ultimate strength from numerical data were compared with theoretically derived values. Concurrent compressive stresses in the concrete deck improve the shear-resisting capacity of concrete, thereby resulting in an increased torsional resistance of the composite box girder in positive bending. The proposed interaction equation is very simple yet it provides a rational lower bound in determining the ultimate strength of concrete/steel composite box girders.

  • This paper introduces a numerical analysis model capable of evaluating CFT (Concrete-Filled Tube) columns across all time stages, incorporating creep behavior analysis and inelastic analysis to account for time-dependent behavior. The proposed model is compared with experimental results, revealing that the numerical model presented in this paper demonstrates more accurate trends than existing design criteria. Following verification, a numerical analysis is conducted for each slenderness ratio, determining the ultimate load capacity and examining the short-term and long-term sustained load behavior of the overall CFT column members.

  • The study examines the limit strength for steel cable-stayed bridges. A case studies have been performed in order to evaluate the limit strength lot steel cable-stayed bridges using nonlinear inelastic analysis approach and bifurcation point instability analysis approach, effective tangent modulus $(E_f)$ method. To realize it, a practical nonlinear inelastic analysis condoling the initial shape is developed. In the initial shape analysis, updated structural configuration is introduced instead of initial member forces for beam-column members at every iterative step. Geometric and material nonlinearities of beam-column members are accounted by using stability function, and by using CRC tangent modulus and parabolic function, respectively Besides, geometric nonlinearity of cable members is accounted by using secant value of equivalent modulus of elasticity. The load-displacement relationships obtained by the proposed method are compared well with those given by other approaches. The limit strengths evaluated by the proposed nonlinear inelastic analysis for the proposed cable-stayed bridges with tee dimensional configuration compared with those by the inelastic bifurcation point instability analyses.
