Many construction projects adopt grouting technology to prevent the leakage of groundwater or to improve the shear strength of the ground. Recognition as a feasible field procedure dates back to 1925. Since then, developments and field use have increased rapidly. According to improvement of grout materials, theoretical study on grout penetration characteristics is demanded. Fluid of grout always tends to flow from higher hydraulic potential to lower one and the motion of grout is also a function of formation permeability. Viscosity of pout is changed by chemical action while grout moves through pores. Due to the increment of viscosity, permeability is decreased. Permeability is also reduced by grout particle deposits to the soil aggregates. In this paper, characteristics of new cement grout material that has been developed recently are studied: injectable volume of new grout material is tested in two different grain sizes of sands; and the method to calculate injectable volume of grout Is suggested with consideration of change in viscosity and clogging phenomena. The calculated values are compared with injection test results. Viscosity of new grout material is found to increase as an exponential function of time. And lumped parameter $\delta$ of new grout material to be used for assessing deposition characteristics is estimated by comparing deposit theory with injection test results considering different soil types and different injection pressures. Injection test results show that grout penetration rate is decreased by the increase of grout viscosity and clogging phenomena.

A suitability of a thixotropic grout developed in this study has been examined through laboratory tests on strength, segregation, and viscosity. The thixotropic grout is a mixture of two types of liquid components. The A-liquid component consists of cement, water, and MG-A and the B-liquid component consists of scarlet, water, and MG-B. Unconfined compressive strength of specimens prepared with a prefer mix-proportion satisfied a design criteria for the backfilling of tail voids. A material segregation phenomenon under water condition was not observed in the thixotropic grout whereas it was observed in the existing silica-type grout. In addition, viscosity tests have been rallied out on the thixotropic grout to verify the capability of a long-distance delivery in the field. Both the A-liquid component and the B-liquid component maintained a viscosity of below 2,000 cP for 120 minutes. This experimental result confirms that two liquid components guarantees a long-distance delivery in tile field application.
A geothermal heat pump system is a preferable alternative energy system in Korea because it uses the heat energy of the earth, which is environmentally friendly and inexhaustible. In order to characterize the thermal conductivity and viscosity of grout materials used for backfilling ground heat exchangers, nine bentonite grouts, one marine clay from Boryung, and cement grouts adapted in the United State have been considered in this study. The bentonite grouts indicate that the thermal conductivity and viscosity increase with the content of bentonite or filler (silica sand). In addition, material segregation can be observed when the viscosity of grout is relatively low. The marine clay turns out to be unsuitable for backfilling the ground heat exchanger due to its insufficient swelling potential. The saturated cement grouts appear to possess much higher thermal conductivity than the saturated bentonite grouts, and the reduction of thermal conductivity in the cement grouts after drying specimens is less than that in the case of the bentonite grouts. Maintaining the moisture content of grouts is a crucial factor in enhancing the efficiency of ground heat exchangers.
Generally, OPC(ordinary portland cement) is used for grouting in Korea, and bentonite has usually been added to prevent the deposition of cement particles. The dispersion of CB(cement bentonite) grout is influenced by variable factors i.e. water to cement ratio, particle size of cement, kind of bentonite, adding volume, method of adding, viscosity of CB grout materials and curdling time. Among variable factors, the viscosity of CB grout materials is influenced by the dispersion, and dispersion is improved as the speed of grout mixer increase. In this paper, the specification of construction was derived by estimating physical characteristics of CB grout materials and confirming the sate of dispersion. The results show that the engineering characteristics of CB grout materials vary with the water to cement ratio and the mixing speed.

In a ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system, a vertical ground heat exchanger (GHE) is widely accepted due to a higher thermal performance. In the vertical GHE, grout (also called grouting material) plays an important role in the heat transfer performance and the initial installation cost of the GHE. Bentonite-based grout has been used in practice because of its high swelling potential and low hydraulic conductivity. This study evaluated the thermo-physical properties of the bentonite-based grouts through lab-scale measurements. In addition, we conducted performance simulation to analyze the effect of mixed ratio of grouts on the design length and thermal performance of the vertical GHE. The simulation results show that thermally-enhanced grouts improve the heat transfer performance of the vertical GHE and thus reduce the design length of GHE pipe.
Although anti-washout grouts are used extensively in underwater targets, major constraints continue to be associated with their use. These include poor bonding strength, poor pumpability, and loss of high strength in everyday engineering applications. In this study, based on the literature pertaining to self-compacted, non-dispersive, anti-washout grouts, a review of research trends in anti-washout grouts for underwater construction and sealing of karst cavities was carried out in order to determine the problems faced in this field. Grouts used under water suffer a loss of strength and bonding strength in comparison to grouts cast in air. Researchers are designing high-viscosity grouts to overcome the inrush of water and seal karst cavities; however, in doing so, they have inadvertently caused serious problems pertaining to the pumpability of these grouts and concretes in deep target locations. Thus, the majority of the anti-washout grouts and concretes that have been developed are not applicable to deep target environments, instead being suitable for only near-surface targets.

This study was conducted as part of research and development of high-strength grout. Accordingly, dolomite aggregate was used as a filler incorporated into the high-strength grout. Dolomite aggregate has a disadvantage of increasing the viscosity of the grout due to higher generation of fine powder than other aggregates. Accordingly, in this experiment, it was confirmed that the viscosity, flow time, and flow of high-strength grout change according to the volume composition ratio of dolomite aggregate and cement-based material. All experiments were conducted based on the Korean Industrial Standard KS F 4044, and the mixing factor was applied according to the composition ratio of the binder and the filler. In the experiment, the amount of fine powder contained in the dolomite aggregate rather than the silica sand used in the past is grasped, and after mixing with the grout accordingly, the mixture is proceeded to measure the viscosity in an unhardened state. In addition, the flow and flow time of the grout are evaluated according to the viscosity. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the viscosity and flow time decreased and the flow increased as the volume composition ratio of the dolomite aggregate to the cement-based material increased.
In order to analyze the shear strength characteristics of the grout with sudden gelation in the pre-hardening state, the viscosity of the mixture and the indoor vane shear test were performed. The grout was prepared according to the water-cement (w/c) ratio and the shear strength test was conducted. The plastic-state shear strength of grout was affected by the w/c ratio, so the lower the w/c ratio, the higher the initial shear strength was, and the longer the curing time was, the higher the shear strength was. The maximum shear strength occurred at the faster rotation angle as the higher shear strength was developed, and the lower shear strength occurred at the larger rotation angle. In addition, it was confirmed that the pre-hardening grout rapidly decreased in strength after the maximum shear strength was gained, and converged at a certain level after the rotation angle of the vane blade was about 70° to 90°.
This study presented the characteristics and additive effects of the grout with mixing ratio for developing of high-efficiency grouting technology under high depth conditions. The laboratory investigation were conducted with Portland cement (OPC) and micro cement (S8000-E) including viscosity experiments, particle size analysis experiments, Gel-Time experiments and uniaxial compressive strength experiments. As a result of the viscosity experiment, it was shown that OPC is advantageous in terms of viscosity, but S8000-E is suitable when considering the passage of rock joint intervals through particle size analysis. The Gel-Time experiment shows that it is not that difficult with injection as a grout material even when silica fume (SF) was applied. The strength of the cured material is improved as increase in the content of silica fium (SF). Within the range of the study, the optimal mixing ratio obtained through various experiments is S8000-E, w/c=70%, silica fium (SF)=6%, and 7 days.
In this study, the thermal conductive characteristics and basic properties of the nine commercial products of bentonite grouts were studied. Six of the nine products for ground heat exchanger systems are imported and others for civil engineering are domestic. The thermal conductivities of all bentonite products are nearly similar among products. The free swell indexes, viscosities and filter losses of the ground heat exchanger grouts are lower than those of the civil engineering ones. These characteristics seem to increase of the fluidity to fill the bentonite slurry to bore-hall perfectly, rather than to prevent underground water penetration. Thus, the mixtures of bentonites and sands are recommended for high thermal conduction grouts.
