  • In this study, behavior of unpatched and patched cylindrical shells with through-wall cracks has been estimated using numerical experiments, and patching effect of them has been investigated according to various patching parameters. To show credibility of numerical models considered, two ways such as h- and p-methods have been adopted. Also, domain integral method and virtual crack extension method have been considered to calculate energy release rates based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. For examples, the unpatched cylindrical shells with circumferential cracks under remote tension have firstly been analyzed to show the validity of finite element modeling with h-method or p-method, and then the results have been compared with literature values published. Next, the sensitive analysis of patch repaired problems in terms of thickness of patch and adhesive, shear modulus of adhesive, composite material type of patch, crack length, etc. has been carried out.

  • Intergenerational relations in Korea show very unique characteristics. In political arena, young and old generations clash each other intensely, while they maintain a high level of intergenerational solidarity in policy realm. A logistic regression analysis reveals that generational cleavage plays a key role in affecting voting decision and evaluation of governmental performance. It also suggests that in policy realm, normative, functional, and affectional types of solidarity influence people's attitudes on social policies very strongly. If the current government continues to neglect its promises for expanding welfare, the dual structure of generational cleavage in political arena and intergenerational solidarity in social policy realm can soon be turned into a conflictual structure. Therefore, an active initiative to increase intergenerational justice should be taken in order to attain a long-term, sustainable intergenerational solidarity and coexistence.

  • Powder metallurgy nickel based superalloy has been used in a high temperature part of turbine engine for airplane. The fatigue crack growth behavior was investigated using CT specimens for the materials at room temperature(R.T.), $600^{\circ}C$ and $700^{\circ}C$. The direct current potential drop(DCPD) method suggested by ASTM E647 was used to measure the crack length during fatigue crack growth at various stress ratios. The fatigue crack growth rate at R=0.5 was faster than that at R=0.1 for all temperature conditions and increased with the increase of stress ratio and temperature. Fractography was conducted for analysis of fracture mechanism.

  • Deterioration of reinforced concrete structures in corrosive environment is tend to be accelerated due to ingress of aggressive ion such as chloride ion. Chloride-induced corrosion is affected by various factors such as cover concrete qualities, width of existing cracks, and cover depth of concrete. However, the allowable crack width of RC structure in design code does not consider the concrete material properties and conditions of construction except the cover depth. In this paper, an equation for allowable crack width is proposed to consider the cover concrete quality, crack width, and cover depth. Crack width, cover depth, and water-cement ratio of concrete are selected as influencing factors on corrosion of reinforcement for rapid chloride tests. From test results, the relationships between the factors and corrosion are derived. Finally, the equation for allowable crack width is derived in terms of concrete compressive strength and cover depth. The presented equation is verified by comparative calculations with design code variables.

  • In this research, crack propagation in a silicon anode during two-phase lithiation was evaluated using a cohesive zone model. The phase transition from crystalline silicon to lithiated silicon causes compressive yielding due to the high volume expansion rate. Li-ion diffuses from the surface of the silicon to its core, and the complex deformation mechanisms during lithiation cause tensile hoop stress along the surface. The Park-Paulino-Roesler (PPR) potential-based cohesive zone model that guarantees consistent energy dissipation in mixed-mode fracture was adopted to simulate edge crack propagation. It was confirmed that the edge crack propagation characteristics during lithiation from the FEM simulation results coincided with the real experimental results. Crack turning observed from real experiments could also be predicted by evaluating the angles of maximum tensile stress directions.

  • This paper presents the experimental results concentrically reinforced concrete tension members and compares cracking behavior of amorphous steel fiber and normal steel fiber reinforced concrete members. Two kind of steel fibers were included as a major experimental parameter together with the six cover thickness to bar diameter ratio ($c/d_b$). The presence of amorphous steel fibers effectively controlled the splitting cracks initation and propagation. In the amorphous steel fiber reinforced specimens, no splitting cracks were observed that becomes higher with cover thickness to bar diameter ratio is 2.0. Crack spacing of the each specimens reinforced with amorphous steel fibers and normal steel fibers becomes larger with the increase in cover thickness, and also measured maximum and average crack spacing are significantly smaller than current design code provision. Based on the measured crack spacings, a relationships for predicting the crack spacing is proposed using the measured average crack spacing in amorphous steel fiber reinforced concrete tension members.

  • While various automatic rock fracture survey methods have been researched, the evaluation of the accuracy of these methods raises issues due to the absence of a metric which fully expresses the similarity between automatic and manual fracture maps. Therefore, this paper proposes a geometry similarity metric which is especially designed to determine the overall similarity of fracture maps and to evaluate the accuracy of rock fracture survey methods by a single number. The proposed metric, Scanline Intersection Similarity (SIS), is derived by conducting a large number of scanline surveys upon two fracture maps using Python code. By comparing the frequency of intersections over a large number of scanlines, SIS is able to express the overall similarity between two fracture maps. The proposed metric was compared with Intersection Over Union (IoU) which is a widely used evaluation metric in computer vision. Results showed that IoU is inappropriate for evaluating the geometry similarity of fracture maps because it is overly sensitive to minor geometry differences of thin elongated objects. The proposed metric, on the other hand, reflected macro-geometry differences rather than micro-geometry differences, showing good agreement with human perception. The metric was further applied to evaluate the accuracy of a deep learning-based automatic fracture surveying method which resulted as 0.674 (SIS). However, the proposed metric is currently limited to 2D fracture maps and requires comparison with rock joint parameters such as RQD.

  • The steel design based on the width of transverse crack which is the major factor to affect a long-term performance of continuously reinforced concrete pavement was developed. For this study, twenty-one cities of Texas were selected and the temperature data was collected at those locations during the past ten years. From the data, zero-stress temperatures were calculated by the PavePro program and the widths of transverse crack were analyzed by the CRCP program. The variables used to this numerical analysis were slab thickness, coefficient of thermal expansion of concrete, steel ratio, and design temperature. The total of 448 factorial runs were made and the regression analysis was performed using the results. Steel ratios from the regression equations were backcalculated and a steel design table was proposed.

  • In this study, wedge splitting tests were performed to evaluate fracture behavior of particle reinforced composite materials. Crack resistance was evaluated by using CTOD (crack tip opening displacement) and crack tip opening angle (CTOA). The particle reinforced composites were tested under various temperature ($-60^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$) and load speed (5~500mm/min). Also, digital image correlation method (DIC) was used to analyze the strain field at crack tip. Test results showed that the fracture energy increased with decreasing temperature and crack resistance increased with increasing load velocity.

  • As old concrete pavements of over 20years in age are increasing in expressways, the repair and rehabilitation of concrete pavement have become an important issue. Although asphalt overlay is widely used as an alternative to rehabilitate the old concrete pavement, problems due to infiltrated water such as reflection crack and pothole are imposing a very serious threat to its performance. This study proposes waterproof membrane as a solution to minimize the damage due to reflection crack and infiltrated water, and accelerated pavement testing was carried out for the performance comparison of composite pavement with waterproof membrane and ordinary tack coating. The experiment used water spraying to simulate rainfall, and the behavior and moisture resistance characteristics of overlay pavement were analyzed. The experimental result indicated that the strain pattern of waterproof membrane section differed from ordinary tack coating section because waterproof membrane caused the asphalt pavement and concrete pavement to move together. Additionally, since waterproof membrane minimized the infiltration of water and delayed the occurrence of reflection crack by about 70% in comparison to ordinary tack coating method. Moreover, the damage due to infiltrated water also decreased.
