  • Under excessive plasticity, the fracture toughness of a material depends on its size and geometry. Under fully yielded conditions, the stresses in a material near its crack tip are not unique but rather depend on the geometry. Therefore, the single-parameter J-approach is limited to a high-constraint crack geometry. The JQ theory has been proposed for establishing the crack geometry constraints. This approach assumes that the crack-tip fields have two degrees of freedom. In this study, the crack-tip stress field of a fully circumferential surface-cracked pipe under combined loads is investigated on the basis of the JQ theory by using finite element analysis. The combined loads are a tensile axial force and the thermal gradient in the radial direction. Q-stresses of the crack geometry and its loading state are used to determine the constraint effects. The constraint effects of secondary loading are found to be greater than those of primary loading. Therefore, thermal shock is believed to be the most severe loading condition of constraint effects.

  • Inner shell material of LNG storage tanks that store ultra-low temperature LNG at -162℃ requires structural integrity assessment of a crack-like defect. From the viewpoint of conventional fracture mechanics, the assessment has mainly performed by single parameter using stress intensity factor K, J-integral and CTOD. However, the stresses in a material of crack tip are not unique caused by constraint loss due to size and geometry of the structure. Various attempts have been made to complement a single parameter fracture mechanics, typically with Q-stress. In this paper, we have performed a two-parameter approach by deriving the Q-stress coupling with J-integral suitable for the evaluation of the crack tip stress field in the non-linear elastic region. A quantitative evaluation of the constraint effect has performed by using the J-Q approach. It was evaluated that the SENB type specimen had a crack ratio of 0.1 to 0.7 and the wide type specimen had a crack ratio of 0.2 to 0.6.

Experimental Behaviors of the Constraint Effects A2 Depending on Displacement at Various Measuring Positions near Crack Front for STS 316L CT Specimen (균열선단 변위측정위치에 따른 STS 316L의 구속효과 A2 거동)

  • The magnitude of constraint effect $A_2$ values on the non-linear elastic plastic fracture toughness was experimentally estimated by using displacement at various measuring positions near crack tip. Constraint effect $A_2$ value was dependent on specimen configuration and on the measured displacement near crack front. The crack tip opening displacement in the vicinity of the crack tip front should be estimated within plastic region when appropriately constraint effect was calculated. It was found that the magnitude of constrain effect |$A_2$| is below 8.0 at the crack tip. But an appropriate location to measure the effective constraint effects $A_2$ at the critical value of J that crack initiation is characterizable by is r = 2mm and ${\theta}=90^{\circ}$ away from original crack tip, and the constraint effect |$A_2$| estimated is 5.3.

  • The constraint effect $A_2$ has to be evaluated within plastic region near crack tip front using opening displacement. Plastic boundary and stress or strain conditions in the vicinity of the crack tip using recrystallization heat treatment was represented. It was found that the plastic deformation boundary by recrystallization heat treatment method was the true strain of ${\epsilon}t$ = 0.05mm/mm. With the estimation of constraint effects $A_2$, the region of proper displacement measurement point near crack tip was between 0mm and 1mm distance toward direction of crack propagation, and was between 1mm to 3mm distance toward direction of load line.

  • 실제 작용하는 하중상태는 요소의 형상과 작용하중의 복잡성 때문에 혼합모드 하중상태를 나타낸다. 또한 혼합모드 피로균열은 전파과정 동안 부재의 구속형상이나 외부 작용하중의 급격한 변화에 의해서도 영향 받게 된다. 이로 인하여 피로균열은 균열선단에서 지속적이면서 급격한 응력 재분배의 상태를 경험한다. 그러므로 다양한 응력 재분배 상태에서의 혼합모드 피로균열에 대한 고찰이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 응력 재분배상태 하에서 나타나는 혼합모드 피로균열의 전파거동에 대한 특징이 실험적으로 고찰되었다.(중략)

  • The magnitude of constraint effect $A_{2}$ values were experimentally estimated using displacement according to measuring positions on the non-linear elastic plastic fracture toughness estimate. For 25.4 mm thickness SS400 steel CT specimen, constraint effect $A_{2}$ values we re dependent on specimen configuration and on measured displacement near crack front. Commonly, Estimating constraint effect $A_{2}$ measuring position for displacement should be existed inside plastic region. Therefore, the ${\delta}_{5}$ method was not reliable for evaluation of constraint effect $A_{2}$ values because measuring position for displacement is in elastic region at crack growth initiation in this paper.

  • This paper investigates the relationship between J-integral and crack tip opening displacement, ${\delta}_t$ using Gordens results of numerical analysis. Estimation were carried out for several strength levels such as ultimate, flow, yield, ultimate-flow, flow-yield stress to determine the influence of strain hardening and the ratio of crack length to width on the $J-{\delta}_t$ relationship.   • A new elastic-plastic-creep constraint parameter is proposed to quantify the effect of constraint on creep crack initiation times. It represents the difference between the transient elastic-plastic-creep crack-tip opening stress and the Riedel-Rice opening stress field in plane strain, which can be determined analytically. Application of the proposed parameter to a large set of creep crack growth test data using C(T) and SEN(B) specimens of Type 316H stainless steel at 550℃ shows that creep crack initiation times can be more accurately characterized by the C⁎-integral together with the proposed parameter.

  • The estimation of fracture toughness in inhomogeneous material is still insufficient because it is difficult to get information of fracture initiation at the crack tip. Therefore, martensite-ferrite dual phase steel was prepared for a model material and micro-fracture behavior was investigated in the region of pre-fatigue crack in order to understand the characteristic of fracture resistance in inhomogeneous materials. In the case of severely inhomogeneous state, micro-fracture appearance is not distributed homogenously so that the estimation of fracture toughness is hardly possible. On the other hand when the grain size is refined or the strength of martensite is lowered, micro-fracture appearance is distributed homogenously and fracture toughness remarkably increases.

The Relationship between Fracture Toughness and Constraint Effect using Crack Tip Opening Displacement (균열선단 개구변위를 이용한 파괴인성 평가와 구속효과와의 관계)

  • For the CT specimen of 25.4mm thickness SS400 steel, the fracture toughness and the magnitude of constraint effect, $A_2$ on the non-linear elastoplastic fracture behaviors were experimentally estimated by crack tip opening displacement. In order to estimate constraint effect, displacement measurement position near crack front should be the existed within plastic region. But it is found that the displacement measurement positions by the ${\delta}_5$ method are in elastic region at crack growth initiation. Hence the estimate of constraint effect, $A_2$ by the ${\delta}_5$ method was not reliable.
