  • A bar with periodically nonuniform material properties is selected as a one-dimensional model of a flat-panel speaker. This paper describes a theoretical approach to the bending waves propagating i n the nonuniform bar. The phase speed of the wave is obtained using perturbation techniques for small amplitude, sinusoidal modulation of the flexural rigidity and mass density. It is shown that the wave speed is decreased due to the nonuniformity of the material properties by the amount proportional to the square of the modulation amplitude. The resonance occurring when the wavelength is half of the period of the material properties is analyzed by the method of multiple scales. It is also shown that the wave speed at the resonance mode is decreased by the amount proportional to the modulation amplitude but the wave of this mode does not propagate far enough due to attenuation.

  • A time-frequency analysis method was developed to analyze the dispersive waves caused by impact loads in structural members such as beams and plates. Stress waves generated by ball drop and pencil lead break were recorded by ultrasonic transducers and acoustic emission (AE) sensors. Wavelet transform (WT) using Gabor function was employed to analyze the dispersive waves in the time-frequency domain, and then to find the arrival time of the waves as a function of frequency. The measured group velocities in the beam and the plate were compared with the predictions based on the Timoshenko beam theory and Rayleigh-Lamb frequency equations, respectively. The agreements were found to be very good.

  • A new technique for the source location of acoustic emission (AE) in plates whose thichness are close to or thinner than the wavelength has been studied by introducing wavelet transform de-noising technique. The detected AE signals were pre-processed using wavelet transform to be decomposed into the low-frequency, high-amplitude flexural components and the high-frequency, low-amplitude extensional components. If the wavelet transform de-noising was employed, we could successfully filter out the extensional wave component, one of the critical errors of source location in plates by arrival time difference method. The accuracy of source location appeared to be significantly improved and independent of the setting of gain and threshold, plate thickness, sensor-to-sensor distance, and the relative position of source to sensors. Since the method utilizes the flexural component of relatively high amplitude, it could be applied to very large, thin-walled structures in practice.

  • Propagating waves (flexural, longitudinal and shear waves) travelling with constant amplitudes and evanescent waves decaying exponentially are generated on a cylindrical shell. Evanescent waves are generally generated in the vicinity of an vibration excitation point and near ends of the shell. But the evanescent waves can generates strong axial vibration at the ends of the cylindrical shell. The strong end axial vibration due to those evanescent waves has been observed in an author's previous paper dealing with measurements of the in-plane axial vibration of a finite cylindrical shell. In this paper the strong end axial vibration due to the evanescent waves has been theoretically analyzed. In order to analyze the vibration of the cylindrical shell, wave propagation approach has been implemented. Comparison between theoretical and experimental results for the axial vibration of the shell showed that the strong evanescent wave can be generated due to mode conversion (conversion from flexural wave to evanescent wave) at the ends of cylindrical shell. It also showed that the evanescent wave can generate the strong axial vibration near the ends of the cylindrical shell and that it can have effect even on 1/3 of the total length of the shell.

  • An extensive research programme has been aimed at the effct of ship weight distribution on the ship responses applying ship hydroelasticity theory. In the previous works, consistent tendencies of the still-water and the wave bending moments. respectively, were found as the weight distribution was varied systematically. The paper is therefore concerned mainly with any correlation between still-water and wave bending moments with the variations of weight distribution. Although these bending moments share different features with each other, such a comparison of tendencies was plausible and informative. These and other matters for the future are discussed.

  • Engineering ceramics have superior heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. Consequently, these art significant candidates for hot-section structural components of heat engine and the inner containment of nuclear fusion reactor. Besides, some of them have the ability to heal cracks and great benefit can be anticipated with great benefit the structural engineering field. Especially, law fracture toughness of ceramics supplement with self-healing ability. In the present study, we have been noticed some practically important points for the healing behavior of silicon nitride, alumina, mullite with SiC particle and whisker. The presence of silicon carbide (SiC) in ceramic compound is very important for crack-healing behavior. However, self-healing of SiC has not been investigated well in detail yet. In this study, commercial SiC was selected as sample, which can be anticipated in the excellent crack healing ability. The specimens were produced three-point bending specimen with a critical semi-circular crack of which size that is about $50-700{\mu}m$. Three-point bending test and static fatigue test were performed cracked and healed SiC specimens. A monotonic bending load was applied to cracked specimens by three-point loading at different temperature. The purpose of this paper is to report Strength Properties and Elastic Waves Characteristics of Silicon Carbide with Crack Healing Ability.

  • We studied on the nondestructive evaluation of the elastic wave signals of locally wall thinned straight pipe. Wavelet transform was applied for the time-frequency analysis of waveforms obtained by fracture wave detector due to the dropping steel ball. The time-frequency analysis provides time variation of each frequency component involved in a waveform, which makes it possible to evaluate the shape of local wall thinning at each frequency. In this study, comparison by wavelet transform of the AE signals and monotonic bending tests without internal pressure are conducted on 1.91 inch diameter full-scale carbon steel pipe specimens. As the results of tests, fracture behaviors could be shown by the characteristic of mechanical strength of locally wall thinned pipes and the waveforms could be evaluated for the integrity insurance of the piping system according to the length and depth range of the deffeted shape pipes in the real field.

  • [ $Al_2O_3/SiC$ ]composite ceramics were sintered to evaluate the bending strength and elastic wave characteristics. The three-point bending test was carried out under room temperature. The elastic wave was detected by fracture wave detector. The crack healing behavior was investigated from 1373 K to 1723 K. The bending strength of $Al_2O_3/SiC$ composite by nanocomposite is higher than that of $Al_2O_3$ monolithic. Crack-healing behavior depended on an amount of additive powder $Y_2O_3$. In $Al_2O_3/SiC$ composite ceramics with 3 wt. % $Y_2O_3$ for additive powder, the bending strength at 1573 K is about 100% increase than that of the smooth specimens. From the result of wavelet analysis of elastic wave signal, the smooth specimen and heat treated specimen of $Al_2O_3$ monolithic and $Al_2O_3/SiC$ composite ceramics showed characteristics of frequency about 58 kHz. The strength of $Al_2O_3/SiC$ composite ceramics was a little higher than those of $Al_2O_3$ monolithic. The dominant frequencies were high with increasing of $Y_2O_3$ for additive powder. The dominant frequencies had direct connection with the bending strength.

  • Elastic dynamic responses analysis program for ship hulls considering slamming impact loads due to the voyage in large amplitude waves is developed. Ship hull structures are modeled by a thin-walled beam model in order to consider effects of shear deformation. The momentum slamming theory is used to derive nonlinear hydrodynamic forces considering intersection between wave particles and ship section. For the validation of the developed computer program, motions of a V-shaped simple section model and S-175 standard container model are calculated and analyzed. In each numerical example, time histories of relative displacement, velocity and vertical bending moment of a ship section are derived, considering the effect of slamming impacts in various wave conditions.ures near the free surface as well as the wake of the hydrofoil.
