The Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC), an electro-active polymer, has many advantages including bending actuation, low weight, low power consumption, and flexibility. These advantages coincide with the requirements of a bio-related application. Thus, IPMC is promising materials for bio-mimetic actuator and sensor applications. Before applying IPMC to actual application, basic mechanical properties of IPMC should be studied in order to utilize IPMC for practical uses. Therefore, IPMCs are fabricated to investigate the mechanical characteristics. Nafion is used as a base ionic polymer. Mason samples cast with various thicknesses are used to test the thickness effects of IPMC. Subsequently, IPMC is fabricated using the chemical reduction method. The deformation, blocking force and frequency response of the IPMC actuator are important properties. In this present study, the performances of the IPMC actuators, including the deformation, blocking force and natural frequency, are then obtained according to only the input voltage and IPMC dimensions. Finally, the empirical performance model and the equivalent stiffness model of the IPMC actuator are established using experiments results.

Surface residual stresses as well as wall thickness and ovality changes after U-bending process on UNS N06690 row-1 heat exchanger tubes, were estimated. Surface residual stresses were measured by Hole Drilling Method(HDM), calculating the stresses from relieved strains of 3 rosette strain gages. After bending of the tubes, dimensional tolerances for wall thickness and ovality were satisfied with ASTM requirements. Residual stresses at the extrados were introduced with compressive stress(-) by bending operations, and its maximum value reached-319 MPa in axial direction at ${\phi}=0^{\circ}$ in position. Tensile residual stresses(+) of ${\sigma}_zz=45$ MPa,${\sigma}_zz=25$ MPa were introduced in the intrados surface at position of ${\phi}=0^{\circ}$ Maximum tensile residual stress of 170 MPa was detected on the flank side at position of ,${\phi}=95^{\circ}$i.e., at apex region. It appeared that higher stress gradients were generated at the irregular transition regions. In the trend of residual stress changes with U-bend position, the extrados is related with the changes of ovality and the intrados is related with the changes of wall thickness.

Glass/resin/glass laminate structures are used in the automobile, biological, and display industries. The sandwich structures are used in the micro/nanoimprint process to fabricate a variety of functional components and devices in fields such as display, optics, MEMS, and bioindustry. In the process, micrometer- or nanometer-scale patterns are transferred onto the substrate using UV curing resins. The demodling process has an important impact on productivity. In this study, we investigated the fracture behavior of glass/resin/glass laminates fabricated via UV curing. We performed measurements of the adhesion force and the interfacial energy between the mold and resin materials using the four-point flexural test. The bending-test measurements and the load-displacement curves of the laminates indicate that the fracture behavior is influenced by the interfacial energy between the mold and resin and the resin thickness.

This paper discusses the analysis of the curl deformation behavior when a dynamic force is applied to a tearing tube installed on a flat die to predict the energy absorption capacity and deformation behavior. The deformation of the tips of the curling strips was obtained when the curl tips and tube body are in contact with each other, and a formula describing the energy dissipation rate caused by the deformation of the curl tips is proposed. To improve this formula, we focused on the variation of the curl radius and the reduced thickness of the tube. A formula describing the mean curl radius is proposed and verified using the curl radius measurement data of collision test specimens. These improved formulas are added to the theoretical model previously proposed by Huang et al. and verified from the collision test results of a tearing tube.

A systematic approach of the energy method is proposed for analysis of axisymmetric deep drawing in which the total deforming region is divided into five sections by the geometric characteristic. The corresponding solution is found through optimization of the total energy dissipation with respect to some parameters assumed in the kinematically admissible velocity field defined over each region. The sheet blank is divided into three-or five-layers to consider the bending effect. For the evaluation of frictional energy, it is assumed that the blank holding force acts on the outer rim of the flange and that the contact pressure acting on punch shoulder or die shoulder has uniform distributions, respectively. The computed results by the present method are compared with the experiment and the computed results by the elastic-plastic finite element method for the distribution of thickness strain and the relation between the punch stroke and punch load. The results for the case of multi-layers show better agreements than for the case of a single layer in load vs. stroke relation and strain distribution. It is thus shown that the multi-layer technique can be effectively employed in analyzing axisymmetric deep drawing in connection with the energy method.
The aeroelastic stability analysis of composite bearingless rotors is investigated using a large deflection beam theory in hover. The bearingless rotor configuration consists of a single flexbeam with a wrap-around type torque tube and the pitch links located at the leading edge and trailing edge of the torque tube. The outboard main blade, flexbeam and torque tube are all assumed to be an elastic beam undergoing flap bending, lead-lag bending, elastic twist and axial deflections, which are discretized into beam finite elements. For the analysis of composite bearingless rotors, flexbeam is assumed to be a rectangular section made of laminate. Two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory is used for aerodynamic computation. The finite element equations of motion for beams are obtained from Hamilton's principle. The p-k method is used to determine aeroelastic stability boundary. Numerical results are presented for selected bearingless rotor configurations based on the lay-up of laminae in the flexbeam and pitch links location. A systematic study is made to identify the importance of the stiffness coupling terms on aeroelastic stability for various fiber orientation and for different configuration.

Since concrete is an inhomogeneous material consisting of larger aggregates and sand embedded in a cement paste matrix, it relatively shows a complex failure mechanism. In order to assure the reliability of concrete structure. microscopic fracture behavior and internal damage progress of concrete under the loading should be fully understood. In this study, an acoustic emission(AE) technique has been used to clarify microscopic failure mechanism and their corresponding AE signal characteristics of concrete under three-point bending test. In addition 2-dimensional AE source location has been performed to monitor the progress of an internal damage and the successive crack growth behavior during the loading. The relationship between AE signal characteristics and microscopic fracture mechanism is discussed.

This work intends to establish the reliability and fracture toughness $K_{IC}$ criterion of welded joints by EGW for high strength EH36-TMCP ultra thick plate. For this, firstly thermo elasto-plastic analysis has been carried out on two pass X-groove butt joint model to clarify the thermal and mechanical behaviour(residual stress, plastic strain, magnitude of stress and their distribution and production mechanism). Moreover, to establish fracture criterion, analysis of fracture toughness $K_{IC}$ has been performed under the notch machined and residual stress with the load condition on EGW welded joints. A quantitative fracture criterion for EGW welded joints is suggested by using $K_{IC}$.
In this study, as a part of the basic study for the application of optical fiber sensors to smart composite structures, the integrity of optical fiber sensors embedded within the composite structures was examined and then the laser signal transmitted through optical fiber sensors during the deformation of host structures was investigated. Firstly, it was found that bending test could be substituted for tensile test by comparing cumulative failure distribution based on weakest link theory and introducing the correction factor. Weibull parameters were obtained through the experiments and the correction factor was found to be applied to cumulative failure distribution derived from bending test. The integrity of embedded optical fiber sensors due to the thermal effect was evaluated by the comparison of the mean tensile strengths of cured and uncured optical fibers. Secondly, relationships between stress-strain curve obtained in tensile test of composite laminate and the intensity of laser signal transmitted through embedded optical fibers were examined and the possibility of the effective damage detection using optical fiber sensors was studied.

The stress concentration of lock-claws, which are one of the important parts for pneumatic fitting for a flexible tube connection, was investigated by finite element simulation. In this study, the generation of the local plastic deformation was predicted when the tube was hooked up to a pneumatic fitting in order to disperse the stress concentration, and design optimization was carried out using the Taguchi method. For the optimization, the outer width, bending angle, and inner radius of the lock-claws are used as main variables. As a result, their respective contribution ratios are revealed as 81.3%, 10.9%, and 1.5%. The ratio of the total stress distribution was improved by 4% compared with the initial design of the lock-claws.
