This study performed a series of burst tests at ambient temperature using real-scale elbow specimen containing a local wall-thinning defect at it's intrados or extrados and evaluated failure pressure of locally wall-thinned elbows. In the experiment, a 90-degree 100A, Sch. 80 standard elbow was employed, and various wall-thinning geometries, such as length, depth, and circumferential angle, were considered. From the results of experiment, the dependences of failure pressure of wall-thinned elbows on the defect geometries and locations were investigated. In addition, the reliability of existing models was examined by comparing the tests data with the results predicted from existing failure pressure evaluation models for locally wall-thinned elbow.

Impedance based monitoring technique was investigated to evaluate the damage occurring in wind turbine blade. In this study, PVDF film piezo sensors were patched on the 10 kW wind turbine blade, and impedance was measured over the frequency range of 1~200 MHz under fatigue loading. With applying fatigue loads on the blade, change in maximum deflection of the blade and local strain values could be obtained from the strain gages attached on the blade, and difference of the impedance signatures was also observed. From these data, it could be found that local damage or geometrical change in the blade structure happened. To quantitatively compare the impedance signature patterns, a statistical algorithm, scalar damage metric M was used. It was calculated from the impedance signatures considering fatigue loads and location of the sensors. The metric values were compared to correlate the metrics with damage in the blade.

The objective of this paper is to present an algorithm to locate and size damage in a beam structure. The method uses the changes in the modal strain energy distribution. A damage index, utilized to identify possible location and corresponding severity of local damage, is formulated and expressed in terms of modal displacements that can be obtained from mode shapes of the undamaged and the damaged structures. The possible damage locations in the structure arc determined by the application of damage indicator according to previously developed decision rules. The robustness and effectiveness of the method arc demonstrated using numerical examples of beam structures with simulated damage.

This study was examined the tensile strength change of a circular tubular member with artificial sectional damage on its surface to consider surface sectional damage by corrosion. The tensile strength tests were conducted using circular tubular specimens with artificial sectional damage considering sectional damaged height and width on its surface according to the corrosion level. From the tensile strength test results, it is confirmed that tensile strength of the circular tubular specimens was affected by the damaged circumference (damaged width), not damaged length (damaged height) and their tensile failures were appeared at the minimum section of the artificial sectional damage part. Nonlinear finite-element analyses were conducted considering equivalent sectional damage effect on sectional damaged part in tensile specimens to examine the change in the tensile strength of tubular specimens with artificial sectional damage since it is difficult to estimate the sectional damaged surface condition of the specimens clearly. From the nonlinear finite element analysis results for the tensile test specimens, tensile strengths of test specimens with irregular sectional damaged surface were relatively evaluated to be highly decreased than these of FE analysis model with equivalent sectional damage. Therefore, residual tensile strengths of tensile members with irregular sectional damage as local corrosion can be evaluated and predicted using correlation coefficient between tensile test results and FE analysis results with equivalent sectional damage.

Pipeline structure is one of core underground infrastructure which transports primary sources. Since the almost pipeline structures are placed underground and connected each other complexly, it is difficult to monitor their structural health condition continuously. In order to overcome this limitation of recent monitoring technique, recently, a Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) system based on on-line and real-time monitoring system is being developed by the authors' research group. In this study, real-time pipeline health monitoring (PHM) methodology is presented based on electromechanical impedance methods using USN. Two types of damages including loosened bolts and notches are artificially inflicted on the pipeline structures, PZT and MFC sensors that have piezoelectric characteristics are employed to detect these damages. For objective evaluation of pipeline conditions, Damage metric such as Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) value was computed from the impedance signals to quantify the level of the damage. Optimal threshold levels for decision making are estimated by generalized extreme value(GEV) based statistical method. Throughout a series of experimental studies, it was reviewed the effectiveness and robustness of proposed PHM system.

The damage curves for the 2-story shear building to the impulsive rectangular loads were established with the peak load and Impulse ratio producing the critical displacement. The convolution integrations with the Impulse response matrix and the loads were used to find the responses of the building. The impulse response matrix required in the calculations of the convolution integration were found with the mode superposition method It is shown from the established damage curves that the responses of the top and bottom floor are sensitive to the magnitude and the impulse of the loads respectively.
