  • In order to extract more accurate skin parameters, this study was focused on the improvement of the efficiency of a previous inverse fitting algorithm based on genetic algorithms. The algorithm provides the best fitting result of the diffusion approximation model to a VRS (visual reflectance spectroscopy) curve of skin. Simplex and wavelength selection methods were applied to the previous algorithm. Nine skin parameters were inversely extracted from the modeling studies. The revised inverse fitting algorithm was determined to produce an 83% reduction of computation time and a 0.64% reduction of sum of square error, compared to the previous algorithm. In conclusion, we confirmed that the new algorithm provides faster and more accurate solutions for the diffusion approximation model.

  • This study describes an efficient and facile method for configuration optimum design of structures. One of the ways to achieve numerical shape representation and the selection of design variables is using the design element concept. Using this technique, the number of design variables could be drastically reduced. Isoparametric mapping was utilized to automatically generate the finite element mesh during the optimization process, and this made it possible to easily calculate the derivatives of the coordinates of generated finite element nodes w.r.t. the design variables. For the structural analysis, finite element analysis was adopted in the optimization procedure, and two different techniques(the deterministic method, a modified method of feasible direction; and the stochastic method, a genetic algorithms) were applied to obtain the minimum volumes and section areas for an efficient configuration optimization procedure. Futhermore, spline interpolation was introduced to present a realistic optimum configuration that meet the manufacturing requirements. According to the results of several numerical examples(steel structures), the two techniques suggested in this study simplified the process of configuration optimum design of structures, and yielded improved objective function values with a robust convergence rate. This study's applicability and capability have therefore been demonstrated.

  • We investigate the effect of the data skew of join attributes on the performance of a pipelined multi-way hash join method, and propose two new harsh join methods in the shared-nothing multiprocessor environment. The first proposed method allocates buckets statically by round-robin fashion, and the second one allocates buckets dynamically via a frequency distribution. Using harsh-based joins, multiple joins can be pipelined to that the early results from a join, before the whole join is completed, are sent to the next join processing without staying in disks. Shared nothing multiprocessor architecture is known to be more scalable to support very large databases. However, this hardware structure is very sensitive to the data skew. Unless the pipelining execution of multiple hash joins includes some dynamic load balancing mechanism, the skew effect can severely deteriorate the system performance. In this parer, we derive an execution model of the pipeline segment and a cost model, and develop a simulator for the study. As shown by our simulation with a wide range of parameters, join selectivities and sizes of relations deteriorate the system performance as the degree of data skew is larger. But the proposed method using a large number of buckets and a tuning technique can offer substantial robustness against a wide range of skew conditions.

  • Conventional truss optimization approaches, while often sophisticated and computationally intensive, have been applied to simple, minimum weight-cost models. These approaches do not perform well when applied to real-world trusses, which have costmodels that are complex and which often involve multiple objectives. Thus, this paper describes the optimization strategies that a clustering technique, which identifies members that are likely to have the same product type, uses for the optimal design of truss structures with real- world cost functions that consider the costs on the weight of the truss, the number of products in the design, the number of joints in the structures, and the costs required in the site.At first, the clustering technique is applied to identify the members and to generate a proper initial solution. A simple taboo search technique is then used, which attempts to generate the optimal solution by starting with the solution from the previous technique. For example, the proposed approach is a plied to a typical problem and to a problem similar to relative performances. The results show that this algorithm generates not only better-quality solutions but also more efficient ones

  • In this research, a multilevel decomposition technique to enhance the efficiency of the configuration optimization of truss structures was proposed. On the first level, the nonlinear programming problem was formulated considering cross-sectional areas as design variables, weight, or volume as objective function and behavior under multiloading condition as design constraint. Said nonlinear programming problem was transformed into a sequential linear programming problem. which was effective in calculation through the approximation of member forces using behavior space approach. Such approach has proven to be efficient in sensitivity analysis and different form existing shape optimization studies. The modified method of feasible direction (MMFD) was used for the optimization process. On the second level, by treating only shape design variables, the optimum problem was transformed into and unconstrained optimal design problem. A unidirectional search technique was used. As numerical examples, some truss structures were applied to illustrate the applicability. and validity of the formulated algorithm.

  • In design of tall buildings, the flows of stress and ultimate strength of structures cannot be obtained by the elastic analysis alone. The current inelastic analysis are very impractical for practical engineer due to the amount of work involved in engineering calculation. In this paper the PC-based inelastic analysis by the residual strength ratio concepts is introduced. The efficiency of inelastic analysis is evaluated by comparing the results of inelastic analysis with those of elastic analysis for the existing tall buidling located in Seoul. Some modification in terms of lateral resisting structural system is proposed to improve the system ductility.

  • As growing the number of Webs, the total amount of accessible information has been greater than ever. To storage and retrieve the vast information on the Webs effectively, many researchers have been made utilizing XML (extensible Markup Language). In this paper, we propose an effective method of representation and retrieval mechanism for the structured retrieval of the XML documents : (1) the fixed sized LETID (Leveled Element Type ID) that contains the information of elements such as parent node, sibling nodes, and identical sibling nodes, and the hierachical information of current node, and (2) content index, structure index, attribute index model, and the information retrieval algorithm for the structured information retrieval. With our methods, we can effectively represent the structured information of XML documents, and can directly access the specific elements by simple operations to process various queries.

  • An improved formulation for multi-objective optimization was proposed. This formulation was applied to steel seismic loads. The multi-objective optimization problem was formulated with minimum structural weight, maximum strstability. The global criterion method was employed to find a rational solution closest to the ideal solution for the optimization problem using standard steel profile, To efficiently solve the optimization problem, the decomposition meth both system-level and element-level was used. In addition, various techniques including efficient reanalysis technique intermediate variables and sensitivity analysis using an automatic differentiation(AD) were incorporated. Moreover the reamong section properties fitted to the section profile used in order to link the system level and the element level. From numerical investigation, it could be stated that the proposed method will lead to the more rational design compared with one.
