Claiming Global Responsibility for Distant Suffering in Media Discourse -Bosnia and Kosovo- (미국 엘리트 언론이 주장하는 전지구적 책임의 정치적 성격 -보스니아 내전과 코소보 분쟁-)

  • This paper explores the formation of global responsibility discourses in the elite US media used in promoting NATO's military interventions in the post-Cold War era. The case study of global responsibility discourses surrounding the Bosnian War (1992-1995) and the Kosovo Conflict (1998-1999) offers an account of the roles of the elite US media in foreign policy. The construction and articulation of global responsibility discourses in the elite US media were closely related to the US government's policy and were formed within the framework of US national interest and domestic responsibility. The cases of military intervention in the post-Cold War period imply that there were more fundamental structure and patterns by which the elite US media approached the 'humanitarian crises': 'benevolent domination' and the subsequent construction of a 'melodramatic national identity' in the war narratives. Presuming that the elite US media's discourse is a primary site for the public for experiencing and understanding distant suffering, this paper concludes that global responsibility discourses within the media may have dangerous ramifications for global democracy because the discourse of responsibility can potentially absorb the creative, progressive energies created by the public's awareness of responsibility on a global scale in order to reinforce the relations of domination.

An Analysis of the Concept on Mensuration by Parts and Definite Integral (구분구적법과 정적분의 개념 분석)

  • Understanding the concept of definite integral is based on understanding the concept of mensuration by parts. However, several previous studies pointed out the difficulty on teaching the concept of mensuration by parts. The paper provides some didactic strategies which help teaching the concept of mensuration by part. To teach the concept of definite integral, in the high school curriculum, the relation between definite integral and series is dealt with. However, the paper suggests that importing the concept of series is not indispensable to teach the concept of definite integral. It is proper that definite integral is taught as limit of particular sequence not series.

Stress Analysis of Helical Spring Using DQM (미분구적법을 이용한 핼리컬 스프링의 응력해석)

  • DQM(differential quadrature method) is applied to computation of two dimensional elasticity problems in helical spring. Elastic shear stresses in an axially loaded helical spring having rectangular and square cross sections are calculated. The results are compared with those obtained using the method of successive approximations. The differential quadrature method gives good accuracy even when only a limited number of grid points is used.

  • The vibration analysis of the circular arch as a member of a structure has been an important subject of mechanics due to its various applications to many industrial fields. In particular, circular arches with variable cross section are widely used to optimize the distribution of weight and strength and to satisfy special architectural and functional requirements. The Generalized Differential Quadrature Method (GDQM) and Differential Transformation Method (DTM) were recently proposed by Shu and Zou, respectively. In this study, GDQM and DTM were applied to the vibration analysis of circular arches with variable cross section. The governing equations of motion for circular arches with variable cross section were derived. The concepts of Differential Transformation and Generalized Differential Quadrature were briefly introduced. The non-dimensionless natural frequencies of circular arches with variable cross section were obtained for various boundary conditions. The results obtained using these methods were compared with those of previous works. GDQM and DTM showed fast convergence, accuracy, efficiency, and validity in solving the vibration problem of circular arches with variable cross section.

  • Among many algorithms for the integration problems in which one wants to compute the approximation to the definite integral in the average case setting, we study the average case errors of numerical integration rules using interpolation. In particular, we choose the composite Newton-Cotes quadratures and the function values at equally spaced sample points on the given interval as information. We compute the average case error of composite Newton-Cotes quadratures and show that it is minimal(modulo a multiplicative constant).

  • This paper deals with the application of the numerical differentiation using the differential quadrature(DQ) in the curved member-like structural analysis. Derivative values of the geometry of structure are definitely needed for analyzing the structural behavior. For verifying the numerical differentiation using DQ, free vibration problems of arch are selected. Terms of curvature composed with the derivatives of arch geometry obtained herein are agreed quite well with exact values obtained explicitly. Natural frequencies subjected to terms of curvature obtained by DQ are agreed quite well with those in the literature. The numerical differentiation using DQ can be practically utilized in the structural analysis.

Free Vibration Analysis of Curved Beams with Varying Cross-Section (단면적이 변하는 곡선보의 진동해석)

  • The differential quadrature method(DQM) is applied to the free in-plane vibration analysis of circular curved beams with varying cross-section neglecting transverse shearing deformation. Natural frequencies are calculated for the beams with various opening angles and end conditions. Results obtained by the DQM are compared with available results by other methods in the literature. It is found that the DQM gives good accuracy even with a small number of grid points. In addition, the corrected results are given for the beams not previously presented for this problem.

  • 현대산업의 급속한 발전으로 에너지 또는 유용 광물자원의 고갈, 오염문제와 식량문제는 전지구적 차원에서 매우 심각해지고 있다. 지구표면의 대부분을 차지하고 있는 해양에는 풍부하고 다양한 생물자원과 광물자원이 아직도 대부분이 미개발 상태로 남아있다. 현재 전지구적 차원의 문제점을 해결하기 위해서 해양에 관한 연구개발은 세계 각국에서 활발하게 수행되고 있으며 최대의 관심사가 아닐 수 없다. 이와 같은 세계의 조류 속에서 일본 해양 생물공학 연구분야의 최근 움직임은 심상치가 않다. 따라서 일본의 최신 동향을 살펴보기 위해 본고에서는 일본 해양 생물공학 연구소와 해양과학기술센터에 관한 자료를 소개하고 우리의 대처방안에 대한 소견을 밝히고자 한다.
