The mean average fatigue score of subjects was $1.79{\pm}0.41$ : the physical fatigue revealed the highest value with a mean of $1.84{\pm}0.50$, followed by neurosensory fatigue with a mean of $1.77{\pm}0.42$, psychological fatigue with a mean score of $1.76{\pm}0.54$. 2. With the respect to the general characteristics of subjects, there were statistically significant differences in the patients' fatigue perception by age and the amount of sleeping time. Conclusions: We needed the further study about the relation between fatigue and Bell's palsy

Group A and B were both treated with basic oriental medicine treatment, and also group A was treated with bee venom aqua-acupunture additionaly. The groups were evaluated by Yanagihara's unweighted grading system before treatment, and at every one week till four weeks after treatment. Results: The Yanagihara's scores of group B were higher than those of group A before treatment, after one week and two weeks, but not statistically significant. After three and four weeks, the Yanagihara's scores of group A were higher than those of group B, but not statistically significant. The improvement indexes of group A were higher than those of group B from the first week and statistically significant after three and four weeks. Conclusion: Combinding bee venom aqua-acupunture theraphy on peripheral facial paralysis was more efficacious than the only use of basic oriental medicine treatment.

  • Objective : This study was designed to investigate the relation between the angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE) gene polymorphism and Facial nerve palsy in the Korean population. Methods : This sudy was carried out on 117 Facial nerve palsy patients who were treated in the department of acupuncture & moxibustion, Hospital of Oriental medical college, Kyung-Hee University and 135 healthy control subjects. Blood samples from all subjects were obtaind for DNA extraction. The extracted DNA was amplified by polymerase chain reaction(PCR). PCR products were visualized by 2% agarose gel electrophoresis. Results : The sub-genotypes of ACE gene were II homozygotes, ID heterozygotes, DD homozygotes. While the distribution of ACE polymorphism in control subjects was 33%, 43%, 24%, the distribution of it in Facial nerve palsy patients was 32%, 50%, 18%(II, ID, DD). Thus, there was no significant different between the control and Facial nerve palsy groups. Conclusions : we conclude that there is no significant association between ACE gene polymorphism and Facial nerve palsy in Korean population. However, the findings of this study need to be confirmed in more patients and further studies. Additional epidemiologically based studies of the effects and relationship between ACE or other genes and lifestyles with regard to Facial nerve palsy is required.

  • Facial palsy is a common disease in clinic, which can be classified into central and peripheral according to the causes. The central facial palsy is caused by cerebral vascular accident, brain tumor, etc. The peripheral facial palsy comes from cold stimulus on face, regional infection of virus, suppurative tympanitis, inflammation on mastoid process, pathological teeth, trauma like cranial fracture, and so forth, They have distinctive features in diagnosis. While the central facial palsy is followed by hemiplegia and articulation disorder, the peripheral one by the disappearance of wrinkles on the forehead and rising of eyeball on paralyzed side when closing the eyes. Most of the cases in this thesis are peripheral palsy. The social classes and ages of the patients are so various that the treatments must be applied from various standpoints. The statistical data shows that the functional weakness of the whole body is the fundamental condition of the facial palsy. Therefore it is very important to find and the exact pathology and treatment appropriate for Hyungsang of the patients.

Anti-inflammatory pharmacopuncture. We divided into two groups. One was control group that was treated only Acupuncture and Herbal therapy and The other was a Anti-inflammatory pharmacopuncture group and the conclusions for treatment are as follows. Results : 1. Regarding alleviation of pain by VAS, Anti-inflammatory pharmacopuncture Group II showed significant decrease of VAS in the 5days treatment. 2. They were not significant score within two groups after 5th days treatment. 3. As a result of evaluation by using Yanagihara score, they were not significant score within two groups after final treament.

  • Objectives : This study is designed to evaluate correlation between the data of D.I.T,I examination in Bell's palsy and the improving period. Methods : This study researched into the clinical statistics for 50 patients who are in Bell's palsy and they are treated with oriental medical care of Dongshin university during 18months from January 1, 2005 to June 1, 2006. The data which examinated by D.I.T.I, are the thermal difference of normal and abnormal site of acupuncture int Gl4 BL2 GB3 S3 S4 S6 TE17 in Bell's palsy. Result : There was statistic significance between thermal difference of normal, abnormal site and the improving period. The period was shorter in normal thermal pattern than hypothermal pattern, hyperthermal pattern. Conclusion : According to the result, there was a statistic significance that more thermal difference and more difficult to recover in Bell's palsy.

Result and Conclusion : Children's bell's palsy is mostly caused by recent upper respiratory infection and developed most frequently on March, September, seasonally in Spring, Autumn. A group of children's bell's palsy was marked much higher than a group of adult's bell's palsy conducted by Kim's report with oriental medicine in treatment outcome. But we discovered that there was not the signifcant difference between two groups.

Methods : Twenty five patients were treated by korean medical treatment including Hwangryunhaedok-tang pharmacopuncture. We measured valuation standards such as House-Brackmann Grade(H-B Grade) and Numeric Rating Scale(NRS) to assess the effectiveness of treatments. These valuation standards were measured at admisson and discharge. Results : The results were obtained as below. 1. In House-Brackmann Grade, 60.0% of patients were improved and 36.0% were maintained at the same level. 4.0% of patients were worsen. 2. Average of Numeric Rating Scale was changed from 8.5 to 3.0 after whole treatment. Conclusions : Korean medical treatments including Hwangryunhaedok-tang pharmacopunture can be effective for improving symptoms of facial paralysis.
