Communication Effect on Subscription Service : Focusing on Time Presentation Method and Subscription Type of Subscription Service (구독 서비스에 대한 커뮤니케이션 효과 : 구독 서비스의 시간 제시 방식과 구독 유형을 중심으로)

  • As the consumption paradigm shifts from 'possession' to 'subscription', the subscription economy market is growing rapidly. The subscription economy is characterized by the fact that consumers can pay for and purchase products and services and use them limitedly for a limited time. Therefore, this study examined the effect of subjective perception of the time (duration) of consumers' subscription service use on subscription intention according to the time presentation method (duration/date) of subscription service use. In addition, the effect of differences in time presentation methods according to the type of subscription service (utility/hedonic) on subscription intention was examined. As a result of the study, the willingness to subscribe was higher when offering by date than when offering by date. In addition, for subscription services consumed for practical purposes, there was no difference in the effect on subscription intention according to the time presentation method. appeared to be Based on these results, the theoretical significance and practical implications of this study were presented.

A Study on the Improvement of Electronic Journal Subscription Method using Unsub (Unsub를 활용한 전자저널 구독방식 개선 연구)

  • This study analyzed the number of electronic journal subscriptions, subscription fees, usage, cost-effectiveness, etc. of university libraries to identify limitations and problems. Based on this, a case library was selected and the simulation tools Unsub was used to compare the efficiency of package subscriptions and individual subscriptions and suggest improvement measures. In the case of C University Library, SAGE and Emerald were found to be cost-effective as package subscriptions, while ScienceDirect and OUP were found to be worth considering for individual subscriptions. In particular, OUP was found to save £6,063 per year with individual subscriptions, and the ratio of accessible and usable articles reached 85.8%. In addition, ScienceDirect was found to be the most effective model for combining individual subscriptions and pay-per-view systems, considering budget savings and ease of use. Based on the results of this case study, the limitations of Unsub's application and policy tasks for developing a 'K-Unsub' version suitable for the Korean situation were suggested.

  • The dominant model of acquiring scholarly contents at academic libraries is so called big deal where libraries subscribe to a bundle of hundreds, if not thousands of journals in a multi-year contract with fixed annual rate increase. The bid deal, started in the mid-1990s, offered a number of advantages for academic libraries and their users. However, escalating prices for these packages have become a serious issue casting doubts about the sustainability of the subscription-based model. At the moment, it appears there is no viable alternative other than pay-per-view method that is being tested at some libraries. Libraries' budget situation will remain a key factor that might change the situation. Open access started in the 2000s as a vehicle to eliminate barriers to publishing and distributing peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles. Open access publishing is witnessing two-digit growth annually. Open access articles now occupy close to 20% of two major citation databases: Scopus and Web of Science. Google Scholar service, debuted in late 2004, is now a popular tool for discovering and accessing scholarly articles from a vast selection of journals around the world. There is a call for taking Google Scholar seriously as a potential replacement of library databases amid concerns regarding the quality of journals indexed, limited search capabilities vis-$\grave{a}$-vis library databases, and monopoly of public goods. Escalating budget problems, rapid growth of open access publishing and the emergence of powerful free tool, such as Google Scholar, need to be taken seriously as these forces might bring disruptive changes to the existing subscription-based model of scholarly contents at academic libraries.

  • Open source software has a feature that offers its service by the subscription method without getting a license fee. Therefore, this business style needs a different form of estimate criteria from other proprietary software, which is paid by license fees and maintenance service fees. However, consumers, including the public sector, don't understand this feature. This problem has kept the open source software business from attaining prosperity. I would like to provide a model for the estimate criteria that can apply to the open source software business by investigating and developing various advanced research and market examples.

Cost-aware Optimal Transmission Scheme for Shared Subscription in MQTT-based IoT Networks (MQTT 기반 IoT 네트워크에서 공유 구독을 위한 비용 관리 최적 전송 방식)

  • As technology advances, Internet of Things (IoT) technology is rapidly evolving as well. Various protocols, including Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT), are being used in IoT technology. MQTT, a lightweight messaging protocol, is considered a de-facto standard in the IoT field due to its efficiency in transmitting data even in environments with limited bandwidth and power. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the message transmission method in MQTT 5.0, specifically focusing on the shared subscription feature. The widely used round-robin method in shared subscriptions has the drawback of not considering the current state of the clients. To address this limitation, we propose a method to select the optimal transmission method by considering the current state. We model this problem based on Markov decision process (MDP) and utilize Q-Learning to select the optimal transmission method. Through simulation results, we compare our proposed method with existing methods in various environments and conduct performance analysis. We confirm that our proposed method outperforms existing methods in terms of performance and conclude by suggesting future research directions.

  • This paper analyzes previous work on publish/subscribe in mobile ad-hoc networks with respect to collaboration methods among distributed event brokers. Our experiments suggest that approaches building event delivery structures are suitable for a scenario where there are events of various types each of which is consumed by a few subscribers. However, these approaches based on independent periodic exchange of network topology information may fail to reflect the up-to-date information when building event delivery paths. For this reason they do not correctly recover a broken path caused by node mobility, which results in lower event delivery rates. This paper proposes a scheme for building and maintaining event delivery paths based on advertisements initiated by and hence propagated from the root node. This guarantees correct recovery of event delivery paths within each period. Our experiments show that, our proposed scheme gives a better event delivery ratio with lower overhead.

  • Publish-subscribe communication model is popular for various type of distributed applications because of its loosely coupled style connections. Among the various architecture style for publish-subscribe system, peer-to-peer architecture has been used for the mission critical application domain since it provides high scalability and real-timeness. On the other hand, to utilize the bandwidth of given networks, message filtering is frequently used to reduce the number of messages on the system. Even if P2P provides superior scalability, it is hard to apply filtering to the its messaging system because the filtering process should be done on the peer-side in P2P architecture that are usually done on the broker server in conventional pub/sub architecture. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical subscription management structure as well as message forwarding scheme for efficient data dissemination. Our proposed scheme reduces the number of received messages by filter-out un-wanted messages and offloading the message dissemination work to other subscribers to enhance the messaging throughput.

A Study on the Operational Model for Open Access Based e-Journal Subscription of University Library (대학도서관의 오픈액세스 기반 전자저널 구독을 위한 운영모델 연구)

  • In this study, we investigated the problems of existing e-journal subscriptions caused by open access of e-journals faced by university libraries. To solve these problems, we proposed an operational model for open access based subscription. The proposed operational model, which adapts the four concepts of subscription model, system, policy, and operation interpreted according to reality, applies open access on the premise of rational subscription of electronic journals. The proposed operational model was constructed based on national support, comprehensive operation, open access based model, and cooperation system. In particular, it emphasized the need for stable and continuous access to scholarly information through national support policy. The proposed operational model can be used as a basic data for the realization and research of open access in the domestic environment.

A Study of Factors Affecting the Amount of Children's YouTube Use (어린이의 유튜브 이용량에 미치는 영향 요인 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify what factors have impacts on the amount of YouTube viewing. In doing so, usage type, children's levels of self-control on viewing, parent's perception of media contents, and parental mediation style were investigated by age. The result of the study showed no significant differences of the amount of use by the different age groups. There were, however, significant differences in terms of subscription status(non subscription based vs. subscription-based viewing), level of self-control, perception of content, and parent's mediations (technology, supervision, and guidance). Given the amount of YouTube use, the subscription status and parent's supervision were significantly influential factors for the age group of 3-4 years old. For the age group of 5-6, subscription status, levels of self-control, and mediation of parent's supervision and guidance were influential factors. For the age of 7-9, subscription status, the level of self control, and premium service were significantly influential. Finding similarities and differences in meaningful variables by age group suggests that different strategies should be used to reduce the amount of children's YouTube use. In addition, it raises the need for a more detailed classification of children's YouTube usage methods, which have not been addressed so far, and the need for research on the influence of these methods.

  • Software as a Service (SaaS) has become one of the fastest-growing software business models in recent years. Even during the economic downturn following the pandemic, the SaaS business has emerged as a crucial model for IT companies. The revenue structure of SaaS, which is based on the subscription economy model, ensures that users pay only for the services used. In other words, SaaS operates on a subscription-based billing model, thus providing subscribers access to software uploaded to cloud computers via the Internet. This study aimed to explore the manner by which software-solution firms have to counteract the decline in profit and loss sales caused by changing their business-model orientation from on-premise deployment software to subscription-based software. Additionally it analyzes a method for selecting a subscription-based pricing model and rapidly recovering the investment costs via quantitative business-viability assessment. By calculating subscription fees via a more quantitative business-viability evaluation instead of focusing on conventional business-planning methods that rely on qualitative methods, companies are expected to be equipped in providing services to customers at reasonable costs. This strategy will facilitate them in leading emerging growth sectors.
