  • Serials subscription prices continue to escalate but university library budgets of those have not grown concurrently at the same rate. In fact, library budgets of serials subscription have decreased as a percentage of total library expenditure. Also titles with little or no use should be cancelled to make room for new serials that might be needed to reflect new research interests or changes in curriculum. This study includes overview of the serials cancellation and substitute solutions for subscriptions in university library. Taking into account costs and coverages, availability of cancelled serials through interlibrary loan is high in general. There is a potential for considerable savings by providing access to low-use titles, and that is a combination of commercial document delivery and pay per view based on e-business could be a viable alternative to subscription in many cases.

To achieve this purpose, we selected 1,745 foreign academic journals randomly among the holdings at K institute in Korea, and analyzed the relationships between the CPU and 5 factors of journal, i.e., Impact Factors (IF), Overlap numbers of holding with other institutes, Language, Cost, and Frequency of use. It is found that all factors, except IF, are significantly influence to the CPU of foreign journals, and further detailed analysis is provided in term of the group differences within each factors.

  • Price promotion is one of the most frequently marketing strategies with a long history. According to various studies, the effect of price promotion is controversial. Some studies have argued that price promotion has a positive effect, while others have found that it has no effect or rather has a negative effect. This study aims to examine the effect of price promotion in a subscription-based service. First, we check the effect of price promotion on the repurchase of the consumer. And we investigate how this effect varies depending on the characteristics of the consumer. Using the data from one of the music streaming service in South Korea, the effect of consumers' price promotion experience, demographic characteristics, and behavioral characteristics on their repurchase is analyzed through logistic regression analysis. As a result of the study, it is found that consumers' experience of price promotion has a positive effect on repurchase. In addition, the positive effect of price promotion is relatively greater in younger and female consumers. This study has implications in that it not only confirmed the positive effect of price promotion in a subscription-based environment but also empirically confirmed that the characteristics of consumers should be considered when performing price promotion.

  • During global recessions, such as the 2008 financial crisis, Korean shipping companies have been undergoing a liquidity crisis that is comparably worse than other shipping companies worldwide. One of the reasons behind this repetitive vicious cycle can be the lack of ability to foresee the future by analyzing and understanding the volatile shipping market. Traditionally, in order to assimilate the shipping market, larger Korean shipping companies have been purchasing market reports published by Europe-based research companies and shipping brokers, leading to a digital divide by company size. To resolve this issue, the Maritime Exchange Information Center (MEIC) has been publishing shipping market reports that include essential shipping information such as freight rates by different routes; commodity trends for iron ore, grain, and coal; ship-building trends for new-building, second-hand, and demolition markets; as well as bunker price and port congestion. This research was conducted to analyze the effectiveness of four variables-information usefulness, market reflection, information composition, and latest information-on information satisfaction. If the information satisfaction was found to be adequate, the analysis of actual proof was used to determine if the customers would be willing to purchase MEIC's report when it is chargeable. All the four variables were found to have positive effects on information satisfaction. In particular, latest information was found to directly affect the intention to purchase. Furthermore, high information satisfaction was related to the intention to purchase.

  • This study attempts to derive an economic analysis model for journal evaluation and conducts a case analysis based on the model. Total costs are calculated and include administrative fees (such as binding, ordering, claiming, etc.) and subscription costs. The model quantifies qualitative benefits to users, a utility that combines usage data that has also been evaluated in the existing economic analysis models. The model is designed by the usage statistics of the web-based electronic journals, which have become important resources for research. Rankings are assigned based on how items are utilized to the goal of the mother institution. In the case study based on the KDI School Library, the highest ranking off was assigned to journals that patrons used for citation in their outputs. For journals that were used background information, i.e., full text downloading or browsing , each was assigned ranking of 2 and 1, respectively. According to the analysis, the top 20 journals provided 75% of the entire library utility, showing different user behaviors among different cohorts. We expect that the model makes it possible for librarians to measure the value of journals. It can provide a basic tool for journal selection, particularly in special libraries with custom needs.

  • In this study we shall compare the differences among Korean tourists' behavioral patterns according to tourists' residences by using statistical techniques on questionnaires for 1,372 tourists around Korea. In conclusion, we found varying degrees of influences among touristic behaviors in relation to residences, We documented 11 out of 14 categories of touristic behaviors in urban/rural areas around Korea. And there were 4 out of 14 categories of those found in provincial areas. Characteristics of urban/rural areas had a significant influence on touristic behaviors compared to provincial areas. Therefore, tour authorities provide for a balanced policy of travel around Korea. As mentioned above, these touristic behaviors had many differences according to urban/rural areas and provinces. We are concerned that these differences are likely to cause psychological disturbances among social classes. I hope that these results will be reflected in the development policies of tourist goods and tour sites.
