  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure the absorbed dose and to calculate the effective dose for one periapical radiography using the portable and wall type dental X-ray machines. Materials and methods: Thermoluminescent chips were placed at 25 sites throughout the layers of the head and neck of a tissue-equivalent human skull phantom. The man phantom was exposed with the portable and wall type dental X-ray machines. For one periapical radiography taken by portable dental X-ray machine, the exposure setting was 60 kVp, 2 mA and 0.2 seconds, while for one periapical radiography taken by wall type dental X-ray machine, exposure setting was 70 kVp, 8 mA and 0.074 seconds. Absorbed dose measurements were performed and equivalent doses to individual organs were summed using ICRP 103 to calculate effective dose. Results: In the upper anterior periapical radiography using portable dental X-ray machine and in the lower posterior periapical radiography using both machines, the highest absorbed dose was recorded at the mandible body. The effective dose in upper anterior periapical radiography using portable and wall type dental X-ray machines was $4{\mu}Sv$, $2{\mu}Sv$, respectively. In the lower posterior periapical radiography, the effective dose for each portable and wall type dental X-ray machines was $6{\mu}Sv$, $2{\mu}Sv$. Conclusion: It was recommended that the operator use prudently potable dental X-ray machine because that the effective dose in the periapical radiography using wall type dental X-ray machine was lower than that in the periapical radiography using portable dental X-ray machine.

  • Existing Intra-oral radiography examinations have problems with information on the angle of incidence used in textbook and those used in the field, and radiologic examinations result vary depending on the operator's skill. Therefore, this study aimed to suggest an ideal angle of incidence for radiological examination so that the proximal areas between teeth are clearly visible without overlapping. First, patient's dental arch in the exact center, and the angle of incidence of the point where the teeth did not overlap was measured using a protractor tool in program. Second, based on the calculated results, we surveyed patient phantoms for student practice during Intra-oral radiography examination and conducted a survey based on qualitative evaluation using a 5-point Likert scale. When comparing the average value obtained by measuring actual patient data and the angle specified in the existing reference book, there is a statistically significant difference in the average between the two groups at p < 0.05 in the proximal area of all teeth, and even if the gender and age group are different, there is a significant difference. Because it did not deviate from the scope, we were able to obtain results that could be sufficiently presented as guidelines. In addition, in a qualitative evaluation based on the images presented by applying the actual measured data to the phantom, images were obtained in which the adjacent surfaces of teeth do not overlap. In conclusion, this study proposes guidelines for the angle of incidence during Intra-Oral Radiography examination to reduce cone-cut images or images with overlapping proximal area and prevent repeat.

  • Purpose: Oral mucositis is a common toxicity of radiation or chemotherapy, which is used a treatment for head and neck cancer. We investigated effects of recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) on radiation-induced oral mucositis in rat model. Materials and Methods: Spraque-Dawley rats (7 per group) exposed to a single dose of 25 Gy (day 0) on their head, except for one group, were randomly divided into un-treated, vehicle-treated, and two rhEGF-treated groups. Rats were topically applied with rhEGF (15 or $30{\mu}g/oral$ cavity/day) or vehicle to their oral mucosa. Survival rate of rats, weight changes, and food intakes were examined from day 0 to 18 after radiation. Histology study was performed from oral mucosa of rats at day 7 and 18 after radiation. Results: rhEGF-treated groups (15 or $30{\mu}g/oral$) showed all survival rate 33%, whereas un-treated and vehicle-treated groups showed all survival rate 0% at the end of experiment. rhEGF-treated groups statistically had less weight loss compared to vehicle-treated group from day 2 to 7 after radiation. Food intake of rats with rhEGF treatment turned to increase at day 14 after radiation. At 7 day after radiation, un-treated and vehicle-treated groups showed severe pseudomembraneous or ulcerative oral mucositis. On the other hand, rhEGF-treated groups had no more than cellular swelling and degeneration of epidermal cells in oral mucosa of rats. Conclusion: These results suggest that rhEGF has significantly positive effects on radiation-induced oral mucositis in rats. rhEGF display a therapeutic potential on a clinical level.

  • In this study, three dimensional X-ray dose distribution from dental X-ray generator system was measured by ALOKA PDM-117 dosimeter. The X-ray dose distribution will be change with XCP-DS FIT in oral shot, because the distance between X-ray generator and the dosimeter. The X-ray dose change affects on patient exposure and radiograph image quality. Therefore, it is important to obtain relation between the X-ray dose and the distance. The X-ray dose at the central position was decreased with increasing the distance. Furthermore, the dose at the edge of the X-ray flux was increased with increasing the distance. The increased dose affects on the patient radiation exposure. The present results will provide for good dental radiograph image and reducing radiation over-exposure on patient.
