To evaluate the effects of an artifact by metal material for orthodontics in Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) examination, wires and brackets used in orthodontics were selected and compared. Using a head coil, a $T_2$-weighted image, $T_1$-weighted image and FLAIR image were obtained. With obtained images, the sizes of the artifacts were measured and compared using Image J Program. In the research, the material with the biggest artifact in the wires and brackets for orthodontics was stainless steel wire. In the future, selecting and developing metal for correction should be considered also in other fields along with the purpose of orthodontics.
The stainless steel wire is extensively used for the orthodontic treatment. But, the stainless steel wire that has commonly superior corrosion resistance has caused hypersensitive reaction or allergy as side effects because of corrosion in the oral environment. For improving the problem of corrosion, we was evaluated the suitability of the duplex stainless steel(DSS) as orthodontic wire through this study. The DSS wire was evaluated the mechanical strength and bio-stability for suitability and bio-compatibility as orthodontic wire. In this work, the DSS and stainless steel(SS) as common use of medical grade were prepared for the tensile strength test. The DSS wire were treated by heat. and Temperature conditions of the heat treatment were $28^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$, $700^{\circ}C$, $800^{\circ}C$, $900^{\circ}C$, respectively. And the DSS wires that treated by heat on the optimum temperature condition were conducted the bending moment test and calculated the S-Max value and the modulus of elasticity. For evaluating the bio stability, each materials were conducted in vitro test for measuring the cell survival rate. The most interesting results was that the tensile strength test of SS wire($8.17\times10^4\;N/mm^2$) and DSS wire($8.05\times10^4\;N/mm^2$) that treated at $500^{\circ}C$ by heat were similar in mechanical strength. In the bio-stability study, the DSS has no cytotoxicity (p=0.05) Thus, we could make a conclusion that the duplex stainless steel wire has vastly superior corrosion resistance was suitable as orthodontic wire.
The object of this study was to evaluate how friction that occurs during the sliding movement of an orthodontic archwire through orthodontic brackets is differently affected by variant designs and ingredients of brackets and archwires and bracket-archwire angles. In order to simulate the situations which could occur during orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances, 4 types of brackets (Gemini, a stainless steel twin bracket, Mini Uni-Twiu. a stainless steel bracket with a single bracket design and narrow mesio-distal width; Clarity, a metal-reinforced ceramic bracket; Transcend, a ceramic bracket) and 3 types of orthodontic archwires $(0.016',\; 0.016{\times}0.022'\;stainless\;steel,\;0.016'\;Nitinol)$ were used and the bracket-archwire angles were controlled as $0^{\circ},\;3^{\circ}\;6^{\circ},\;and\;9^{\circ}$ Gemini significantly show and the lowest static and kinetic frictions (P<0.001) Clarity showed the highest static and kinetic frictions with a bracket-archwire angle of $0^{\circ}$. and Transcend at $6^{\circ}\;and\;9^{\circ}$ (P<0.001). An $0.016{\times}0.022'$ stainless steel rectangular archwire significantly showed the highest static and kinetic frictions (P<0.01). The lowest static and kinetic frictions were observed when the bracket-archwire angles were $0^{\circ}\;and\;3^{\circ}$ with 0.010' stainless steel round archwires (P<0.01), and $6^{\circ}\;and\;9^{\circ}$ with 0.016 Nitinol (P<0.001). The static and kinetic frictions were increased as the bracket-archwire angles were increased (P<0.001)
Objective: The aim of this study was to validate the Periotest values for the prediction of orthodontic mini-implants' stability. Methods: Sixty orthodontic mini-implants (7.0 mm $\times$$\emptyset1.45$ mm; ACR, Biomaterials Korea, Seoul, Korea) were inserted into the buccal alveolar bone of 5 twelve month-old beagle dogs. Insertion torque (IT) and Periotest values (PTV) were measured at the installation procedure, and removal torque (RT) and PTV were recorded after 12 weeks of orthodontic loading. To correlate PTV with variables, the cortical bone thickness (mm) and bone mineral density (BMD) within the cortical bone and total bone area were calculated with the help of CT scanning. Results: The BMD and cortical bone thickness in mandibular alveolus were significantly higher than those of the maxilla (p < 0.05). The PTV values ranged from -3.2 to 4.8 for 12 weeks of loading showing clinically stable mini-implants. PTV at insertion was significantly correlated with IT (-0.51), bone density (-0.48), cortical bone thickness (-0.42) (p < 0.05) in the mandible, but showed no correlation in the maxilla. PTV before removal was significantly correlated with RT (-0.66) (p < 0.01) in the mandible. Conclusions: These results show that the periotest is a useful method for the evaluation of mini-implant stability, but it can only be applied to limited areas with thick cortical and high density bone such as the mandible.
The purpose of this study was to search for an appropriate method of coating $TiO_2$ on orthodontic appliances. $TiO_2$ thin films were deposited on orthodontic wires and brackets using sol-gel, CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) and PE-CVD (Plasma Enhanced-CVD) methods. The roughness of $TiO_2$-coated surfaces was investigated via scanning electron microscope (SEM) and adhesive strength of $TiO_2$ thin films was measured by adhesive tape pull test. Methylene blue degradation test was carried out to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ and the corrosion resistance of $TiO_2$ thin films against fluoride solution was also analyzed by observing the surfaces of $TiO_2$-coated wires and brackets via SEM after immersion in sodium fluoride solution. Through the comparison of properties and photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ thin films according to the coating methods, the following results were obtained. Smoother surfaces of $TiO_2$ thin films were generated by CVD or PE-CVD methods than through the sol-gel method or the control. Adhesive strength of the $TiO_2$ thin films was highest in PE-CVD and gradually became lower in the order of CVD, then the sol-gel method. Photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ thin films on methylene blue was the highest in PE-CVD and gradually became lower in the order of CVD, then the sol-gel method. Corrosion resistance of $TiO_2$ thin films against fluoride solution was stronger in CVD and PE-CVD methods than in the sol-gel method. The results of this study suggest that the CVD or PE-CVD methods is more appropriate than the sol-gel method for $TiO_2$ coating on orthodontic wires and brackets.

Orthodontic seamless bands are frequently used in pediatric dentistry. In the process of seating bands with luting cement coated inside, not uniformed coating might bring about various problems such as enamel decalcification and/or gingivitis, and this clinical trial was made to review several band-seating methods to exclude these risks. One kind of band luting cement and one size of seamless bands were used on the resin replicas of an extracted maxillary and mandibular 1st molar with three different seating methods 1. seating the band with the luting cement coated only inside the band, 2. seating the band with the luting cement coated inside the band and on axial surfaces of the teeth, 3. seating the band with the adhesive tape on the occlusal opening of the band and the luting cement coated only inside the band. After cement was completely set, bands were peeled off from the teeth and the status of cement coating was evaluated. With this experiment more uniformed coating of the luting cement was found in latter two groups. These methods are thought more appropriate to almost completely rule out the risk of unevenly coated cement beneath the bands by conventional method.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants of different surfaces, namely, machined (untreated), etched (acid-etched), RBM (treated with resorbable blasting media) and hybrid (RBM + machined), with respect to the following criteria: physical appearance of the surface, measurement of surface roughness, and insertion pattern. Methods: Self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants (Osstem implant, Seoul, Korea) with the abovementioned surfaces were obtained. Surface roughness was measured by using a scanning electron microscope and surface-roughness-testing machine, and torque patterns and vertical loadings were measured during continuous insertion of mini-implants into artificial bone (polyurethane foam) by using a torque tester of the driving-motor type (speed, 12 rpm). Results: The mini-implants with the RBM, hybrid, and acid-etched surfaces had slightly increased maximum insertion torque at the final stage ($p$ < 0.05). Implants with the RBM surface had the highest vertical load for insertion ($p$ < 0.05). Testing for surface roughness revealed that the implants with the RBM and hybrid surfaces had higher Ra values than the others ($p$ < 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy showed that the implants with the RBM surface had the roughest surface. Conclusions: Surface-treated, self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants may be clinically acceptable, if controlled appropriately.

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a self-curing resin mainly used in removable orthodontic appliances, is an acrylic resin mainly used in the field of modern dentistry. As an advantage, it has been used for a long time as a material for orthodontic devices in dentistry due to its color and volume, tissue affinity, and stability. The production of PMMA can be divided into self-polymerization method and thermal polymerization method according to activation method. Self-curing resins have long been used as orthodontic devices. The resin injection method is largely divided into a sprinkle-on method and a mixing method. In this study, we intend to test the mechanical properties according to the resin injection method of the orthodontic device, such as strength, modulus of elasticity, and surface roughness. There was no significant difference in strength as a result of three-point bending strength test on rectangular specimens (1.4 × 3.0 × 19.0 mm) of orthodontic PMMA. There was also no significant difference in hardness. There was no significant difference in surface roughness. It was confirmed that the orthodontic PMMA had no significant difference in mechanical properties according to the resin injection method of the orthodontic device.
As increasing number of adult patients, the esthetic orthodontic appliances are needed. They are tooth-colored or translucent ceramic and resin brackets. Although ceramic and resin bracket have good esthetics, there are some disadvantage such as frictions. Recently, metal-reinforced resin bracket(MRBB) were introduced. The purpose of this study is to find frictional force of MRRB, ceramic bracket and resin brackets. There is few study in frictional force about metal reinforced resin bracket(MRRB). This study used 4 orthodontic wire(.016 S-S, .0l6X.022 S-S, .016 $TMA^{\circledR}$, .0l7X.025 $TMA^{\circledR}$ and 5 brackets(one metal bracket, one ceramic bracket, one resin bracket, two MRRB). The following result is obtained using metal bracket(Ormco.Co., U.S.A), ceramic brackets($Crystalline^{\circledR}$), resin bracket( Clear Medium $Siamase^{\circledR}$). Following conclusions are obtained. 1. Ceramic and resin bracket have significantly more frictional forces than metal reinforced resin bracket and metal bracket. 2. There is no significant difference in frictional force according to the slot types of metal - reinforced resin brackets. 3. There is no significant difference in frictional force between metal reinforced resin bracket and metal bracket. 4.. Frictional force is decreased in S-S wire than TMA wire.
