  • This study was conducted to verify the impact of department and major satisfaction, as well as teacher efficacy, on the career aspiration of pre-service early childhood teachers. Data from 118 students majoring in a three-year early childhood education in Gyeonggi-do were collected and analyzed. Regression analysis was performed to assess the impact of department and major satisfaction and teacher efficacy on career aspiration, along with an analysis of the mediating effect of teacher efficacy. The results showed that department and major satisfaction had a positive effect on career aspiration, with general satisfaction among the sub-variables identified as a significant factor influencing career aspiration. Additionally, both teacher efficacy and its sub-variables, general teaching efficacy and personal teaching efficacy, were found to positively influence career aspiration. Furthermore, teacher efficacy was found to significantly mediate the relationship between department and major satisfaction and career aspiration, indicating it as an important variable in career education for pre-service early childhood teachers. The results of this study provide basic data for career education of pre-service early childhood teachers and suggest alternative methods for improving department and major satisfaction as well as teacher efficacy.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze a structural relations which occur when college students' inner and outer career barrier impacts on career decision status through the mediating variables of career decision making self-efficacy and career aspiration. The data of 787 college students subjects were collected for the study. The measuring tools were Career Decision Status, Outer Career Barriers, Inner Career Barriers, Career Aspiration, and Career Decision Making Self-Efficacy. The collected data were analyzed with structural equation modeling(SEM). The findings of the study were as follows. Results showed that only inner career barriers affect career decision status through the mediating variables of career decision making self-efficacy and career aspiration among outer and inner career barriers anticipated to give negative impact on level of career decision making. Inner career barriers affect career decision making self-efficacy negatively, and career decision making self-efficacy gives positive impact on career aspiration, and career aspiration affects career decision status negatively. In other words, the more aware of inner career barriers, the lower career decision making self-efficacy.

  • In this study, we investigated the influences of Integrated Science on the views of 10th graders with regards to the nature of science (NOS), STS, interest in science, and science aspiration, in order to explore the effects of Integrated Science developed under the 2009 Revised National Curriculum. Participants in this study were 214 10th graders in Seoul. The survey was administered at the beginning and at the end of the Integrated Science course. The analyses of the results revealed that there was no statistically significant difference in the scores of the pre-test and post-test on the NOS survey. However, the post-test scores of the tentativeness of scientific knowledge and the use of imagination, which are the sub-constructs of the NOS, were found to be significantly lower than the pre-test scores. There were no statistically significant differences in the frequencies of the responses to each item of the STS survey. The pre-test and post-test scores of the interest in science and the science aspiration were also not significantly different. The results indicated that Integrated Science did not have any impact on students' views on NOS, STS, interest in science, and science aspiration. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine variables affecting the occupational aspiration of elementary school students and the relationship of the variables in a bid to acquire empirical information on influential factors for the development of children's occupational aspiration. Out of the personal characteristics of school children, academic achievement, self-esteem and parental educational level that respectively belonged to the cognitive, affective and environmental domains were selected as the variables that might affect occupational aspiration. And the relationship of the variables to the level of occupational aspiration was selected as a research question of the study. The findings of the study were as follows: in relation to the level of occupational aspiration by gender, the girls were ahead of the boys. There were no statistically significant gaps in that aspect according to grade. And, the academic achievement of the elementary school students had a positive correlation to the level of their occupational aspiration, and there was no statistically significant relationship between self-esteem and the level of occupational aspiration. When academic achievement and self-esteem were selected as predictors, the two variables made a 8.5% prediction of the occupational aspiration of the fourth graders, and made a 12.3% prediction of the occupational aspiration of the sixth graders. There were no statistically significant differences in the level of occupational aspiration according to parental educational level. The fourth and sixth graders were found to have an occupational aspiration in consideration of not only the characteristics of occupations but their own academic achievement, namely their abilities.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the mediation effect of job satisfaction between job autonomy and career maturity in high school students. It sampled 849 students who have experienced part-time work. Data were analyzed by regression analysis with SPSS 18.0 version. Results showed significant relationships between socio-economic variables(gender, educational aspiration) and main variables. Females showed higher level of job autonomy, job satisfaction, and career maturity than males' ones. Second, job autonomy was a significant predictor of career maturity by gender and educational aspiration. In addition, job satisfaction proved to have a partial mediating effect on job autonomy and career maturity. Based on the results, this study suggest that adolescents actively participate when they work on the field, and employers have to recognize a role of collaborator about vocational education to increase the career maturity of adolescents. Also, communities and schools have to give adolescents right information on job and make an official system to find a good job.

  • This study sought to explore longitudinal changes in Korean fourth graders' career aspirations in science. The sample included those who had high interest, but low career aspirations in science, and the analysis focused on the concept of science identity. To achieve this study's objectives, we selected 14 participants and then conducted two in-depth interviews with them. Compared with the first interviews (4th grade), changes were observed in eight students' career aspirations in science in the second round (5th grade). While six students maintained "negative" career aspiration, six revealed "medium" and two revealed "positive" career aspiration in science. To explore the relationship between science identities and career aspirations in science, three students were selected from the sample for further study. According to the results, the aspects of science identity that students valued regarding potential careers varied individually. Depending on these aspects, each student showed different patterns in the interactions between different aspects of science identity, and between aspects of science identity and science-related career aspirations. Over time, participants' experiences and interactions with people around them produced changes in their science identity, which led to changes in their career aspirations resulting from the interactions between aspects of their science identity. Their career aspirations in science were also significantly influenced by each participant's perceptions of relationships with peers (i.e., recognition by peers and of peers) and of science-related careers. Therefore, the results suggest that students need to be provided with appropriate learning environments and guidance relating to science careers.
