This study considered the history and range of concern to the citizenship education in the British geography education with respect to the appearance of the citizenship subject in National Curriculum. Although British geography education mainly put on emphasis citizenship education focused on national identity through imperialism ideology up to World War II, it has aimed at the local and global citizenship education which put focus on the reflection of students to individual value and value position, and social justice after the 1980s. Not only an inner change of such geography education but the external factor of appearance of citizenship subject has stimulated more concern about citizenship education. After that, British geography education community constructs the logic of theoretical justification and urges teachers' practical research and continuous concern as plan for geography subject to lead citizenship education all the time. On the other hand, recently British political and social cultural geographers observe spaces of the citizenship which makes difference and identity and the radical and critical citizenship which put focus on the local and the global scale from the national. Therefore, citizenship education through geography subject must put more emphasis on not national identity but the local and global identity for social justice and a better world.

The purpose of this thesis is to find the guiding direction of mathematical communication in lower grade students of elementary school and to present a new direction about the effect of using concrete material in communication. It is expected that mathematical communication increases when concrete material is used for the students of the lower grades, who are in concrete operational period. Therefore, this study ai s to investigate what characteristics there are in mathematical communication of second grade students and what effect concrete materials have on mathematical communication and learning. The analysis of the teaching record shows that the second grade students use alternative terms in the process of communication since they are not familiar with mathematical symbols or terms, which is a characteristic of communication in a mathematics class in which concrete material is used. In the process of teaming the students apply their living experiences to their teaming. Since a small number of students lead class, the interaction between students is also led by them. The direction of communication in a small group is not centered around solution of a problem, and most students show a more interest in finding answers than in the process of learning. The effect that concrete material has on communication plays an important role in promoting students' speaking activity; it allows students to identify and correct their errors more easily. It also makes students' activities more predictable, and it increases a small group activities through the medium of concrete material. However, it was also noticed that students' listening activities are not appropriately developed since they do not pay attention to a teacher who uses concrete material. The effects that concrete material has on mathematics class can be summarized as follows. Concrete material promotes students' participation in class by triggering their interest of learning of mathematics and helps them to understand the course of learning. It also helps the teaming and formation of concepts for children of low academic performance. And it makes a phased learning possible according to students' ability to use concrete material and to solve a problem. Based upon the results above mentioned, the use of concrete material is absolutely needed in mathematics classes of lower grade elementary school students since it increases communication and gives much influence on mathematics learning. Therefore, teachers need to develop teaching or learning method which can help increase communication, considering the characteristics of students' communication.
An emerging learning method, flipped learning, has gained much interest lately due to its process involving prior study followed by the students' classroom involvement, which direction matches that of the current educational policy that emphasizes self-directed learning. This study investigated the concept of flipped learning and explored ways to develop instructional design models that utilize it. Flipped learning is not a model that has been recently developed, as it uses the format of blended learning with the introduction of a new concept of prior learning that allows students to learn in advance through online lessons and video clips related with the classroom content to be covered. During class time, individualized supplementary or in-depth study is conducted on the basis of the students' prior learning. The main considerations for designing flipped learning are a flexible classroom environment, a shift in learning culture, intentional classroom content, and educators equipped with professional capability. The research proposes the development of instructional design models for flipped learning pursuant to such concept and considerations. Through this research, the concept of flipped learning can be comprehended; furthermore, flipped learning can be utilized more effectively in the teaching and learning environment.

This study is to develop teaching materials for geological fieldwork around Bonghwabong area in the national park of the Byeonsan Peninsula, Buangun, Jeonbuk. The developed materials are applied in the geological fieldwork of science high school students to maximize the effects of use. The sedimentary succession of the Bonghwabong area in the Cretaceous age, Mesozoic, represents large-scale and distinctive sedimentary structures on the sea cliffs, which are utilized as teaching materials for earth science fieldwork. The area of Bonghwabong also comprises various geological structures related to advanced learning programs as well as those within the curriculum of high school earth science. A five-step fieldwork model was applied to 15 students in clubs related to earth science in a science high school. This study used a qualitative methodology to analyze students' responses that were gathered about the process of fieldwork. During the activity, a qualitative analysis was carried out by using discussions and interviews both with the students and the teacher. Results indicated that the fieldwork activity using teaching materials was effective in helping the students improve their self-directed learning and practical understanding of earth science.

This study aims to elucidate the historical origins of the long-term demand for the integration of "science subject classes" and "science-related events" within the context of science education for teachers. During the 1970s, science education in elementary schools faced a dual challenge marked by the tension between implementing the third curriculum, which emphasized fundamental science, and the "Pan-National Scientification Movement," which focused on technology education. The Ministry of Education was compelled to integrate the sudden demands of the Yushin regime into the ongoing third curriculum. As these demands emerged from dual policy directives, activities related to elementary science education were subsequently categorized into formal science subject classes and extracurricular science-related events. Although the movement did not directly alter the curriculum, it instigated modifications in personnel structure, activity spaces, and evaluation systems within schools. The introduction of the Pan-National Scientification Movement in elementary schools resulted in changes including the establishment of a new "science lead teacher system," the creation of a dedicated "science corner," and the implementation of a "science badge system." Although the movement was abruptly introduced, it ostensibly contributed to the advancement of the inquiry-oriented approach promoted by the third curriculum. Paradoxically, this advancement was facilitated by the integration of the consequences of the movement into schools' autonomous, extracurricular activities spearheaded by frontline education offices and schools. Although the movement represented a government-driven policy at a particular juncture in time, the manner in which science education practitioners responded to urgent governmental mandates, while preserving the integrity of the long-established third curriculum framework, involved dividing education activities into subject-specific classes and extracurricular science activities. Examining how science education practitioners in the 1970s proactively addressed these challenges offers valuable insights for the science education community in adapting to the current rapidly evolving educational landscape.

This study aimed to track changes in students' perception about schools over time, to analyze how participation in the Education Welfare Priority Support Project(hereafter "the Project") explains the changes, and to determine how the results of changes affect students' learning engagement, self-confidence, and peer relationship. Data were collected from 103 schools nation-wide(51 elementary and 52 middle schools) from 2015, 2016 and 2017 from 820, 911, and 837 students, respectively. The data were analyzed by applying a latent growth model with two stages: unconditional and conditional. The findings are that first, the perception about schools by the students who participated in the Project increased over time; and second, that the improvement of students' perception of schools has a positive influence on their learning engagement, self-confidence, and peer relationship. In the future, it was suggested that programs aimed at improving positive perception about schools should be provided to all students led by teachers, and a customized integrated support program should be arranged to students in need of intensive support by the educational welfare specialists.
