A Study of a Teacher Professional Development Program for Addressing Diversity Issues in School: The Case of Smithsonian Science Education Center (학교 내 다양성 문제 해결을 위한 교사 지원 프로그램에 대한 연구: 미국 스미스소니언 과학교육센터 사례를 중심으로)

  • Concerns related to diversity are important throughout society, especially in the context of expansive globalization. In education, diversity-related issues require careful consideration to ensure social groups that have historically been marginalized benefit from educational opportunities. In this study, we investigated a case from within the United States aimed at addressing diversity issues in schools and discuss the implications of this study in relation to diversity issues in Korea. More specifically, we examined the features of the professional development program designed and implemented by the Smithsonian Science Education Center, as well as survey results from teachers who participated between 2019-2020. Our findings revealed that the program provided participants context specific experiences, space and time to develop an in-depth understandings of the causes of diversity issues and supports to attend to the various perspectives needed to set specific goals and action plans and to examine, refine, and revise their plans. Further, features of the professional development program had meaningful effects on participants' learning experience as they were supported to identify useful proposals and take action to solve their specific diversity issues. The findings from this study offer important implications for designing professional development and organizing supports to address varied current and future diversity issues in Korean school contexts.

The Case Study of Science Gifted Students Who Dropped Out of School (학교중퇴를 선택한 과학영재에 대한 사례연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore why gifted students drop out of school by examining two gifted students who chose to drop out their schools. The result of triangulation interviews, observations, and analysis of the available documents revealed the following: first, in regular classrooms they were bored due to the long periods of time they had to wait and they were even unsatisfied at the gifted education programs in which they had high expectations for either; second, they did not have any friends to share the same interests; third, they had a hard time due to their emotional sensitivity and a sense of a justice that most other students overlooked; fourth, they had tough experiences with teachers who did not understood their educational and social needs; and finally, they had parents who did their best and tried to support their extraordinary child. From examining the reasons of the gifted students for deciding to leave the school, it should be noted that more interest and care needs to be given to those students.

The Development of Motivation Scale in the Visual Artistic Giftedness of the Elementary School Children (학동기 미술영재성 동기요인 검사도구 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the instruments which can measure motivation as a component of Visual Artistic Giftedness with in elementary school period. This study prescribed the variable factors of measurement after abstract and classify the characteristics of Visual Artistic Giftedness through literature studies. And it produced instruments those are finally composed of 27 items through the preliminary test. They were evaluated in terms of content validity, construct validity, and reliability by implementing them to 679 elementary school children from the first to sixth grades. Statistical analyses were carried out to verify the validities and reliability. Content validity was found to be satisfactory by experts' evaluation on the test items. Construct validity was also found to be satisfactory through factor analyses which showed the four factors which the identification instruments were intended to measure such as, interest/ attitude/ taste, endurance/ concentration, curiosity/ imagination! sensitiveness, aesthetic. Concurrent validity was also found to be satisfactory with high coeffients of Barron- Welsh which were calculated as .76 in motivation. In conclusion, the instruments about motivation of Visual Artistic Giftedness during elementary school period developed by this study are highly reliable on its reliability and validity.

Integrated Program Development for Creativity and Emotion of Elementary Lower Grade Students (초등 저학년 학생의 창의·정서 함양을 위한 통합 프로그램 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an integrated program to improve the creative and emotional ability of lower grade students. This program aimed to cultivate creative thinking and creative personality for problem solving, and to learn how to interact positively with others by developing emotional expression and control. Creative thinking ability includes fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration, imagination, and sensitivity. Creative personality includes curiosity, sensitivity, adventure, humor, independence, task commitment, and problem solving leadership. We selected 6 creative thinking skills such as mind-map and brainstorming. Emotional factors consist of self /other understanding, control of emotional effect, self-expression emotionally, and respect for others for cooperation. The integrated program consisted of 12 themes, and the class time was set to 40 minutes, which is the same as the elementary curriculum. The program was conducted by a teacher with 10 years' experience.

Development of dating violence prevention teaching-learning plan for high school Home Economics class (데이트폭력 예방을 위한 고등학교 가정과 교수·학습 과정안 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a teaching-learning plan applicable to high school technology·home economics and home science classes in order to prevent adolescents' dating violence which is one of the serious social problems we are facing lately. This research has following three steps: 1. Analyzing contents and selecting content elements, 2. Developing teaching-learning materials, and 3. Performing a pilot test and making corrections. In the first step, this author analyzes how the contents associated with dating violence are presented in the 2015 curriculum of technology·home economics and the textbooks and reviews related literatures to select content elements necessary to prevent dating violence for those going through adolescence. Based on that, in the second step, this researcher develops a teaching-learning plan for six lessons and then makes it verified by two experienced teachers of home economics. In the last step, the teaching-learning plan for six sessions developed is implemented to two high school classes, and then, based on the results of examining the opinions of the teachers implementing the plan and students about the class, this researcher modifies and complements the parts of the plan showing low applicability to the field and develops the final dating violence prevention teaching-learning plan. In order to prevent adolescents' dating violence, it is necessary to create a social environment safe from violence and provide violence prevention education before they begin to have relationship. This researcher expects that this teaching-learning plan is applied in home economics class and it can contribute to enhancing students' sensitivity about violence and improving their competencies to make wise judgments in problematic situations and cope with them properly.

A Comparison of Overexcitability and Social Self-Concept between the Scientifically Gifted and Non-Gifted Elementary Students (영재교육기관별 초등과학영재와 일반학생의 과흥분성과 사회적 자아개념 비교)

  • Overexcitability (OE) and social self-concept are the integral affective characteristics of science-gifted students. Overexcitability refers to sensitivity as an internal disposition to give a more often, longer and more intensive reaction to a wide variety of stimuli, and social self-concept refers to the way of behaving in society, especially at school in the case of students. The purpose of this study was to examine the overexcitability and social self-concept of science-gifted and non-gifted elementary school students. The subjects in this study were 135 gifted elementary students belonged to gifted education centers or gifted classes and 91 ordinary elementary students. An overexcitability test and a social self-concept test were conducted to the subjects, and the collected data were analyzed by SPSS. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the score of the science-gifted was significantly higher than that of the ordinary students in all sub-domain of OE (psychomotor OE, sensual OE, emotional OE, intellectual OE, emotional OE) and social self-concept. Second, the science-gifted students who attended gifted education centers and community gifted classes scored significantly higher than the ordinary students in overexcitability. Based on conclusions, implications for teaching the science-gifted were discussed.

Korean Middle School Students' Perceptions as Global Citizens of Socioscientific Issues (과학과 관련된 사회.윤리적 문제(SSI)의 맥락에 따른 중학생들의 인성적 태도와 가치관 분석)

  • This study investigates Korean middle school students' perceptions as global citizens (i.e. ecological worldview, social and moral compassion, and socioscientific accountability) of Socioscientific Issues (SSI). We developed questionnaires that consisted of 20 Likert-type items to gauge their preceptions of the three different SSI contexts (i.e. nuclear power generation, bio-technology, climate change), and administered them to 225 9th grade students in Seoul. The results revealed that participants showed relatively high scores for ecological worldview but scored low on social and moral compassion across the SSI contexts. In addition, participants presented much higher scores for ecological worldview and socioscientific accountability regarding the issues of climate change. The participant responses indicated that they perceived more inter-connectedness with the environment and felt the responsibility of promoting sustainable development more to prevent further devastation in the context of climate change compared to nuclear power generation or biotechnology.

Development of Elementary School Science Instructional Program for Nurturing Creativity - 2. Development and Implementation - (창의력 계발을 위한 자연과 교수 학습 자료 개발 - 2. 개발과 적용 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the elementary school science instructional material for nurturing students' creativity and to analyze the effects of this material on the changes of students' creativity. This material was composed of student's worksheet and a teacher's guidebook, in which are relevant to the elements of creativity and creative activities that can be applied to elementary science curriculum of 5th and 6th grades. Student's worksheets include various creative activities: imagination, guided imagery, experimental activity, mind mapping as wrap-up, and 'let's think' as an extended activity, game, puzzle, making a cartoon, to be, role playing, and so on. These materials were applied to 5th grade science class, 156 students. They were divided into two groups: the treatment group to which developed material was applied and the control group which was a traditional lecture-centered class. After this material had been applied for 3 months, students of both groups took a test of creativity. Interviews and observation were also carried out with three level groups (higher, medium and lower level) which were divided within the treatment group based on their creativity score. The results of this study were as follows: The treatment group showed higher score on creativity than that of control group(p<0.01). In the result of interviews and observation, the students of the higher and the medium level accomplished their tasks by themselves better than those on lower level.All of them took an interest in visual activity. In a wrapping-up step, the higher level students made mind map more systematically and the medium students improved as time goes on, but low level students feel constrained. In totally, they used various expression methods and were interested in making drawings and cartoons creatively.
