A Study on the Mechanical Characteristics and Waterproof Performance of Impermeable Asphalt Pavement Materials (불투수성 아스팔트 포장재료의 방수기능과 역학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents features of impermeable asphalt pavement material that uses thermoplastic GMA-based polymer(SIS, Stylene Isoprene Stylene) to improve the waterproof performance. Furthermore, as part of this study, the aerodynamic characteristics of the asphalt paving materials, using the newly suggested thermoplastic polymer, are identified through experiments. In the experiment, the aerodynamic characteristics were analyzed by testing on stability, flow values, porosity, dynamic stability, tensile strength ratio and skid resistance in accordance with KS standard and ASTM standard.

  • Poor water-proofing integrity is related to many factors : site procedure, workmanship, weather. substrate conditions, installation(including asphalt application) conditions. The evaluation of adhesive properties tested by concrete surface moisture and asphalt application was based on laboratory test and observations. This report describes the pull-off test results of waterproofing systems currently used for installing and reparing for concrete bridge decks. The test results showed that the moisture condition fully affected the adhesive properties of sheet membranes and sealer but partially for liquid membranes.

  • This study is analyzed about the factor of adhesive strength characteristics, curing time, asphalt application, test temperature which are liquid waterproofing membrane of rubber-asphalt and chloroprene-rubber type for concrete bridge deck. According to the results, curing time is shorter, adhesive strength is less in chloroprene-rubber type. And also chloroprene-rubber and rubber-asphalt type are showed high adhesive strength in low temperature.

  • The comprehensive performance of the water-proofing materials which are sealer, liquid and preformed membranes were investigated as basic experimental data for guide line of field workers. The water-proofing performance, shear strength and bond strength were tested under the ambient temperature of $20^{\cire}C$ and after 60 cycles of freezing and thawing ($-17.8^{\cire}C$~$4^{\cire}C$, 6cycle/day). The performance includes workability, permeability, cost and the influence of water-proofing materials to environment.

  • The waterproofing system's performance is known to show a determining by complex interaction of material factors, design details, and the qualify of construction, and the waterproofing integrity of waterproofing membranes is determined by the bond to the deck and the amount of damage to the waterproofing membrane. In this research, the basic properties of waterproofing membranes on market and the tensile adhesive characteristics of waterproofing systems of concrete bridge deck have also been investigated in the view of the damages frequently reported from job site. As a results of tensile adhesive strength of waterproofing system, tensile strength is decrease with surface moisture contents except for inorganic-elastomeric liquid waterproofing membrane, and increase with strength of deck slab. Also tensile adhesive strength is generally increase in case of moisture curing of specimen because of pore structure and surface leveling. The after asphalt concrete paving tends to increase more than before those. The results of the liquid waterproofing membranes are upside-down, and the more concrete has strength, the more strength of tensile adhesive increase. The ambient temperature and the rolling temperature of asphalt concrete when application of the waterproofing membrane has considerable influence on the performance of waterproofing system.

  • This study focuses on evaluating the applicability of an acryl based polymer concrete to the thin bridge deck pavements. The acryl concrete developed in this study is composed of Methyl Methacrylate(MMA) resin, benzol peroxide and fillers. To study the effects of the types and amounts of the components on the physical characteristics of the acryl concrete, viscosity, compressive strength and bending tests were conducted. The optimum mixture design was then determined based on the testing results. Several different types of laboratory tests, such as water and chlorine ion penetration tests, shrinkage and thermal coefficients tests, and tensile bonding strength tests were performed for the optimum acryl concrete and conventional cement concrete. The testing results show that water and chroline ion resistance, bonding strength between acryl and cement concrete and crack resistance of the acryl concrete is better than those of the conventional cement concrete. There are shortcomings that the conventional acryl concrete has a higher shrinkage and thermal coefficients. However, it was confirmed that to use newly developed rubberized MMA resin in this study reduces the crack resistance with substantially increased ductility.

  • The waterproofing systems of concrete bridge deck are installed under the complex circumstances, such as traffic loading, weather, and the condition of the deck concrete. For assuring the effectiveness of waterproofing system, the materials and the construction method and timing ought to be suitably selected with the procedures of waterproofing and the system has to ensure the economical performances. First of all, we discussed whether the quality and performance criteria for highway bridge deck are resonable or not through the investigation of domestic and foreign criteria. The basic properties of waterproofing membranes on market and the performance of waterproofing systems of concrete bridge deck have also been investigated in the view of the damages frequently reported from job site. In this way, the causes and measures of damages, the guidelines of design, construction, quality control, and maintenance, the test methods and criteria of membranes and waterproofing system, are proposed.
