The optical biosensor using the electrically controlled release of reactive reagent is developed for the detection of peroxide. Rapid degradation of polymer complex of PEOx and PMAA occurs as the applied current increases and thus released amount of HPA increases. The degradation velocity of polymer and the amount of HPA released are linearly proportional to the applied current. Peroxide is reacted with the released reagent by peroxidase and then the product, a fluorescent dimer DBDA, is formed. The monochromic light from light source (150W Xe arc ramp) excites the DBDA and the excited light is transmitted through an optical fiber to be detected by a photodiode array. The change of fluorescence intensity is related to the change of peroxide concentration. The peroxidase is entrapped in Ca-alginate get on the inner surface. The biosensor has the linear signal range of 0.025mM-10.mM peroxide. By applying the step function of peroxide, reproducibility of biosensor has been investigated. The mathematical model is constructed by the combination of enzyme kinetics with reactor flow model. Good agreement is obtained between the experimental result and model prediction in the sensor signal.

This review paper deals with materials, classification, and a current article investigation on smart textile sensors for wearable vital signs monitoring (WVSM). Smart textile sensors can lose electrical conductivity during vital signs monitoring when applying them to clothing. Because they should have to endure severe conditions (bending, folding, and distortion) when wearing. Imparting electrical conductivity for application is a critical consideration when manufacturing smart textile sensors. Smart textile sensors fabricate by utilizing electro-conductive materials such as metals, allotrope of carbon, and intrinsically conductive polymers (ICPs). It classifies as performance level, fabric structure, intrinsic/extrinsic modification, and sensing mechanism. The classification of smart textile sensors by sensing mechanism includes pressure/force sensors, strain sensors, electrodes, optical sensors, biosensors, and temperature/humidity sensors. In the previous study, pressure/force sensors perform well despite the small capacitance changes of 1-2 pF. Strain sensors work reliably at 1 ㏀/cm or lower. Electrodes require an electrical resistance of less than 10 Ω/cm. Optical sensors using plastic optical fibers (POF) coupled with light sources need light in-coupling efficiency values that are over 40%. Biosensors can quantify by wicking rate and/or colorimetry as the reactivity between the bioreceptor and transducer. Temperature/humidity sensors require actuating triggers that show the flap opening of shape memory polymer or with a color-changing time of thermochromic pigment lower than 17 seconds.
The optimization of the specifications of vertical silicon on insulator (SOI) slot optical waveguides suitable for integrated-optical biochemical sensors was performed through computational analysis of the confinement factor of the guided mode distributed in the slot in addition to analytical examination of the TE mode. The optimized specifications were confirmed based on sensitivity in terms of the change in the refractive index of the biochemical analyte. When the slot width, rail width, and height were set to 120 nm, 200 nm, and 320 nm, respectively, the confinement factor was evaluated to be about 56% and the sensitivity was at least 0.9 [RIU/nm].
The effects of ring radius and coupling spacing on the free spectral range (FSR), full width at half maximum (FWHM), quality factor, and sensitivity of single-channel and add-drop channel slot ring resonators were systematically investigated using FIMMPROP and PICWAVE numerical software. The single-channel ring resonator exhibited better characteristics, namely, a wider FSR and narrower FWHM compared with the add-drop structure; thus, it was evaluated to be more suitable for biochemical sensors. The FSR, FWHM, quality factor, and sensitivity for a single channel ring resonator with a radius of 59.4 ㎛ and coupling gap of 0.5 ㎛ were 2.4 nm, 0.087 nm, 17677, and 550 [nm/RIU], respectively.
Label-free optical methods for the monitoring of interactions between biological molecules have become increasingly popular within the last decade. A rising number of publications have demonstrated the benefits of direct biomolecular interaction analysis(BIA) for biology and biochemistry, such as antigen-antibody Interactions, receptor-ligand interactions, protein-DNA, DNA- intercalator, and DNA-DNA interactions. This article gives an overview of the historical development, principle and application of label-free optical biosensor to examine the functional characteristics of biospecific interaction, such as kinetics, affinity, and binding position of biomolecular between an immobilized species at the transducer surface and its dissolved binding partner.

We propose a novel ring structure based on the stadium-shaped ring resonator (SSRR) with dual photonic crystal microcavity (DPCM) for biosensor and analyzed the sensing characteristics. The Q-factor of the photonic crystal microcavity (PCM) can be significantly enhanced when the PCM or DPCM has the same resonance condition as the SSRR. The simulation results show that the Q-factor of the SRR with DPCM was increased by three times in comparison with single PCM structure. We also defined a mutual interference between two PCMs. Assuming a detectable spectral resolution of 10 picometers, a refractive index resolution of $3.03\times10-5$ can be measured on the SSRR-DPCM.

A simple electric circuit of an infrared photodiode electrode (IPDE) was utilized to monitor iron using square-wave (SW) anodic stripping voltammetry (SV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The optimum analytical conditions were determined and were compared with those of common working electrodes. The comparison showed that CV is more sensitive and convenient to use than the common voltammetry methods. At the optimized conditions, the working ranges of 0.1- to 0.8- and 0.85- to 6.0 mg/L iron was obtained. Relative standard deviation of 15 measurements of iron (0.4 mg/L) was 0.09%. The analytical detection limit was found to be $80{\pm}0.6ug/L$, which was applied to iron in waste water.

A highly sensitive refractive index bio-sensor based on grating-assisted strip directional coupler (GASDC) is proposed. The sensor is designed using two asymmetric strip waveguides with a top-loaded grating structure in one of the waveguides. Maximum light couples from one waveguide to the other at the resonance wavelength satisfying phase-matching condition (PMC), and it shows that the change in phase-matching condition with the change in refractive index of the analyte medium in the cover region can be used as a measure of the sensitivity. The proposed sensor will be an on-chip device with a high refractive index sensitivity, and the sensor configuration offers a low propagation loss, thereby enhancing the sensitivity. Furthermore, variation of the sensitivity with the waveguide parameters of sensor is evaluated to optimize the design.

We optimized the Si(substrate)/$SiO_2$(cladding)/$Si_3N_4$(antiresonant cladding)/$SiO_2$(core)/air multi-layers rib-optical waveguides of antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide (ARROW) for integrated optical biosensor structure utilizing beam propagation method (BPM). Thickness of anti-resonant cladding was derived to minimize the propagation loss and leaky field mode deeply related with evanescent mode was theoretically derived. Depth, width, refractive index and cladding thickness of anti-resonant cladding were numerically calculated into 2.3${\mu}m$, 5${\mu}m$, 1.488, and 0.11${\mu}m$ respectively to minimize propagation loss using the BPM simulation tool. Finally one- and two-dimensional propagation characteristics of ARROW was confirmed.
