  • In order to obtain thinner and brighter backlight units (BLU), we simulated a new-type backlight unit. A micro-lens array sheet was formed on the upper plane of the light guide plate (LGP) comprising the backlight unit. Also, in order to match with the LGP, we simulated a functional optical sheet. The conventional BLU uses one LGP and four optical sheets, but we simulated a BLU that uses one optical sheet. Simulation results have revealed that our BLU can achieve the same luminance and 30% better view angle as compared with conventional ones.

• A complete modeling of erbium-doped Bismuth-oxide fibers with a high doping concentration is presented. A 6-level amplifier system that incorporated clustering-induced concentration quenching, cooperative upconversion, pump excited state absorption (ESA), and signal ESA, was adopted for the modeling. The accuracy of the modeling was verified by comparing the calculated gain and noise figure with experimentally obtained ones.

  • We present a numerical model which enables to analyze $1.47mu$m amplification band characteristics for thulium doped fluoride fiber amplifiers. We focused on upconversion pumping scheme, thus many transitions affecting $1.47mu$m band amplification was considered simultaneously. Backward propagating waves and transverse mode were also considered in the model. The parameters for modeling were then acquired using published experimental data and related theories such as Judd-Ofelt theory for radiative transition, empirical energy gap law for non-radiative transition, and McCumber relations for cross-sections. The simulation showed well-matched results with experiment and internal dynamics. amics.

  • The spectroscopic ellipsometric constants are analyzed to determine the thickness and the complex refractive index of a film coated on a semi-transparent substrate, with the reflection from the backside of the substrate properly considered. Expressions representing the effect of the backside reflection on ellipsometric constants are derived using the thickness and the complex refractive index of the substrate. The thickness and the complex refractive of an ITO thin film coated on a glass substrate are obtained by using this method. The results agree quite well with the ones obtained by following the conventional modeling procedure where the backside reflection is neglected during ellipsometric measurement and analysis.

  • This paper presents irradiance distribution model of light radiated from a step-index multimode optical fiber. The model is important in analysis of displacement response characteristics for intensity modulation type optical fiber sensors. The induced model was verified by experimental results. And the displacement response analysis result induced by using the irradiance distribution model was verified by experimental results and compared with using existing irradiance distribution models such as the constant model or the gaussian model. The experiment has better agreement with the analysis result using the induced model in this study than with the others models.

  • We discussed the design of lens module schematic eyes equivalent to finite model eyes, which are used to model the human eye based on spherical aberration and Stiles-Crowford effect. The optical system for head mounted display (HMD) is designed and evaluated using lens module schematic eyes. In addition to a compact HMD system, an optical system with high Performance is required. To satisfy these requirements, we used diffractive optical elements and aspheric surfaces so that the color and mono-chromatic aberrations were corrected. The optical system for HMD is composed of 0.47 inch micro-display of SVGA grade with 480,000 pixels, a plastic hybrid lens for the virtual image, and the lens module schematic eyes. The designed optical system fulfills the current specifications of HMD: such as, EFL of 31.25 mm, FOV of 24H$\times$18V$\times$30D degrees, and overall length of 59.1 mm. As a result, we could design an optical system useful for HMD; the system is expected to be comfortable while the user wears it.

  • Adaptive optics (AO) systems compensate for atmospheric disturbance, especially phase distortion, by introducing counter-wavefront deformation calculated from real-time wavefront sensing or prediction. Because AO system implementations are time-consuming and costly, it is highly desirable to estimate the system's performance during the development of the AO system or its parts. Among several techniques, we mostly apply statistical analysis, computational simulation, and optical-bench tests. Statistical analysis estimates performance based on the sum of performance variances due to all design parameters, but ignores any correlation between them. Computational simulation models every part of an adaptive optics system, including atmospheric disturbance and a closed loop between wavefront sensor and deformable mirror, as close as possible to reality, but there are still some differences between simulation models and reality. The optical-bench test implements an almost identical AO system on an optical bench, to confirm the predictions of the previous methods. We are currently developing an AO system for a 1.6-m ground telescope using a deformable mirror that was recently developed in South Korea. This paper reports the results of the statistical analysis and computer simulation for the system's design and confirmation. For the analysis, we apply the Strehl ratio as the performance criterion, and the median seeing conditions at the Bohyun observatory in Korea. The statistical analysis predicts a Strehl ratio of 0.31. The simulation method similarly reports a slightly larger value of 0.32. During the study, the simulation method exhibits run-to-run variation due to the random nature of atmospheric disturbance, which converges when the simulation time is longer than 0.9 seconds, i.e., approximately 240 times the critical time constant of the applied atmospheric disturbance.

  • Prothrombin Time (PT) is used as a measure of blood coagulation time. An optical analysis of the signal generating mechanism is described here for the reflection-type arrangement. Thromboplastin added into serum or whole blood initiates the coagulation process. We added a sufficient amount of magnetic particles into the sample before adding thromboplastin and subjected the mixture to a rotating magnetic field. The laser light gets reflected in a periodically modulated fashion with respect to the magnetic field rotation. Analysis of this decaying modulation could produce a reasonable coagulation time. We also introduce a simulation model to explain the signal generating mechanism using LightTools.$^{TM}$
