  • In general, dose rates for a monoenergetic gamma emitter uniformly distributed in an infinite cloud have been calulated by using the monoenergetic point-isotorpic source kernel technique. The most serious limitation on use of the kernel technique is subjected to the fact that it estimates the dose only at the surface of body. As a result, an alternative method is presented in which estimates of dose rate for immersion in a radioactive cloud are resulted from the scattered photon spectra incident on the surface of body. The results are in excellent agreement with other's. Work is currently in progress to apply these results to immersion dose problems associated with absorbed dose distribution in the MIRD phatom.

  • Gas is an energy source widely used in general households and industrial sites, and is also a process material widely used in petrochemical and semiconductor processes. However, while it is easy to use, it can cause large-scale human damage due to leakage, explosion, and human inhalation. Therefore, a gas facility safety management solution that can be safely used at home and industrial sites is essential. In particular, the need to develop advanced gas safety solutions is emerging as gas facilities are aging. In this paper, a technology was developed to measure the presence and concentration of gas leaks from a distance by irradiating photons, the minimum energy unit that can no longer be divided into gas facilities, and analyzing the number of reflected photons. This overcomes technical limitations such as short detection distance and inability to detect fine leaks, which are the limitations of conventional electric/chemical gas sensors or infrared-based gas leak detectors.

  • Many researchers worldwide have been making a lot of effort to find sustainable clean energy source to replace the current fossil fuels. However, solar energy is considered as the ultimate energy solution to supply the world total power consumption. Light can be used for lighting, heating, wired and wireless communications, etc. Moreover, even light-driven motors which can directly convert optical energy into kinetic energy are studied recently. In this paper, we analyze optical energy delivery through multi-core optical fibers. Our estimation shows that an optical power of 2 kW can be transmitted through a multi-core fiber and an optical power of >10 MW can be transmitted through a bundle of optical fibers with a diameter of several centimeters. It seems competitive compared with the electric power delivery through a copper cable.

  • The purpose of this study is to calculate correction factors for energy dependence of a nanoDotdosimeter to measure patient's skin dose in diagnostic radiography. The correction factors were calculated by using the values of mean energy for the RQR standard radiation qualities of IEC publicated by Rosado et al. and the energy response graph of dosimeter relative X-ray on phantom calibration provided by landaur corporation. Results showed the correction factors of 1-1.33 over the tube voltage range of 40-50 kVp. Acquired correction factors are considered to be useful in the clinics for the measurement of accurate skin dose at each tube voltage.

  • Since the solar radiation is the main input for sizing any solar photovoltaic system, it will be necessary to understand and evaluate the solar radiation data. The works presented here is the analysis of solar radiation data for East-North Asia areas. The data utilized in the analysis consist of the global radiation on horizontal surface, measured at 2 different stations during 3 years for the period from 2002 to 2004 and estimated using satellite at 27 different stations over the China and Mongolia. Also the measured data has been collected at 16 different stations all of the South Korea and estimated using satellite at 12 different stations over the North Korea from 1982 to 2005. The Result of analysis shows that the annual-average daily global radiation on the horizontal surface is 3.57 $MJ/m^2$. We conclude, based on the analysis, that East-North Asia areas have sufficient solar energy resources for the photovoltaic power generation system.

  • Knowledge of the solar radiation components are essential for modeling many solar photovoltaic systems. This is particularly the case for applications that concentrate the incident energy to attain high photo-dynamic efficiency achievable only at the higher intensities. In order to estimate the performance of concentrating PV systems, it is necessary to know the intensity of the beam radiation, as only this component can be concentrated. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has began collecting solar radiation component data since August, 1996. KIER's component data will be extensively used by concentrating PV system users or designers as well as by research institutes.

  • In this study, the discrete ordinates method which has been widely used in the solution of neutron transport equation is applied to the solution of the time dependent radiative transfer equation. The self-adjoint form of the second order radiation intensity equation is used to enhance the stability of the solution, and a new multi-step linearization method is developed to avoid the nonlinearity in the material temperature equation. This new solution method is applied to the well known Marshak wave problem, and the numerical result is compared with that of the conventional Monte-Carlo method.

  • Characteristics of element responses of Panasonic UD802 personnel dosimeters in the X, ${\beta}$, ${\gamma}$, ${\gamma}/X$, ${\gamma}/{\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$/neutron mixed fields were assessed. A dose-response algorithm has been developed to decide the high probability of a radiation type and energy by using the distribution in all six ratios of the multi-element TLD. To calculate the 4-element response factors and ratios between the elements of the Panasonic TLDs in the X, $\beta$, and $\gamma$ radiation fields, Panasonic’s UD802 TLDs were irradiated with KINS’s reference irradiation facility. In the photon radiation field, this study confirms that element-3 (E3) and element-4 (E4) of the Panasonic TLDs show energy dependent both in low- and intermediate-energy range, while element-1 (E1) and element-2 (E2) show little energy dependency in the entire whole range. The algorithm, which was developed in this study, was applied to the Panasonic personnel dosimetry system with UD716AGL reader and UD802 TLDs. Performance tests of the algorithm developed was conducted according to the standards and criteria recommended in the ANSI N13.11. The sum of biases and standard deviations was less than 0.232. The values of biases and standard deviations are distributed within a triangle of a lateral value of 0.3 in the ordinate and abscissa, With the above algorithm, Panasonic TLDs satisfactorily perform optimum dose assessment even under an abnormal response of the TLD elements to the energy imparted. This algorithm can be applied to a more rigorous dose assessment by distinguishing an unexpected dose from the planned dose for the most practical purposes, and is useful in conducting an effective personnel dose control program.

  • Monte Carlo simulations are widely used as the most accurate technique for dose calculation in radiation therapy. In this paper, the GATE6(Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission ver.6) code was employed to calculate the dosimetric performance of the photon beams from a linear accelerator(LINAC). The treatment head of a Varian 21EX Clinac was modeled including the major geometric structures within the beam path such as a target, a primary collimator, a flattening filter, a ion chamber, and jaws. The 6 MV photon spectra were characterized in a standard $10{\times}10cm^2$ field at 100 cm source-to-surface distance(SSD) and subsequent dose estimations were made in a water phantom. The measurements of percentage depth dose and dose profiles were performed with 3D water phantom and the simulated data was compared to measured reference data. The simulated results agreed very well with the measured data. It has been found that the GATE6 code is an effective tool for dose optimization in radiotherapy applications.
