  • Mineral medicines are single or mixtures of minerals and rocks which have been used to treat disease. Recently, their application has been increased by emphasizing the physical properies of the medicines, in addition to their chemical properies. In this study, mineralogical, chemical, spectroscopic and magnetic properties were measured using X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, Ff-Infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass magnetic susceptibility. Experiments were done using these properties to evaluate application of traditional mineral medicines such as Yanggiseok, Yeonok and Eumgiseok. Mineralogical study proves that Yanggiseok, generally known as tremolite, consists of actinolite. Yeonok for medical usage mostly consists of fine grained tremolite. Eumgiseok is mainly composed of vermiculite and minor kaolinite and halloysite. Yeonok and Yanggiseok, belong to the amphibole group among inosilicates and both have similar emission power properties. The intensity of emission power, calculated from FT-IR measurements, follows in the order of Yeonok, Yanggiseok and Eumgiseok at 40$^{\circ}$C and Yanggiseok, Yeonok and Eumgiseok in such order at 150$^{\circ}$C. As a result of NMR analysis after 20 days in distilled water, the three mineral medicines decreased in the following order; Eumgiseok, Yanggiseok and Yeonok. However, the same minerals decreased in the order of Eumgiseok, Yeonok and Yanggiseok after 80 days. In response temperature, magnetic susceptibility of Yanggiseok and Eumgiseok systematically increased by heating to 25$^{\circ}$C, 100$^{\circ}$C and 700$^{\circ}$C. Magnetic susceptibility of Yeonok shows a decreasing pattern due to heating.

  • This paper reports on the monitoring results of some heavy metals (Pb, Cd, As and Hg) in oriental mineral medicines. Levels of Pb, Cd and As were determined using the acid digestion method and ICP-MS. Hg levels were determined using the gold amalgamation method and Automatic mercury analyzer (AMA). The results indicated that, in the case of Pb, 25.81% (24 cases) of the samples were over MRL (5 mg/kg). Pb levels in Calamina, Pumex, and Cinnabaris exceeded MRL (5 mg/kg). In the case of Cd, 9.68% (17cases) of the samples were over MRL (0.3 mg/kg). Cd levels in Calamina, Pumex and Cinnabaris were exceeded MRL (0.3 mg/kg). In case of As, 24.73% (23 cases) of samples exceeded MRL (3 mg/kg). As levels in Calamina, Lithargyrum, Vermilionum, Cinnabaris and Chalcocitum exceeded MRL (3 mg/kg). In the case of Hg, it was shown that the 76.34% (78 cases) of the samples exceeded MRL (0.2 mg/kg). Hg levels in almost all the samples exceeded MRL (0.2 mg/kg). These results led us to recommend that the domestic commercial law to be legislated to ensure the quality estimation and safety of oriental mineral medicines.

  • X-ray diffraction analysis of Yung-Sa, an inorganic chinese drug in Korea, revealed the following: 1. "Yung-Sa" is red mercuric sulfide crystal (Vormillion) which is cinnabar type of hexagonal system. 2. It is accurate to call "Yung-Sa" synthetic red mercuric sulfide. 3. "Chung-Sa-Du" is mixture of crystals of cinnabar and meta-cinnabar types.

  • studied on the physicochemistrical property of the clean active water depositting on the ceramic stone by the mineral-Oriental medicine. The results are as follows. The cluster of the clean active water is observed 53-66.5㎐ for contral water. The clean active water is observed 7.2 ph and 1.3330 refractive index for contral water. In the chemical experimental test by ICP, the clean active water is observed 102℃ in boiling point and 4.8㎎/100g V.E for 0㎎g/100g of contral water. In the antibiotic experimentation, an anion, the dimintion index of bacilli, radiation degree and radiate energy of the clean active water increased for contral water. And in the deodorization experimentation, the clean active water is observed 95% deodorization index.

  • Modern pharmaceutical scientists and medicinal chemists have shown only sporadic interest in mineral drugs of oriental medicine, although the use of minerals in medicine dates from early ancient cultures. The mineral, until recently, has been relatively neglected by the natural product and medicinal chemists. At this moment in time it is appropriate to review briefly the status of mineral oriental drugs in Korea, and eighty items of mineral drugs were listed in this review. This review is also concerned with those references, classic or current, pertaining to application, origin, and constituent of those mineral drugs. It is the aim of this review to facilitate presentation of useful informations in an attempt to entice the natural product and medicinal chemists to seek rediscovery and further application of mineral oriental drugs in Korea.

  • As a part of series of "Studies on Inorganic Chinese Drugs in Korea" four arsenic mineral Chinese drugs were analyzed by emission spectrographic method, and also were studied crystallographically by X-ray diffraction method. The following results were revealed: 1) Tang-shin-suk was not a Native arsenic but a Arsenolite which containing 94% of $As_{2}O_{3}$, 2) Toh-shin-suk was Crade Aluminum silicate 3) Woong-whang was a Realgar $As_{2}S_{2}$, 4) Yeh-suk was a Ca-Al-Silicate which was mixed with .alpha.-quartz contaminated by Iron compound and trace amount of Arsenic. It was not verified that the presence of Arsenopyrite FeAsS which has been believed as a main component of Yeh-suk by a Japanese author Wakimizu, nor the presence of Arsenolite which was reported by Masutomi.

  • We studied on the production of the ceramic by the mineral-Oriental medicine and the property of the clean active water depositting on the ceramic stone. The results are as follows: We properly mixed of maifanshi, mica, ochre, and added to a small amount cinnabar, and therefore formed the ceramic stone. By the plasticity process and the irradiating magnetic force recovered the disappeared a part of constitutent elements. The recovered effects were become higher the freshness, maintenance, deodoriztion, clean water. As well as having the ability on capture of the notoxious heavy metal on human. The ceramic powder were mixed proper dose maifanshi, mica. And the powder had ionization, absorption, adhesion by the plasticity process and magnetic force. The clean active water of depositting on the ceramic stone during 24hours were observed significant the content of micro element, dissolved oxygen, abstraction on Herbs.
