The female moths of Lepidoptera comprising over 1,000,000 described species possess long-chain unsaturated alcohols or esters as the typical structure of potential sex attractants. In this experiment, various stereoisomers of $C_{16}-unsaturated$ acetates were synthesized for potential sex attractants; e.g., $CH_3(CH_2)_mCH=CH(CH_2)_nOR$ (m=0-12, n=1-13, R=H and $-COCH_3$). Seventeen acetates were spectrometrically examined so that the data would provide a ready catalog of gas chromatography and mass spectrometric data for comparison with natural insect sex attractants. Exclusively cis and trans isomers were obtained by the catalytic and chemical reduction methods, respectively. Commercially available $CH_3(CH_2)_mBr,\;CH_3(CH_2)_mC{\equiv}CH,\;HC{\equiv}C(CH_2)_nOH\;and\;HO(CH_2)_n\;OH$ were used for the synthetic starting material. 1-Alkynes, $CH_3(CH_2)_m\;C{\equiv}CH$ exceeding nine methylene groups did not condense with alkyl dihalides. The yield of coupling products was gradually decreased with increasing the molecular weight of diols. In the coupling reaction of $BrCH_2CH_2$ OTHP with acetylene gas, the tetrahydropyranyl ether of bromohydrin produced undesirable elimination product. In this experiment, it seems that p-toluenesulfonic acid is greatly favoured hydrolyzing agent over dilute sulfuric acid in the hydrolysis of the tetrahydropyranyl ether of long-chain alkynols.

In this paper, we have studied on the possibilities of the biomaterial detection using single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) based on interdigital capacitors. For the four different configurations, such as interdigital capacitor, SWNT in the $5\;{\mu}m$ gap interdigital capacitor, biotinlated SWNT, and biotin and sreptavidin immobilization cases, the resonant frequency has been measured as 10.02 GHz, 11.02 GHz, 10.82 GHz, and 10.22 GHz, respectively. Assuming that the resonant frequency reflects the capacitance changes due to binding of two-different permittivity biomaterials, we have suggested an equivalent circuit model based on measured results, confirming the capacitance changes. For biotinlated SWNT and biotin-streptavidin immobilization cases, the capacitances are $C_b=0.55\;pF$ and $C_s=0.95\;pF$. In this work, we experimentally demonstrated that the specific biomaterial binding causes the capacitance change and therefore this gives rise to resonant frequency. In conclusion, we confirmed the sufficient possibility as CNT biosensor because an analyte biomaterial(streptavidin) binding arouses a considerable resonant frequency change.

A series of organic-inorganic composite membranes from poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) graft copolymer electrolyte and heteropolyacid (HPA) were prepared for proton conducting membranes. First, poly(vinyl chloride)-g-poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PVC-g-PSSA) was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using direct initiation of the secondary chlorines of PVC. HPA nanoparticles were then incorporated into the PVC-g-PSSA graft copolymer though the hydrogen bonding interactions, as confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. The proton conductivity of the composite membranes increased from 0.049 to 0.068 S/cm at room temperature with HPA contents up to 0.3 weight traction of HPA, presumably due to both the intrinsic conductivity of HPA particles and the enhanced acidity of the sulfonic acid of the graft copolymer. The water uptake decreased from 130 to 84% with the increase of HPA contents up to 0.45 of HPA weight traction, resulting from the decrease in number of water absorption sites due to hydrogen bonding interaction between the HPA particles and the polymer matrix. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated the enhancement of thermal stabilities of the composite membranes with increasing concentration of HPA.

Proper intracellular transport is essential for normal cell function. Intracellular transport is mediated by microtubule-dependent molecular motor proteins, as well as kinesin and cytoplasmic dynein, which move their cargo along long, microtubule tracks in cells. Kinesins are ATP-dependent plus-end-directed motor proteins in the intracellular transport of organelles, vesicles, RNA complexes, and protein complexes. The mislocalization of these different types of cargo has been linked to cell dysfunction and degeneration. The cargo transport of kinesins can be described by the following steps: binding to the appropriate cargo and/or adaptor proteins, activation of the kinesin's motility and movement along the microtubule, and the release of the cargo at the correct destination. Recently, several studies have revealed the mechanisms for the regulation of kinesin motor activity, including cargo loading and unloading. Intracellular cargo transport is also modulated by adaptor proteins, which link the kinesins to their cargo. The regulatory proteins, which include protein kinases and phosphatases, regulate kinesin motor activity directly through the phosphorylation or dephosphorylation of kinesins and indirectly through the modification of adaptor proteins, such as c-Jun NH-terminal kinase-interacting proteins, or of the microtubule network. These findings lay the groundwork for understanding how kinesins are differentially engaged in intracellular cargo transport. In addition, understanding the regulatory mechanisms of each kinesin is an area of key interest within cell biology and neurophysiology. In this study, we reviewed kinesins' regulation proteins and discuss how their regulation affects cargo recognition and transport.

This study is performed to analyze the effects of CASB by applying the superplasticizer combined CASB on the ultra high strength mortar and concrete that uses different mineral admixture depending on whether the silica fume was used and the results are summarized below. From the characteristics of Fresh mortar and concrete, the fluidity was lower in B2-CASB than B2-PC from the mixing of CASB and based on the viscosity of the mortar and concrete in the binary proportion but in the ternary proportion, B3-CASB showed a larger fluidity than B3-PC because of a reduction in the restriction level due to the effects of an improvement of particle size distribution. The compression strength was higher in ternary proportion than in binary proportion and higher in CASB than in PC from the characteristics of hardening mortar and concrete and this is analyzed as a result of increased minuteness from the calcium silicate hydrates produced from the pozzolan reaction of a mineral admixture, SF, and also the charging effects of capillary pore of CASB. Overall, when using the nanomaterial, CASB in combination with a superplasticizer, the fluidity and the strength aspects of the ternary proportion of ultra high strength mortar and concrete with silica fume may be improved to a higher quality.

Traumatic bone cyst (TBC) is an asymptomatic lesion seen most in adolescents. TBC is found incidentally on routine panoramic examinations and appears as a relatively well-demarcated unilocular radiolucency with scalloped margins. Histological examination reveals a vacant cavity of cancellous bone usually unlined or very occasionally lined with a thin connective tissue layer. The lack of lining epithelial membrane is common histological feature. The most affected site is between the mandibular canine and third molar. The involvement of the mandibular symphysis is rare. The etiopathogenesis of the TBC is unclear. TBC is treated with surgical exploration and curettage; new bone is formed in place of the lesion within 6 - 12 months of surgery. Diagnosis of TBC prior to surgical intervention has limitations in most of the cases. Both of our patients were diagnosed through radiological examination and biopsy. Neither patient had a history of trauma. After surgery, the panoramic radiograph and CBCT were used to confirm bone healing.
Grafted tissues were investigated using various microscopic techniques. Pinus thunbergii was used as stock and scion and autografted by cleft graft method. Histochemically, grafting processes can be proceeded by four stages: 1) formation of necrotic layer, 2) proliferation of callus, 3) development of neo-cambium from callus, and 4) restoration of new vascular xylem. Necrotic la yer composed of pectin and lignin was gradually degraded during grafting process and disappeared when new union was formed between stock and scion. A large number of starch and lipid bodies in the cytoplasm were also gradually degraded during grafting process and disappeared at the grafting interface. Nucleus and plasmodesmata were not changed. Bubble-like callus was generated from all living parenchyma cells and from the callus. The tracheary elements differentiated from the callus had either reticulate or pit-like thickenings in the secondary walls with bordered pits. Secondary cell wall thickening occurred toward filing to the void parts between reticulated secondary wall. Tracheids formed in the secondary xylem were short with irregular wall thickness. New secondary xylem cells with swirled shapes, which developed in graft union were oriented horizontally and obliquely to axis of the stem.
This paper proposes methodologies for analyzing the accuracy of the proportional hazards model in predicting consecutive break times of water mains and estimating the time interval for economical water main replacement. By using the survival functions that are based on the proportional hazards models a criterion for the prediction of the consecutive pipe breaks is determined so that the prediction errors are minimized. The criterion to predict pipe break times are determined as the survival probability of 0.70 and only the models for the third through the seventh break are analyzed to be reliable for predicting break times for the case study pipes. Subsequently, the criterion and the estimated lower and upper bound survival functions of consecutive breaks are used in predicting the lower and upper bounds of the 95% confidence interval of future break times of an example water main. Two General Pipe Break Prediction Models(GPBMs) are estimated for an example pipe using the two series of recorded and predicted lower and upper bound break times. The threshold break rate is coupled with the two GPBMs and solved for time to obtain the economical replacement time interval.
Recently, the consumption of mistletoe[Viscum album var. coloratum(Kom.) Ohwi] is increasing because of its good medical effectiveness with the increased concern on the natural medicines and foods. The result obtained from the investigation on the stem tissues of the mistletoe and the oriental chestnut oak, a host plant species, are as follows. Haustorium from the seeds of the mistletoe after their sticking to the branches of the host plant penetrates into the bark where it forms the endophyte system through the active cell division. The endophyte grown in the cambium of the host plant makes the stems and leaves as the outer tissues in a certain time. Even through lignification of the host wood in the branches the oriental chestnut oak was not progressive, its tylosis coas developed partially assembly due to the formation of the endophyte. The stems of the mistletoe consisted of vascular tracheid, selereid, and ray and axial parenchyma, classified as a hardwood without vessels. The vascular tracheids seemed to take a role instead of the vessels in the mistletoe plant from the result that the pits of the vessels in the host branches are linked to the vessel-form tracheid in the mistletoe stems. The constituent ratio of the sclereid cells in the mistletoe stems increased with aging. Furthermore their ratio of the parenchyma cells was higher, which contained the more cell content, compared with the cells of the general woody plant species.
