  • The study aimed to evaluate an activity-oriented extracurricular science program as informal science education through the assessment of opinions of student participants and lead-students and lead-teachers who organized the program. An 'Exciting Science Fair' was designed by science teachers and students and provided for 857 students for two days in early 1998. Students chose a course of science activities designed by different levels of student knowledge and interests. During their own science activity courses, the participating students were grouped as pair of two students and guided and facilitated by lead-students. A survey instrument was developed by researchers and asked respondents' opinions of 121 participating students, 72 lead-students, and 19 lead-teachers to the significance of program goals, degree of goal achievement, and program planning and management system before and after the program. It was found that most student participants, lead-students and lead-teachers satisfied with the efficiency of the program. However, it was recommended that the program should place more emphases on engaging student participants in science activities, strengthening scientific inquiry through activities, and increasing science content related to student daily life. It was also suggested that advertizement of the program be publicized in advance through media, an effect teaching-learning strategy for lead-students be developed, and collaboration among lead-students and lead-teachers be improved.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the types and characteristics of the knowledge constructed by pre-service secondary science teachers. Data included 26 student-teachers' narratives regarding their experiences in teaching high school students who were enrolled in extra-curricular science classes. It was revealed that the pre-service teachers awoke to the importance of subject matter knowledge, and learned it themselves in the situation of their own teaching. Especially their concern about science content knowledge was strongly associated with the matter of didactic transposition of the knowledge. The result also showed that the pre-service teachers constructed knowledge about the relationship with students as well as pedagogical knowledge to help students learn, and that they newly realized the nature of science in the context of teaching science. In addition, the teaching experiences allowed for the student-teachers to develop knowledge of oneself as a teacher and knowledge about science education in schools. It was believed that the knowledge constructed personally by the pre-service teachers from their teaching experiences could be a platform for the development of teacher expertise. Implications of the present study for science teacher education and relevant research were discussed.

  • In this study, we investigated students' behavioral characteristics in the process of and their responses to scientific creativity activities developed based on the three steps of learning model (Park, Park, & Lee, 2008) and scientific creativity model (Park, 2004). Students' responses were obtained by questionnaire, effectiveness of learning materials was explored by comparing students activities before and after the second step, 'Guide', and various characteristic behaviors were obtained through video-recording of their activities. As results, students answered that even though the activities were a little difficult, the activities were nonetheless interesting to them, and they wanted to do the activities more completely, and wanted them in future courses. It was also found that the second step activity was helpful in improving students' divergent thinking. Finally, from the findings about various students' behavioral characteristics, some practical recommendations for more effective teaching of scientific creativity were suggested.

  • Worksheets with various levels are major instructional material in open classroom, but sometimes they have been arbitrarily developed in elementaryschools. Especially, pedagogical elements of science course seem to have been neglected in developing science learning papers. To solve these problems, a model of worksheets was developed considering the contextual nature of science knowledge and educational constructivism. The frame of this model is composed of inquiry skill and context, which are two dimensions of each learning task. The level of each worksheet was determined by the level of inquiry skills and the familiarity of contexts.

  • The communication model has been accepted as the basic research paradigm of cartography since Board(1967) discussed the map/model analogy. In that paradigm, the function of maps was limited to the media of communication, and the functionality of maps was extremely emphasized. Therefore the model could not play its own role under the new environments such as computer, GIS, scientific visualization. Nowadays, the model has been attacked on several grounds and several alternatives have been suggested. Among the objections raised are (1) geographic visualization in which maps are considered as the tool of scientific visualization, (2) the contributions of art which are ignored in the positivist cartographic research, and (3) deconstructionist arguments which deny the scientific epistemology of map as an objective form of knowledge and recognize the textuality of maps including their metaphorical and rhetorical nature. Since a publication by McCormick et al, the scientific visualization based on the powerful computer graphics is used in a wide context. Maps are treated as the tools of scientific visualization and emphasis is on exploration of the geographic data to gain understanding and insight in the geographic visualization processes. The research on geographic visualization have stayed in the early stage of developing the conceptual model and the basic visualization tools. But, it is expected that the geographic or visual thinking which is emphasized in the geographic visualization will contribute the reestablishment of links between cartography and geography. Also, the development of scientific visualization tools and strategies will offer the opportunities to suggest a fresh idea, to synthesize information and develop holistic approaches to geographical problems.
