  • The purpose of this research was to conduct grounded-theory-based explorations on the types of motivation that make pre-service elementary school teachers learn science and on their type-based science-learning processes. One hundred thirty-two pre-service elementary school teachers' motivation types were analyzed, and amongst them, 12 were selected as the subjects to observe their science-learning processes to which grounded theory applied. As a result of analyzing their science-learning motivation types, it was found that the majority belonged to the type "accurators", followed in descending order by the types "directors", "explorers", and "coordinators". Coding various phenomena that appeared in their science-learning processes made it possible to derive 30 categories from them according to the grounded-theory paradigm model elements. Based on such categories derived, analysis could be made on their science-learning process flows by motivation types, according to the grounded-theory paradigm model. For example, the "accurators" were attending science lectures or reading science books to learn science knowledge and how to teach it, from a sense of obligation they took for granted as elementary school teachers. Although their experiences of science-learning processes could not be from pure intentions, due to the teacher certification examination, curriculum, or other environmental factors, they were found to have new perspectives on science with their individual efforts and participations.

  • In this study, the effect of the STS program that was oriented from jurisprudental inquiry model on high school underachievers was investigated. The subjects were 76 high school students. They were divided into two groups, the STS program applied class(treatment group) and the traditional lecture-centered class(control group). The STS program was consisted of three subunits. 'nutrient and health', 'stimulation and reaction' and 'reproduction',of 'life' unit of high school general science. And these 3 subunits consisting of eight contents were lectured over 8 hours. The treatment group showed much better achievement in learning significantly (p<.05) than the control group showing that the STS program affected. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the STS program compatible with achievement level of students, and teaching-learning approaches and learning programs for underachievers.

  • By using the concept of 'Resonance' in benzene which stems from a unit dealing with the carbocyclic compounds which is in a text 'Chemistry I', I developed teaching methods based on the history of science. This study was executed to analyze the effect by applying these methods. Seventy 3rd grade male students, who are attending a high school located in the Pohang area were used in this study. I investigated the level of the relative difficulty and the degree of scholastic achievement from each treatment group and controlled group using the concept of Resonance from the preceeding study. In this study, these 70 students divided into two classes- a traditional lecture group consisting of male 35 student, and a group using the history of chemistry consisting of the remaining 35 student and after a specified period, their scholastic achievement was analyzed. As a result of this study, the treatment group scored much higher (50.143) than the controlled group(25.429) in average score and showed significant difference between two groups. Through this study was based on the history of chemistry, after scientists let them realize the process of improving science attitude, and think like scientists, giving conceptual class can get much more efficiency and durability for learning.

  • This study intends to analyze open-ended inquiry activities of elementary science-gifted students in terms of how similar they are to authentic science inquiry and suggest desirable ways to make more effective programs for the gifted. For this study, we selected a small group with five elementary science-gifted students who had participated in the open inquiry program of summer camp held in the Institute for Science Gifted Education and collected data through recording and video-taping their discussion and performance from planning to coordinating inquiry results. The data was analyzed in terms of epistemological features and cognitive process in authentic science inquiry. The results is as follows. In terms of epistemology, students' inquiry methods were theory laden and they constructed knowledge in collaborative groups. For example, the students often discussed about performing the thought experiment and scientific concept related to inquiry task or their opinion. And in terms of cognitive process, their designing inquiry was similar to authentic science inquiry especially selecting variables, planning procedures, controlling variables, planning measures.

  • This study aims to investigate the problem recognition and clue capture processes of the observation stage in a geological field trip using abductive inquiry. To this end, eight outdoor geological programs were developed in the order of diagnostic evaluation, outdoor geological fieldwork, and review. Six middle-school students participated in these programs The geological field trip was conducted twice, followed by data provision, observation, rule generation, hypothesis generation, and final hypothesis presentation. Outdoor geological fieldwork recordings and student activity sheets were collected and analyzed qualitatively. From these data, three aspects of student observations emerged during the geological fieldwork: The characteristics of each pattern were subdivided into the geological importance of the clues, attention, type of clues, observation characteristics (attention factor), clue utilization, and clue deletion. Here, by combining these results, we propose educational applications that correspond to each aspect.
