  • This study evaluated the effects of maternal food environment on food behavior and hyperactivity of preschoolers. The subjects consisted of 270 children aged 5-6 years and 330 their mother. The food behavior and hyperactivity of the children were measured simultaneously by both children's mother and their teachers using the same checklists. And maternal food environment was performed by self-administered questionnaire. Mother's food value was significantly influenced by their employment status and parenting behavior. but was not affected by the levels of their education and household income. Children's hyperactivity was significant influenced by their sleep status, mother's education level and parenting behavior(p<0.05). A significant difference was noted children's food behavior with the teacher's assessment upon the association with hyperactivity(p<0.05) but was not significantly related to it by mother's checklist. The mother's food value(p<0.001) and food behavior(p<0.05) were significantly related to the their children's food behavior and hyperactivity. These results showed that maternal food environment plays an important role in children's food behavior and hyperactivity.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the associations among attention deficit/hyperactivity, social withdrawal, peer relationships, and depression in early adolescence. Gender differences in the associations were also examined. This study investigated these relationships and the gender differences using structural equation modeling multi-group analysis. The third wave data from Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) of fourth graders were analyzed. The results indicated that attention deficit/hyperactivity had significant effects on depression directly and indirectly through social withdrawal and peer relationships. These results suggest that new programs should be developed to prevent or alleviate depression associated with attention deficit/hyperactivity among adolescents. Specifically, social withdrawal and peer relationships need to be emphasized in planning prevention or intervention programs to promote mental health of adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between food behavior and social competence and hyperactivity among 330 children aged 5-6 years. Social competence and hyperactivity of the children were measured simultaneously by both children´s mothers and their teachers using the same checklists. A significant difference was noted between the teachers´ and the mothers´ assessment upon the association of food behavior with both social competence and hyperactivity (p<0.05). Health status was closely related to only the teacher´s food behavior assessment(p<0.05). Children´s social competence was significantly related with the degree of children´s activity and the degree of hyperactivity was negatively related with their sleep status(p<0.05). The higher the teachers´ assessments on the children´s food behavior were, the higher the children´s social competences were(p<0.05). However, this positive relationship between food behavior and social competence were not observed by the mothers´ assessment. These results indicate that food behavior assessed by the teachers, not by mothers, plays a role in children´s social competence and hyperactivity.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the mediating effects of mothers' depression on the relationships of marital conflict and young children's problem behaviors. Data was collected from 177 young children and their mothers. The results of this study revealed that young children's problem behaviors were significantly positively correlated with mothers' marital conflict and depression. Mothers' marital conflict were also significantly positively correlated with hyperactivity, anxious and aggressive behaviors. Mothers' depression was significantly positively correlated with hyperactivity, anxious and aggressive behaviors. Regression analysis revealed that marital conflict significantly affected their depression. Mothers' depression also significantly affected young children's hyperactivity, anxious and aggressive behaviors. The relationship between marital conflict and young children's problem behaviors was fully mediated by mothers' depression.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the lifestyle factors influencing behavioral problems such as Inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, and internet overuse in elementary and middle school students. Data from 889 elementary school students and 676 middle school students were used and teacher reporting on students' attention deficit and hyperactivity and impulsivity symptoms was also included in the analysis. Lifestyle included opportunities for family interaction, sleep, watching TV, playing Video games, eating breakfast, eating junk food, and private education. As a result of stepwise regression analysis, Video games, junk foods, and family interactions significantly predicted the inattention of elementary and middle school students. Video games, TV, junk foods, and family interactions significantly predicted elementary school students' hyperactivity and impulsivity, but the lifestyle variables hardly accounted for the hyperactivity/impulsivity of middle school students. Video game, and family interactions significantly predicted Internet overuse for both elementary and middle school students. Current study suggest that family interaction opportunities and the use of video games, TV and junk food should be considered to intervene in behavior problems.

  • Using a reliable assessment procedure and according to the severity of hyperactivity, thirty-six clinic-referred outpatients, 6-12 years of age, were given a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity(ADD+H) or without Hyperactivity(ADD-H). Comparisons of behavioral measurement by Conners Rating Scale(CRS) and Home/School Situations Questionnaire(HSQ/SSQ) revealed that the children with ADD+H displayed more pervasive behavior problems at home and school than the children with ADD-H. Also the children with ADD+H were more likely to be delinquent and aggressive compared to the children with ADD-H when using the Child Behavior Check-list(CBCL) for parents Hyperactivity symptom in ADHD is highly correlated with aggression scale on CBCL These finding suggest that ADD+H and ADD-H may differ in clinical disease entity.

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of ADHD based on estimation of ADHD rating scale between mother-teacher and teacher-teacher. In total, 491 mothers and 23 teachers rated 689 5-year-old children on the K-ADHDDS. Descriptive statistics, in addition to independent and paired samples t-test were performed. Overall, the percentages of children with ADHD on the rating scale were 3% in combined type, 7.1-8.6% in predominately hyperactive-impulsive type, and 4.2% in predominately inattentive type. Boys tended to show greater tendency of ADHD than girls’: Overall, ADHD tendency in boys was 1.3 times greater than girls. Specially, 2.3 times more for hyperactivity, 1.4 times more for impulsivity, and 3.4 more for inattention. The correlation between mothers’ and teachers’ ratings were .35 for total, .40 for hyperactivity, .24 for impulsivity, and .28 for inattention, and there were no significant differences. Alternatively teacher and teacher ratings were .71 for total, .70 for hyperactivity, .70 for impulsivity, and .67 for inattention, and there were significant differences in inattention subscale(p < .01).
