  • boiling flow in vertical tube. The multiphase flow model used in this CFD analysis is the two-fluid model in which liquid(water) and gas(vapour) are considered as continuous and dispersed fluids, respectively. A wall boiling model is also used to simulate the subcooled boiling heat transfer at the heated wall boundary. The diameter and heated length of tube are 0.0154 m and 2 m, respectively. The system pressure in tube is 4.5 MPa and the inlet subcooling is 60 K. The near-wall grid size in the non-dimensional wall unit for lqiuid phase ($y^+_{w,l}$) was examined from 101 to 313 at the outlet boundary. The CFD calculations predicted the void distributions as well as the liquid and wall temperatures in tube. The predicted axial variations of the void fraction and the wall temperature are compared with the measured ones. The CFD prediction of the wall temperature is shown to slightly depend on the near-wall grid size but the axial void prediction has somewhat large dependency. The CFD prediction was found to show a better agreement with the measured one for the large near-wall grid, e.g., $y^+_{w,l}$ > 300 at the tube exit.

  • Real quality and axial void fraction distribution of subcooled refrigerant flow is very important to predict the heat transfer rate and pressure drop in the design of refrigerating system. In the subcooled boiling region, the liquid bulk temperature is still below the corresponding saturation temperature. But beyond the net vapor generation point, bubble detachment is occured actively from the vapor layer formed on the wall. A reliable method to predict the vapor fraction from the liquid bulk temperature is suggested in this paper. And also the actual quality of the subcooled R-113 flow is calculated in the range of 261-1239kg/$m^2$s mass velocity and 10-30K subcooling.

  • A new reliable method to prediet the axial vapor fraction distribution from the measured probability density of the liquid bulk temperature is suggested in this paper. And also the actual quality of the subcooled boiling flow is easily calculated from the liquid bulk temperature. When the heat generating rate is reached to the CHF value, the sharp wall temperature increasing by the wall temperature fluctuation is occurred under the CHF condition. This paper presents the simple wall temperature fluctuation model of transition boiling by the repeating process of overheating and quenching, when the coalescent bubble passes slowly near the wall. Experiments for the subcooled R-113 flow are carride-out in the range of(0.9399~4.461)${\times}10^6$kg/$m^2$hr mass velocity and 10~3$0^{\circ}C$ intel subcooling condition.

  • A multiphase CFD analysis is performed to investigate the effect of near-wall grid for simulating a subcooled boiling flow in vertical tube. The multiphase flow model used in this CFD analysis is the two-fluid model in which liquid(water) and vapor(steam) are considered as continuous and dispersed fluids, respectively. A wall boiling model is also used to simulate the subcooled boiling heat transfer at the heated wall boundary. The diameter and heated length of tube are 0.0154 m and 2 m, respectively. The system pressure in tube is 4.5 MPa and the inlet subcooling is 60 K. The near-wall grid size in the non-dimensional wall unit ($y_{w}^{+}$) was examined from 64 to 172 at the outlet boundary. The CFD prediction was found to show a better agreement with the measured one for the large near-wall grid, e.g., $y_{w}^{+}$ > 100.

  • The quenching of steels by water is one of the imprtant problems in the applications of heat treatment, but the fundamental researches by way of theoretical approaches have not been satisfactorily improbed yet. This study aimed at measuring the exact subcooled transient boiling curve for cylindrical specimens and at conducting the analytical researches into the prediction of cooling curves, including the latent heat of phase transformation of steel. Experiments of quenching were made with cylindrical specimens of carbon steel S45C of diameters from 12 to 30 mm and with Cu specimens of 12 mm diameter respectively. The internal temperature of specimens during the quenching process was measured by C-A sheathed thermocouple. The heat fluxes were numerically calculated by the numerical method of inverse heat conduction problem, using the measured inner temperature of specimen as a boundary condition. In case of ${\Delta}T_{sub}=80K$, $q_{s}$ is as follows $q_{s}=2.02{\times}10^{5}{\Delta}T_{set}^{0.05}:{\Delta}T_{set}\le500K.$ And the numerical analysis of unsteady heat conduction during the quenching process was made and the cooling curves were calculated by TDMA method.

  • Effects of subcooling on pool boiling heat transfer in vertical annuli with closed bottoms have been investigated experimentally. For the test, a tube of 19.1mm diameter and the water at atmospheric pressure have been used. Three annular gaps of 7.05, 18.15, and 28.20 have been tested in the subcooled water and results of the annuli are compared with the data of a single unrestricted tube. The increase in pool subcooling results in much change in heat transfer coefficients. At highly subcooled regions, heat transfer coefficients for the annuli are much larger than those of a single tube. As the heat flux increases and subcooling decrease, a deterioration of heat transfer coefficients is observed at the annulus of 7.05mm gap. Single-phase natural convection and liquid agitation are the governing mechanisms for the single tube while liquid agitation and bubble coalescence are the major factors at the bottom closed annuli.

  • Experiments were conducted to evaluate pool boiling heat transfer performance between plain and micro finned surfaces with FC-72, which is chemically and electrically stable. Three kinds of micro fins with the dimension of $100{\mu}m\;{\times}\;10{\mu}m$, $150{\mu}m\;{\times}\;10{\mu}m$ and $200{\mu}m\;{\times}\;10{\mu}m$ (width $\times$ height) were fabricated on the surface of a silicon chip. The experiments were carried out on the liquid subcooling of 5, 10 and 15 K under the atmospheric condition. The micro finned surface with a larger fin width of $200{\mu}m$ provided a better pool boiling heat transfer performance. Also, the micro finned surfaces showed a sharp increase in heat flux with increasing wall superheat and a larger heat transfer enhancement compared to a plain surface.

  • To validate the accuracy of the boiling heat flux partitioning model, an experiment was performed to investigate how the wall heat flux is divided into the three heat transfer modes of evaporation, quenching, and single-phase convection during subcooled nucleate boiling on a vertical wall. For the experimental partitioning of the wall heat flux, the wall heat flux and liquid-vapor distributions were simultaneously obtained using synchronized infrared thermometry and the total reflection technique. Boiling experiments of water with subcooling of $10^{\circ}C$ were conducted under atmospheric pressure, and the results obtained at the wall superheat of $12^{\circ}C$ and average heat flux of $283kW/m^2$were analyzed. There was a large difference in the heat flux partitioning results between the experiment and correlation, and the bubble departure diameter and bubble influence factor, which account for a portion of the surrounding superheated liquid layer detached by the departure of a bubble, were found to be important fundamental boiling parameters.

  • In this study, an effort has been made to analyze the subcooled boiling heat transfer in a natural circulation vertical evaporator. To verify the analysis, a small-scale model was made and tested. The friction correlation by Ueda, void fraction and quality correlation by Saha and Zuber along with the superposition heat transfer model by Rohsenow yielded a satisfactory agreement with the model test data. The analysis was extended to simulate a 1 ton/day concentration system. Comparison with the test results of 1 ton/day prototype revealed that the data were overpredicted by 13%. The capacity of the prototype was 1.2 ton/day with COP of 5.77.
