LCCA-embedded Monte Carlo Approach for Modeling Pay Adjustment at the State DOTs (도로공사에서 생애주기비용을 사용한 지급조정모델 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The development of a Pay Adjustment (PA) procedure for implementing Performance-related Specifications (PRS) is known to be a difficult task faced by most State Highway Agencies (SHAs) due to the difficulty in such areas as selecting pay factor items, modeling the relationship between stochastic variability of pay factor items and pavement performance, and determining an overall lot pay adjustment. This led to the need for an effective way of developing a scientific pay adjustment procedure by incorporating Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) embedded Monte Carlo approach. In this work, we propose a prototype system to determine a PA specifically using the data in the pavement management information systems at Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) as an exemplary to other SHAs. It is believed that the PRS methodology demonstrated in this study can be used in real projects by incorporating the more accurate and reliable performance prediction models and LCC model.

A Study on Paving Technique using Polymer Epoxy Resin Materials (고분자 에폭시 수지혼합물을 이용한 포장기술 연구)

  • This study was conducted to develop a thin paving technique using polymer epoxy resin materials which is considered as a durable pavement materials. The mechanical performance characteristics of the polymer epoxy resin materials were also evaluated to confirm the validity as a pavement materials. To estimate the performance properties of the materials, bending tests and bonding tests were performed using freeze-thaw and ultra-violet rays to accelerate the aging of materials. In addition, HYUNStay, a commercial structural analysis program for cable-stayed bridges, was used to compare the effect of paving materials between the polymer epoxy resin materials and the conventional ones on the reduction of cable tension and on the stability of the main tower. According to the test results, it is noted that the thin paving technique using polymer epoxy resin materials can improve the performance and durability of pavement compared to the conventional one.

  • Traffic volume increases according to highway expansion and industrial development which causes repetitive defect and durability degradation on pavement. The research of quality assurance system used abroad has introduced Korea. Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) has developed a Quality Performance Index (QPI) that quantitatively assesses the level of quality of the final product, and practical applications. Assessment factor on concrete pavement consisted of pavement thickness, compressive strength, IRI and spacing factor. Assessment factor on concrete pavement is determined by empirical evaluation factor from abroad. In this study, analysis of evaluation factors of concrete pavement by using pavement life prediction simulation and measured data were evaluated with consideration of feasibility of the assessment factor. Pavement life, performance and durability are affected by pavement thickness, compressive strength, IRI and spacing factor in assessment factor on concrete pavement, QPI.

Evaluation of Road Safety Audit on Existing Freeway by Empirical Bayes Method (경험적 베이즈 방법에 의한 공용중인 고속도로 교통안전진단사업의 효과평가)

  • Road safety audit is the preventive enhancement strategy for safety. : it gets rid of beforehand the potential factor of a traffic accident in the stage of road planning and design and it evaluates the appropriation for road geometric structure or safety facility to prevent traffic accident in the stage of operation after the construction. Since this strategy is introduced to our country in the early 2000s, various projects have been processed and it was legislated recently. And now, the evaluation of past project for its continuation is needed. Therefore, in this study the evaluation of road safety audit on existing freeway is performed. The spatial extent of this study is Yong-dong line on which the safety treatment was executed in 2005 and 2006. And, the temporal range of this study is each 2-year of before and after from 2005 and 2006. The empirical bayes method of observational evaluation studies is applied to analyze. As a result, there is an effect of improvement on most of treated sections. But there is ineffective or negligible on some sections. Compared with the detail of treatment on each section, the effect of multiple or various treatments is good for that section. On the other hand, the section on which effect doesn't appear is the result of single or unimportant treatments. Throughout these results, the concrete analysis can be performed and the countermeasures designed for the section on which effect doesn't appear. Also it is used as reference to the future plan and direction of road safety audit on existing freeway.

Initial Performance Evaluation of Fine-size Exposed Aggregate PCC Pavement by Experimental Construction (시험시공을 통한 소입경 골재노출 콘크리트포장의 초기 공용성 평가)

  • Surface of fine-size exposed aggregate Portland cement concrete pavements is consists of exposed coarse aggregate by removing upper 2~3mm mortar of concrete slab. Fine-size exposed aggregate PCC pavements have advantages of maintaining low-noise and adequate skid-resistance level during the performance period. In order to provide the successful exposed concrete aggregate pavement, uniform distribution of the coarse aggregate on pavement surface through adequate the mix design and exposing method. In this study, evaluated initial performance of fine-size exposed aggregate PCC pavement by experimental construction. And it was known that fine-size exposed aggregate concrete pavement which can reduce the noise and maintain the adequate level of skid resistance and strength.

Application of Pay Adjustment Regulation for Highway Flexible Pavements (도로 포장의 초기상태에 따른 공사비 차등지급규정의 시험적용)

  • Recently, pay adjustment regulation (PAR) has been developed to induce better performing road pavements around the country. This regulation was successfully applied during rehabilitation of highway flexible pavements for the first time, and their results are the focus of this paper. For highway pavements, a lot has been defined by typical amount of works a day. This lot was further divided into several sublots depending on field conditions. According to AASHTO Quality Assurance Guide Specification, pay factors for each lot were statistically determined with field measurements of five performance indicators. And composite pay factors were calculated by accounting for the impact of individual performance indicators on a long-term performance of pavement. In 2008, the PAR was tested with asphalt overlays conducted at all six local headquarters of Korea Expressway Corporation. Also, concerns raised during implementation are discussed in this paper. Limited data used in this study showed that if all performance indicators fall within the construction limits with less variances final construction costs may increase by 50%, whereas 10% reduction in construction costs could be necessary if key performance indicators such as density do not meet the construction quality requirements.

부식이 강트러스 철도교의 응력특성에 미치는 영향

  • 현재 우리나라에서 공용중인 강철도교의 50% 이상이 공용기간 50년 이상 경과된 교량으로 구성되어 있는데, 이와 같이 공용기간이 오래된 강교량의 내구성에 영향을 미치는 주된 열화손상으로 피로와 부식이 보고되고 있다. 이 가운데 부식열화현상에 관한 조사에 의하면 부식손상의 대부분은 국부적인 것으로 분류할 수 있으나 부식면적이 대상부재의 25%를 넘는 경우도 부재의 특성에 따라서는 l∼6%에 이르는 것으로 보고되고 있다. 그러나 부식으로 인한 단면감소에 따른 응력 발생 특성에 대한 연구나 실교량에서의 각 부재별 부식손상 정도에 따른 실측자료의 축적이 미흡한 실정이어서 유지관리에서의 부식에 대한 정량적인 평가가 체계적으로 이루어지고 있지 않다.(중략)

Right Turn Blocking Time By Pedestrian Volume at Signalized Intersection Crosswalks (횡단보도의 보행자수에 따른 우회전 불가능한 보행자 횡단시간비율의 분석 (우회전.직진 공용차로를 대상으로))

  • 신호교차로에서 맨 우측차로의 대부분이 우회전 공용차로로 사용되는데 도로용량편람에서 우회전이 불가능한 보행자 횡단시간 비율$(f_c)$은 공용차로의 용량을 결정하는 우회전보정계수$(f_{RT})$의 산정시 중요한 요소가 된다. 그러나 이에 대한 국내의 연구는 미미하여 연구의 필요성이 있다고 생각된다. 본 연구는 유입부의 직진신호시간을 위주로 교차방향 횡단보도 내의 보행자수와 우회전차량의 통과여부를 촬영하여 분석하는 방법으로 진행되었으며, 우회전 차량이 교차도로의 보행자 횡단시간에 보행자와의 상충으로 우회전하지 못하는 시간 비율을 산정함에 있어서 횡단보도의 보행자수에 따라 우회전 차량의 통과율을 구하고 이로부터 횡단보도 보행신호시간동안에 우회전이 불가능한 시간비율을 산정했다. 연구결과는 우회전이 불가능한 시간비율이 시간당 보행자수(양방향)가 500인/시~1,500인/시로 변할 때 0.78에서 0.94사이의 값을 가지며 한국도로용량편람에서 제시한 값 0.3에서 0.9보다는 대체로 큰 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 한국용량편람에서 얻은 우회전차로의 용량은 과대 평가되는 경향이 있다.

Evaluation of Endurance for Roadway Sealant (도로용 줄눈재의 내구성 평가)

  • Joints on concrete road prevent failure and crack securing the moderate space when concrete slab expands and contracts as a function of varying temperature throughout all seasons. Filling joint sealants in joints can prevent the interruption of slab movement and failure due to the infiltration of alien substances, and also can prevent crack caused by freezing and thawing and Dowel bar corrosion resulted from water - rainfall and snowfall infiltration through the inside the pavement. They lead to the improvement of the commonality of road. This paper evaluates physical strength, weatherability and deicer resistance of a two-year aged sample from joint on concrete road and its virgin sample. It was found that there are significant differences in aspects of weatherability and adhesive force between the tested sample and silicon materials.

  • Recently, many laundry home appliances have been released with Internet of Things (IoT) functions, but there are few quality evaluation tests for IoT functions. In particular, since IoT test items are not prepared for laundry home appliances applied with IoT functions, it is difficult to find the cause even if defects occur, and test institutions are limited in selecting test items related to IoT and conducting proper performance tests. In this paper, we design a test item framework that separates IoT test items into commonality and variability to identify product defects and causes for laundry home appliances with IoT features among products in the field of home appliances. Through the proposed research, manufacturers and test institutions can test the proper performance of laundry products with IoT functions, which can improve the completeness of the products and ensure reliability.
