  • This aim of this study is to assess the association of between glucose level and periodontal diseases in Korea adults. The data for analysis were obtained from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009. A total of 7,062 subjects who aged 19 years and above, underwent a medical and dental checkups. The prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes group was 27%, and the prevalence of impaired fasting glucose(IFG) group was 41.2%, diabetes group was 43.6% with periodontitis. IFG and diabetes had significantly higher prevalence of periodotontits compared to those having normal after adjusting confounding variables; the odds ratios were 1.35 (95% confidence interval: 1.17 to 1.55) and 1.27 (95% confidence interval: 1.02 to 1.58), respectively. This study has suggested that diabetes increases the risk of periodontal disease. Proactive, preventative dental and diabetes self care, as well as regular dental and diabetes assessment, are important management strategies for impaied fasting glucose and periodotnal health.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the anthropometry, blood pressure, blood lipid levels, and nutrient intakes in three groups: a group with an impaired fasting blood glucose (IFG) condition (62 males and 30 females); a group with normal blood glucose (73 males and 50 females); and a group with diabetes mellitus (DM) (79 males and 49 females). In male subjects, body mass index (BMI) and obesity index values were significantly higher in the IFG group than in normal and DM groups, but waist/hip ratio (WHR), systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure were not significantly different from those of the DM group. In female subjects, there was no difference in body weight, BMI, obesity index and WHR values between the IFG and the DM groups. The prevalence of obesity in the IFG group (males 43.6%, females 76.7%) was the highest among the three groups. The percentage of high SBP (40.0%) and high DBP (52.0%) in male subjects of the IFG group was significantly greater than in the DM group or the normal group. In the male subjects, the serum triglyceride concentration was significantly higher in the DM group than in the normal and IFG groups. There was no difference in various nutrient intakes(energy, carbohydrate, protein, fat, calcium, iron, vitamin A and cholesterol) among the three groups. In male subjects, the percentage of energy intake from alcohol was higher in the IFG group (7.0%) than that of the normal (4.5%) and the DM (5.6%) groups. The fasting blood glucose level had a positive correlation with WHR, TG, the athrogenic index and LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol. This study suggested that the IFG group had a higher obesity index, BMI, blood pressure and serum lipid levels (TG, cholesterol) than the normal or the DM group; furthermore, the IFG group had higher levels of alcohol intake and habits of taking unbalanced diets. Therefore, guidelines for IFG group should emphasize weight control, diet therapy, physical activities and regular balanced diets, in order to prevent diabetes in this group.

  • This study examined the relationships among impaired fasting glucose (IFG), diabetes and periodontal disease. The data from 10,856 adults (aged over 19 years) was derived from the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted in 2010 and 2012. Adjusting the related confounders, multiple logistic regression analysis showed that periodontitis were related to gender, age, education level, smoking and diabetic status (p<0.001). These findings suggest that abnormal fasting glucose, which is a predisposing factor for diabetes mellitus, does not appear to be a risk indicator for periodontal disease. On the other hand, if patients do not take steps to prevent or delay diabetes, prediabetes is likely to develop into type 2 diabetes within 10 years. Therefore, patients with prediabetes need to undergo continuous examinations and management of periodontal disease.

  • This study estimated the re!ation between psychological stress and stress hormones, nut tritional status of patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus(NIDDM). Psychol logical stress such as depr'ession and anxiety in 34 diabetics was analyzedin relation to nutrient intake, blood components such as fasting blood sugar(FBS), hemoglobin AIC, stress hormones a and amino acids. The IeveIs of depression and anxiety were measured by The center for epi idemiological studies-depc$pm$111.49pg/ml for total catecholamine ( (norepmephrine and epinephrine) and 233.95 $pm$73.99pg/ml for norepinephrine, 94.03$pm$75. 9 97pg/ml for epinephrine, 13.lS$pm$5.55pl/dl for cortisol and 171.50$pm$62.50pg/ml for gul c cagon respectlveIy. The leveIs of stress hormones in diabetics such as total catecholamine, norepi mephrine cortisol and glucagon were significantly higher than those in normal control. The level of epmephrine was higher in diabetics but the diffierenee was not significant. The calorie m t take in diabetics was 1762$pm$292keal which is S1.4% lower than Korean recommended dietary a allowances(RDA). Calcium intake was slightly low but other nutrients intakeswere higher than R RDA. The value of fasting blood sugar(FBS), usual fasting blood sugar(usual FBS) which refteet a average FBS during 3 months and hemoglobin Al C in diabetics was 1S4.1S$pm$74.22mg/dl, 177.76$pm$42.77mg/dl and S.S4$pm$2.S2% respec디VeIy. The distribution of plasma amino acids in d diabetics was generally in the normal range. The leveI of anxiety in diabetics was positively correlated with norepinephrine, concentration and usual FBS. The levels of glucagon, usual FBS a and hemoglobin Aj C were pOSI디veIy correlated with the branched chaimamino acid(BCM : leucme, isoleucme and valine)

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of duck meats with turmeric powder on blood lipids in 10 female university students. Methods: The subjects received duck meat with 0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.4% turmeric powder and glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol in their serums after 30, 60, 90, 120, and 180 min were measured. Results: The average height, weight, and body mass index of subjects were $159.6{\pm}2.6cm$, $51.3{\pm}3.5kg$, and $20.1{\pm}1.0$, respectively. The fasting glucose, ${\gamma}-glutamyl$ transferase (GGT), glutamic pyruvic transferase (GPT), glutamic oxaloacetic transferase (GOT), c-reactive protein (CRP), and hemoglobin were within the normal range. The ${\Delta}-AUC$ (area under the curve) of postprandial glucose, TG did not change, but ${\Delta}-AUC$ of postprandial total cholesterol and LDL were significantly decreased, and HDL was increased by intake of the duck meat with turmeric powder. Conclusion: This study shows that duck meats with turmeric powder affected the postprandial blood lipid levels.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate tile effects of the Paecilomyces japonica on blood glucose in non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus volunteers. During the 3 months of the experimental period, freeze-dried powder of Paecilomyces japonica (2 g/meal) was given to the subjects right before each meal. Paecilomyces japonica caused a significant decrease of $27.5\%\;and\;35.5\%$ in fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels, respectively. There were significant reductions of $28.5\%\;and\;33.5\%$ in fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels of the male subjects, respectively Paecilomyces japonica also significantly decreased in fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels of $26.1\%\;and\;37.3\%$ in female patients after treatment. This study shows that Paecilomyces japonica supplementation significantly lowered the fasting and postprandial glucose levels in NIDDM patients. These effects presumably contribute to the hypoglycemic activity.

  • Purpose : This study investigated the clinical significance of AN in children and adolescents with obesity induced metabolic complications. Methods : Forty-nine patients who had obesity induced metabolic complications were participated in this cross-sectional study. Obesity induced metabolic complications are as follows: hypertension, dyslipidemia, impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)>3.16. Clinical characteristics, such as, age, percentage-weight-for-height (PWH), pubertal status, blood pressure (BP), fasting plasma insulin level, fasting and post-oral glucose tolerance test 2-hour glucose levels, liver function test, lipid profile, HOMA-IR were compared according to the presence of AN. Results : Sixty-five percent of patients had AN, 57.1% NASH, 57.1% dyslipidemia, 55.1% hypertension, 46.9% IFG, 24.5% HOMA-IR>3.16 and 16.2% IGT. The patients who were moderately to severely obese with AN had higher incidence of IGT and HOMA-IR>3.16. The patients with AN had significantly higher diastolic BP ($79.4{\pm}6.9$ vs $75.4{\pm}5.6mmHg$), fasting levels of plasma insulin ($10.6{\pm}6.0$ vs $6.2{\pm}5.4{\mu}IU/mL$), HOMA-IR index ($2.6{\pm}1.4$ vs $1.4{\pm}1.3$) and PWH ($42.4{\pm}13.0$ vs $34.3{\pm}1.8%$). The increasing tendency for the presence of AN was significantly related to the cumulative number of obesity induced metabolic complications. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that the presence of AN was significantly associated with fasting plasma insulin level, PWH and IFG. Conclusion : AN could be useful as a clinical surrogate of obesity induced metabolic complications.

  • The purpose for this study was to investigate the health status according to the age and BMI by interviewing male workers in their twenties and thirties in the Daegu Gyeongbuk region. The body measurement was assessed by height, weight, BMI, body circumference (waist, hip), waist-hip ratio and body fat mass. The health status has been analyzed and assessed as normal group, health concerned group and health suspected groups. Weight, percent ideal body weight (PIBW), BMI and body circumference (waist, hip) and waist-hip ratio was proven higher according to the order of obese group, overweight group and normal group. Waist-hip ratio was proved to be higher in the thirties group than the twenties. Body fat mass was higher in the obese, overweight and normal groups. In the concerns of health status, the ratio of health concerned group and health suspected group increased according to the increase of BMI. Blood pressure (SBP, DBP) was higher in the obese group than in the normal group and overweight groups, and blood glucose was higher in the thirties than in the twenties. SGOT, SGPT, ${\gamma}-GTP$ has been proven higher in the obese group than in the normal group and overweight group, ${\gamma}-GTP$ was higher in the thirties than in the twenties. Investigating the correlation of the anthropometric characteristics and biochemical characteristics, the heavy weight resulted in heavier BMI, PIBW, body circumference (waist, hip), waist-hip ratio and higher body fat mass. Blood pressure (SBP, DBP), total cholesterol, blood glucose, SGOT, SGPT and ${\gamma}-GTP$ all became higher according to these influences. In conclusion, male workers have to recognize that health status becomes worse and possibilities of chronic disease prevalence rate increases according to aging and the increase of BMI. Accordingly, it is necessary to make an effort to prevent chronic diseases.
